Book Principles of Statistical Radiophysics 4

Download or read book Principles of Statistical Radiophysics 4 written by Sergei M. Rytov and published by Springer. This book was released on 1989-08-10 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Principles of Statistical Radiophysics is concerned with the theory of random func tions (processes and fields) treated in close association with a number of applications in physics. Primarily, the book deals with radiophysics in its broadest sense, i.e., l viewed as a general theory of oscillations and waves of any physical nature • This translation is based on the second (two-volume) Russian edition. It appears in four volumes: 1. Elements of Random Process Theory 2. Correlation Theory of Random Processes 3. Elements of Random Fields 4. Wave Propagation Through Random Media. The four volumes are, naturally, to a large extent conceptually interconnected (being linked, for instance, by cross-references); yet for the advanced reader each of them might be of interest on its own. This motivated the division of the Principles into four separate volumes. The text is designed for graduate and postgraduate students majoring in radio physics, radio engineering, or other branches of physics and technology dealing with oscillations and waves (e.g., acoustics and optics). As a rule, early in their career these students face problems involving the use of random functions. The book pro vides a sound basis from which to understand and solve problems at this level. In addition, it paves the way for a more profound study of the mathematical theory, should it be necessary2. The reader is assumed to be familiar with probability theory.

Book excerpt: This volume presents five review articles covering a broad range of topics which will be of interest to many scientists concerned with optics and related subjects. The first article deals with nonlinear optical properties of chalcogenide glasses. These materials have many interesting structural properties, some of which are useful for applications to integrated active optical devices. This article presents a review of experimental measurements of nonlinear absorption coefficients and nonlinear refractive indices of such materials. A review of various models formulated to explain their properties is also included. The next article reviews the research on super-resolution, i.e. the possibility of overcoming the classical diffraction limit of about half a wavelength. The problem is shown to be essentially equivalent to extrapolating the spatial frequency spectrum of the object beyond the spectral band of the optical system.

Book Seismic Wave Propagation and Scattering in the Heterogenous Earth

Download or read book Seismic Wave Propagation and Scattering in the Heterogenous Earth written by Haruo Sato and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-12-17 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seismic waves – generated both by natural earthquakes and by man-made sources – have produced an enormous amount of information about the Earth's interior. In classical seismology, the Earth is modeled as a sequence of uniform horizontal layers (or sperical shells) having different elastic properties and one determines these properties from travel times and dispersion of seismic waves. The Earth, however, is not made of horizontally uniform layers, and classic seismic methods can take large-scale inhomogeneities into account. Smaller-scale irregularities, on the other hand, require other methods. Observations of continuous wave trains that follow classic direct S waves, known as coda waves, have shown that there are heterogeneities of random size scattered randomly throughout the layers of the classic seismic model. This book focuses on recent developments in the area of seismic wave propagation and scattering through the randomly heterogeneous structure of the Earth, with emphasis on the lithosphere. The presentation combines information from many sources to present a coherent introduction to the theory of scattering in acoustic and elastic materials and includes analyses of observations using the theoretical methods developed.

Book Advances in Geophysics

    Book Details:
  • Author : Haruo Sato
  • Publisher : Academic Press
  • Release : 2009-02-26

  • Pages : 497 pages

Download or read book Advances in Geophysics written by Haruo Sato and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2009-02-26 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seismic waves generated by earthquakes have been interpreted to provide us information about the Earth's structure across a variety of scales. For short periods of less than 1 second, the envelope of seismograms changes significantly with increased travel distance and coda waves are excited by scattering due to randomly distributed heterogeneities in the Earth. Deterministic structures such as horizontally uniform velocity layer models in traditional seismology cannot explain these phenomena. This book focuses on the Earth heterogeneity and scattering effects on seismic waves. Topics covered are recent developments in wave theory and observation including: coda wave analysis for mapping medium heterogeneity and monitoring temporal variation of physical properties, radiation of short-period seismic waves from an earthquake fault, weak localization of seismic waves, attenuation of seismic waves in randomly porous media, synthesis of seismic wave envelopes in short periods, and laboratory investigations of ultrasonic wave propagation in rock samples. - Understanding new methods for the analysis of short-period seismic waves to characterize the random heterogeneity of the Earth on many scales - Observations of seismic wave scattering - Discussion of techniques for mapping medium heterogeneity and for monitoring temporal change in medium characteristics - Up-to-date techniques for the synthesis of wave envelopes in random media

Book Classical Semi classical and Quantum Noise

Download or read book Classical Semi classical and Quantum Noise written by Leon Cohen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-12-21 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Middleton was a towering figure of 20th Century engineering and science and one of the founders of statistical communication theory. During the second World War, the young David Middleton, working with Van Fleck, devised the notion of the matched filter, which is the most basic method used for detecting signals in noise. Over the intervening six decades, the contributions of Middleton have become classics. This collection of essays by leading scientists, engineers and colleagues of David are in his honor and reflect the wide influence that he has had on many fields. Also included is the introduction by Middleton to his forthcoming book, which gives a wonderful view of the field of communication, its history and his own views on the field that he developed over the past 60 years. Focusing on classical noise modeling and applications, Classical, Semi-Classical and Quantum Noise includes coverage of statistical communication theory, non-stationary noise, molecular footprints, noise suppression, Quantum error correction, and other related topics.

Book Scattering And Diffraction In Physical Optics 2nd Edition

Download or read book Scattering And Diffraction In Physical Optics 2nd Edition written by Manuel Nieto Vesperinas and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2006-06-01 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive tutorial on propagation, diffraction and scattering problems from the basic principles of physical optics. Beginning with the fundamental differential and integral equations for wavefields, the text presents an exhaustive discussion on the extinction theorem as a non-local boundary condition; this has been extensively employed for the rigorous solution of scattering and diffraction problems. There is also an in-depth presentation of the topic of scattering from rough surfaces, in particular the phenomenon of enhanced backscattering, as well as a detailed development of the angular spectrum representation of fields leading to questions on non-diffraction beams. Of key interest in near field optical microscopy and nanooptics, the S-matrix theory based on the angular spectrum for propagating components and the recently discovered properties of the S-matrix for evanescent components of wavefields are considered. In addition, the book deals with the healing effect of phase conjugation on waves, and focuses on some applications concerning the relationship with time reversal.Readers will also find discussions on image recovery from partial information data (phase problems and super-resolution problems), as well as a chapter on the fundamentals of near field optical microscopy techniques, including the hot topic of propagation in negative index media.
