This book is the result of three years of iterative research which explores the ways in which technology, community, and urban design can work together to create more sustainable and productive cities. The book offers insights into how enabling technologies and citizen empowerment are leading to new economic models and a collaborative culture. Through an in-depth analysis of the city of Rome, the research demonstrates how a focus on community building and new urban models can lead to more sustainable, resilient, and productive cities. The outcome of the research is a hyper-local tool that enables bottom-up initiatives to respond to specific needs and help develop new economies. This approach, combined with top-down initiatives from administrations could be useful for further creation of proposals that precisely address community needs. Findings of the research will be useful for policymakers, urban planners, makers, designers, and citizens who want to design and advocate for sustainable urban development models and thriving neighborhoods. With its practical insights and real-world examples, this book offers a roadmap for building more resilient and sustainable cities in the 21st century.

Download or read book Out of Water Design Solutions for Arid Regions written by Liat Margolis and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2014-10-27 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water scarcity is becoming increasingly familiar to us. Although access to water resources is an issue of global concern, arid climates are where necessity begets inventions that may serve as examples for action or prevention across a multitude of climate zones and geographies. In facing the prevalence of water scarcity across the globe, due to a mix of climatological and man-made factors, the question we must ask ourselves today is Water for What? Which approaches can landscape, urban and architectural designers take in order to apply their specific professional skills and means? What potential do available technologies and materials offer, and what methods and tools can be derived from social engagement? Based on five years of research, the preparation of and feedback on a traveling exhibition, as well as a major conference, the results of the Out of Water project are laid out here in a series of case studies and essays by international experts, including analytical drawings of both projected and implemented solutions.

Book Contested Architectural Pasts and Futures of a Regional City Geelong Australia

Download or read book Contested Architectural Pasts and Futures of a Regional City Geelong Australia written by Mirjana Lozanovska and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2024-10-03 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays highlights current debates for cities undergoing urban renewal, focussing on regional cities as places that lead change. Like many regional cities, Geelong is grappling with the legacy of its industrial architectural heritage and identity. This in-depth study of the city of Geelong examines theories and realities - from the speculative to the mundane – critical to change pre-empted by deindustrialisation. While this book argues that architecture and the built environment are key to urban renewal, an intersectional perspective on Geelong as a place raises contested pasts and territories. This brings attention to the dispossession of First Nations people by British colonisers, as well as the exploitation of immigrant communities in industrial production. Informed by positions on design futures, decolonising and cultural urbanisms, adaptive re-use and the post-industrial city, the chapters in this book expand an interdisciplinary field relevant to scholars and practitioners in heritage and conservation, urban design, community engagement and place-making more generally.

Book Anticipating Future Innovation Pathways Through Large Data Analysis

Download or read book Anticipating Future Innovation Pathways Through Large Data Analysis written by Tugrul U. Daim and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-25 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to identify promising future developmental opportunities and applications for Tech Mining. Specifically, the enclosed contributions will pursue three converging themes: The increasing availability of electronic text data resources relating to Science, Technology and Innovation (ST&I). The multiple methods that are able to treat this data effectively and incorporate means to tap into human expertise and interests. Translating those analyses to provide useful intelligence on likely future developments of particular emerging S&T targets. Tech Mining can be defined as text analyses of ST&I information resources to generate Competitive Technical Intelligence (CTI). It combines bibliometrics and advanced text analytic, drawing on specialized knowledge pertaining to ST&I. Tech Mining may also be viewed as a special form of “Big Data” analytics because it searches on a target emerging technology (or key organization) of interest in global databases. One then downloads, typically, thousands of field-structured text records (usually abstracts), and analyses those for useful CTI. Forecasting Innovation Pathways (FIP) is a methodology drawing on Tech Mining plus additional steps to elicit stakeholder and expert knowledge to link recent ST&I activity to likely future development. A decade ago, we demeaned Management of Technology (MOT) as somewhat self-satisfied and ignorant. Most technology managers relied overwhelmingly on casual human judgment, largely oblivious of the potential of empirical analyses to inform R&D management and science policy. CTI, Tech Mining, and FIP are changing that. The accumulation of Tech Mining research over the past decade offers a rich resource of means to get at emerging technology developments and organizational networks to date. Efforts to bridge from those recent histories of development to project likely FIP, however, prove considerably harder. One focus of this volume is to extend the repertoire of information resources; that will enrich FIP. Featuring cases of novel approaches and applications of Tech Mining and FIP, this volume will present frontier advances in ST&I text analytics that will be of interest to students, researchers, practitioners, scholars and policy makers in the fields of R&D planning, technology management, science policy and innovation strategy.
