Download or read book Commercial Insects written by Professor Omkar and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2023-12-22 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite being the biggest group of organisms inhabiting Earth in both diversity and sheer numbers, insects are barely commercialized. Most of the standard textbooks of applied entomology talk about insect pest management, and when it comes to commercial aspects of insects, only apiculture, sericulture, and lac culture are talked about. This book will help bring other commercial uses of insects and their economic potential to the fore. This will generate interest in further research on the commercial potential of insects, thereby harnessing a much-found resource. The book has the following salient features: 1. Encompasses all major aspects of beneficial and commercial insects. 2. Deals with edible insects and mass culture of natural enemies and beneficial insects. 3. Emphasis on the mass cultivation of beneficial insects for obtaining yields. 4. Discusses stingless bees and their products. 5. Helps to solve the problem of food scarcity and improve food security.

Download or read book The Mulberry Genome written by Belaghihalli N. Gnanesh and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-06-16 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first comprehensive compilation of current knowledge on mulberry (Morus L.) covering botany, cytogenetics, biodiversity, genetics and breeding, tissue culture and genetic transformation, biotic and abiotic stresses, molecular mapping, QTL identification, whole genome sequencing and elucidation on functional genomics. As mulberry is one of the most economically important trees in Asian countries, it has attracted the attention of both academicians as well as industrialists. Being highly heterozygous due to long juvenile life coupled cross pollination among species, the genetics of this important crop species is yet to be unravelled. Nonetheless, the recent success of sequencing the genomes of haploid and diploid domesticated species has ushered in an era of intense molecular and genetic research to understand this crop well for its better utilization for mankind. In this book, efforts have been made to bring together key information on origin and distribution, taxonomy, morphological features, economic importance, abiotic stress responses, disease and pest resilience, current breeding strategies and their constraints, progress and prospects of gene mapping, elucidation of genes controlling metabolic and physiological pathways, and their utilization in crop improvement which are elaborated in about 250 pages over 13 chapters authored by globally leading experts on the species presented. This book is useful to the sericulture community in the world in general and students, teachers, and scientists in the academia for forage and fruit production, genetics, breeding, pathology, entomology, physiology, molecular genetics, in vitro culture and genetic engineering, and structural and functional genomics. This book is also useful to seed and biofuel industries.

Download or read book Silkworm Breeding Made Easy written by Autar Misri and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2018-04-29 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silk is the queen of textiles. The Asian region supplies silk to the world market. China accounts for the bulk of silk exports to the world. Japan realized the importance of silkworm breeding and contributed a lot to the development of sericulture. However, till recently this development of technology was not given out and was kept as a secret. The language also acted as a barrier in this respect. The breeding techniques developed by Japanese were for temperate regions. At present due to electronic revolution the silk producing countries of the Asian region are experiencing changes in their production patterns. Advanced sericulture countries like Japan and Korea are showing some decline in their silk output levels. Other developing countries like India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka etc. that belong to the tropical belt have realized the potential benefits, such as alleviating rural poverty through employment and income generating activities. The main aim of writing this book is to make basic techniques of silkworm breeding more comprehensive it includes fundamental principles which are most common and directly applicable to breeders. The basic techniques are emphasized to stress practical applications in order to achieve breeding aims under various environmental conditions. The data given in the text is mostly for bivoltine breeds. This publication, therefore, intends to serve as a hint book for researchers who are planning to organize or initiate a breeding plan in silkworm breeding. The purpose of silkworm breeding is to improve economic characters. The breeding and popularization of good varieties of silkworms not only enhances farmer's income, but also improves cocoon qualities and reeling process. The silkworm cocoon and raw silk production is primarily based on successful breeding of good silkworm varieties. The improvement of silkworm varieties for higher cocoon yields is an efficient way to achieve good quality raw silk. The breeders have to aim at improving the overall productivity of silk per unit area of mulberry plantation. Besides this, the breeders in India shall have to address themselves about the real problems prevailing in India viz., high temperature in tropics, poor quality mulberry leaves, and heavy pathogen load in the micro environment. So far, the critical information in developing superior silkworm breeds of commercial interest has remained confined to Seri culturally advanced countries. As such there is a need to assist developing silk producing countries to improve breeding capabilities, and breeding techniques. The information and literature on silkworm breeding is not very much available, hence an attempt has been made to compile and to share the views. The book gives a general introduction to breeding with special reference to silkworm breeding. I hope the information contained will be useful to the silkworm breeders. The book is expected to fill the void being felt in the field of sericulture and especially in silkworm breading to evolve new breeds. Further the sericulture being introduced in graduate and post graduate levels in different states of the country the book is expected to be of immense help to the student's community in particular and the associated scientific fraternity in general.
