Book First Principles of the Reformation

Download or read book First Principles of the Reformation written by Martin Luther and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-06-10 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Martin Luther was a German friar, priest and professor of theology who was a seminal figure in the Protestant Reformation. Luther taught that salvation and subsequently eternity in heaven is not earned by good deeds but is received only as a free gift of God's grace through faith in Jesus Christ as redeemer from sin and subsequently eternity in hell. His theology challenged the authority and office of the Pope by teaching that the Bible is the only source of divinely revealed knowledge from God and opposed sacerdotalism by considering all baptized Christians to be a holy priesthood. Those who identify with these, and all of Luther's wider teachings, are called Lutherans even though Luther insisted on Christian as the only acceptable name for individuals who professed Christ. Today, Lutheranism constitutes a major branch of Protestantism and overall Christianity with some 80 million adherents.

Book First Principles of the Reformation 95 Theses and Other Works

Download or read book First Principles of the Reformation 95 Theses and Other Works written by Martin Luther and published by Digireads.com Publishing. This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1517, Martin Luther challenged the Catholic Church, and ultimately altered the course of European history, when he nailed his "95 Theses on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences" on the door of Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany. At the time, Renaissance humanists were beginning to oppose the reign of the Church and the wealth it accrued from taxes and the sale of Indulgences to the people. A monk and a scholar, Luther intended to promote independent thinking with the translation of the Bible into the vernacular. He wanted people to read the words and understand God in terms of their own experience. Unsurprisingly, he was ordered by the pope to print a retraction, which he refused; he was ultimately excommunicated, and his action prompted the Protestant Reformation. This edition contains Martin Luther's "95 Theses," as well as the three other primary works of Martin Luther: "To the Christian Nobility of the German Nation Respecting the Reformation of the Christian Estate," "Concerning Christian Liberty," and "On the Babylonish Captivity of the Church."

Book excerpt: Can Christians and churches be both catholic and Reformed? In this volume, two accomplished young theologians argue that to be Reformed means to go deeper into true catholicity rather than away from it. Their manifesto for a catholic and Reformed approach to dogmatics seeks theological renewal through retrieval of the rich resources of the historic Christian tradition. The book provides a survey of recent approaches toward theological retrieval and offers a renewed exploration of the doctrine of sola scriptura. It includes a substantive afterword by J. Todd Billings.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reformation Principles: Stated and Applied The Roman moralist, Terrence, said: I am a man, and nothing that concerns humanity is alien to my breast. The interests of the American people are hanging in the balance. The crisis in the conflict between the forces of good and evil in this land has come. And the parting sentiment of Horace Mann should ring out along the line: I beseech you to treasure up in your hearts these my parting words: Be ashamed to die until you have won some victory for humanity. Not long before the surrender of Gen. Lee at Appomatox, Gen. Sheridan wrote his chief, Gen. Grant, If things are pushed we can soon run down the enemy. Gen. Grant re plied, with characteristic brevity, Push things, then. The National Reform Association proposes to push things until this nation is in allegiance with the Lord Jesus Christ. The movement is to be made all along the line. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
