Book Training the Body

Download or read book Training the Body written by David Torevell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-05-12 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to examine the body in training in the context of religion, sport and wider physical culture, offering important insight into the performative, social, cultural and gendered aspects of somatic discipline and exercise. The book presents a series of fascinating thematic and case-study led chapters from around the world, examining topics including the martial discipline and symbolism of artistic gymnastics; religious interpretations of body vulnerability in the context of marathons; the religious language of corporeal training in sport and martial arts. Drawing on multi-disciplinary perspectives, from sport, religion, history and philosophy, the book explores the often contested and sometimes over-zealous application of training in both sport and religion and the ways in which this can cause harm to athletes or adherents. This is fascinating reading for any advanced student or researcher with an interest in the body, physical cultural studies, the ethics and philosophy of sport, the sociology of sport, religious studies, Asian studies or philosophy.

Book Off Balance

Download or read book Off Balance written by Dominique Moceanu and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012-06-12 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this searing and riveting New York Times bestseller, Olympic gold medalist Dominique Moceanu reveals the dark underbelly of Olympic gymnastics, the true price of success…and the shocking secret about her past and her family that she only learned years later. At fourteen years old, Dominique Moceanu was the youngest member of the 1996 US Women’s Olympic Gymnastics team, the first and only American women’s team to take gold at the Olympics. Her pixyish appearance and ferocious competitive drive quickly earned her the status of media darling. But behind the fame, the flawless floor routines, and the million-dollar smile, her life was a series of challenges and hardships. Off Balance vividly delineates each of the dominating characters who contributed to Moceanu’s rise to the top, from her stubborn father and long-suffering mother to her mercurial coach, Bela Karolyi. Here, Moceanu finally shares the haunting stories of competition, her years of hiding injuries and pain out of fear of retribution from her coaches, and how she hit rock bottom after a public battle with her parents. But medals, murder plots, drugs, and daring escapes aside (all of which figure into Moceanu’s incredible journey), the most unique aspect of her life is the family secret that Moceanu discovers, opening a new and unexpected chapter in her adult life. A mysterious letter from a stranger reveals that she has a second sister—born with a physical disability and given away at birth—who has nonetheless followed in Moceanu’s footsteps in an astonishing way. A multilayered memoir that transcends the world of sports, Off Balance will touch anyone who has ever dared to dream of a better life.

Book Principled Leadership

Download or read book Principled Leadership written by Kevin Dougherty and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2024-03-07 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among dozens of leadership theories, types, and styles, "principled leadership," is increasingly in demand as ethical crises plague more and more organizations and individuals. But despite strong consensus surrounding the need for principled leadership, there is little common understanding of it as an art and science. What exactly is principled leadership? How does it work? How does a leader practice it? What distinguishes it from other leadership types? What does it look like in action? How is principled leadership more than just individual principled behavior? This book answers these and more questions, introducing principled leadership theory and illustrating it through practical case studies. Principled leadership holds powerful, positive effects for leaders who practice its concepts.

Book The Islamic Challenge

Download or read book The Islamic Challenge written by Jytte Klausen and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2005-10-27 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The voices in this book belong to parliamentarians, city councillors, doctors and engineers, a few professors, lawyers and social workers, owners of small businesses, translators, and community activists. They are also all Muslims, who have decided to become engaged in political and civic organizations. And for that reason, they constantly have to explain themselves, mostly in order to say who they are not. They are not fundamentalists, not terrorists, and most do not support the introduction of Islamic religious law in Europe - especially not its application to Christians. This book is about who these people are, and what they want. This book is based on three hundred interviews with European Muslim leaders from six European countries: Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, Great Britain, France, and Germany. The question of Islam in Europe is not a matter of global war and peace but raises difficult questions about the positions of Christianity and Islam in public life, and about European identities. Europe's Muslim political leaders are not aiming to overthrow liberal democracy and to replace secular law with Islamic religious law. Those are the positions of a minority. There is not one Muslim position on how Islam should develop in Europe but many views, and most Muslims are rather looking for ways to build institutions that will allow European Muslims to practice their religion in a way that is compatible with social integration.

Book Exercise in the Female Life Cycle in Britain 1930 1970

Download or read book Exercise in the Female Life Cycle in Britain 1930 1970 written by Eilidh Macrae and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-09 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines how adolescence, menstruation and pregnancy were experienced or ‘managed’ by active women in Britain between 1930 and 1970, and how their athletic life-styles interacted with their working lives, marriage and motherhood. It explores the gendered barriers which have influenced women’s sporting experiences. Women’s lives have always been shaped by the socially and physically constructed life-cycle, and this is all the more apparent when we look at female exercise. Even self-proclaimed ‘sporty’ women have had to negotiate obstacles at various stages of their lives to try and maintain their athletic identity. So how did women overcome these obstacles to gain access to exercise in a time when the sportswoman was not an image society was wholly comfortable with? Oral history testimony and extensive archival research show how the physically and socially constructed female life-cycle shaped women’s experiences of exercise and sport throughout these decades.
