Book Critical Role of Animal Science Research in Food Security and Sustainability

Download or read book Critical Role of Animal Science Research in Food Security and Sustainability written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2015-03-31 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By 2050 the world's population is projected to grow by one-third, reaching between 9 and 10 billion. With globalization and expected growth in global affluence, a substantial increase in per capita meat, dairy, and fish consumption is also anticipated. The demand for calories from animal products will nearly double, highlighting the critical importance of the world's animal agriculture system. Meeting the nutritional needs of this population and its demand for animal products will require a significant investment of resources as well as policy changes that are supportive of agricultural production. Ensuring sustainable agricultural growth will be essential to addressing this global challenge to food security. Critical Role of Animal Science Research in Food Security and Sustainability identifies areas of research and development, technology, and resource needs for research in the field of animal agriculture, both nationally and internationally. This report assesses the global demand for products of animal origin in 2050 within the framework of ensuring global food security; evaluates how climate change and natural resource constraints may impact the ability to meet future global demand for animal products in sustainable production systems; and identifies factors that may impact the ability of the United States to meet demand for animal products, including the need for trained human capital, product safety and quality, and effective communication and adoption of new knowledge, information, and technologies. The agricultural sector worldwide faces numerous daunting challenges that will require innovations, new technologies, and new ways of approaching agriculture if the food, feed, and fiber needs of the global population are to be met. The recommendations of Critical Role of Animal Science Research in Food Security and Sustainability will inform a new roadmap for animal science research to meet the challenges of sustainable animal production in the 21st century.

Book Management of Animal Waste

Download or read book Management of Animal Waste written by Amer El-Ahraf and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1996-03-14 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Animal agriculture is a major industry in the United States and around the world. Like all major industries, animal operations generate a significant amount of waste by-products, by-products which represent serious potential environmental pollutants. This work is an attempt to help those concerned with animal waste management—agricultural economists and policy-makers, environmental and public health officers, farmers, and so on—deal with this critical issue by addressing the problems generated by animal waste within a comprehensive management approach. As animal production worldwide has taken on the characteristics of an industrial operation, the implications of large quantities of waste—disposal and/or refuse—must be analyzed in environmental, economic, and public health terms. This work provides such an analysis.

Book An Analysis of Animal Waste Management Legislation with Implication for Planning Educational Programs

Download or read book An Analysis of Animal Waste Management Legislation with Implication for Planning Educational Programs written by R. O. Encarnacao and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined the legislation of thirty-five states and synthesized the guidelines for manure disposal. The focus of the study was to aggregate the common rules and regulations in the legislation of the thirty-five states, to develop guidelines which will assist educators, and to develop a decision taxonomy which will improve the selection of animal wastes mangement practices. This research was conducted as a field study and was based on two sources of information, a literature review and a requesting letter. The information from thirty-five responding states was practically analyzed. The guidelines regarding waste management of each state were compiled into resumes which include the same information for each state. The information from the resumes was organized into chart form for easier access. The data present in both the chart and the resumes were practically analized according to the number of required guidelines for each state, the number of states which require each guideline, and a comparison by state. A decision taxonomy of animal waste management was developed to outline techniques which are cost effective and environmentally sound. No practical relationships appeared when the states' legislations were compared based on demographic similarities and differences. The only slight relationship was found when comparing milk producing states. Regulated areas vary within the large milk producing states. There is also often a discrepancy between the regulations of small milk producing states and large milk producers. In some areas the two groups were in agreement, and in some areas, they disagreed. Based on a practical analysis, there was no trend of evidence which would allow for generalization of practices among the states even when the states are demographically similar. The data were organized into four easy-to-follow segments to provide educational literature which is convenient to use.
