Book The Inspiration and Interpretation of Scripture

Download or read book The Inspiration and Interpretation of Scripture written by Michael Graves and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2014-02-15 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is true of Scripture as a result of being inspired? What should divine inspiration cause us to expect from it? The answers to these questions in the early church related not just to the nature of Scripture's truth claims but to the manner in which Scripture was to be interpreted. In this book Michael Graves delves into what Christians in the first five centuries believed about the inspiration of Scripture, identifying the ideas that early Christians considered to be logical implications of biblical inspiration. Many books presume to discuss how some current trend relates to the "traditional" view of biblical inspiration; this one actually describes in a detailed and nuanced way what the "traditional" view is and explores the differences between ancient and modern assumptions on the topic. Accessible and engaging, The Inspiration and Interpretation of Scripture presents a rich network of theological ideas about the Bible together with critical engagement with the biblical text.

Download or read book The Historical Jesus written by Etienne Nodet and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2011-11-03 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A very active member of the École Biblique et Archéologique Française de Jérusalem that has done so much to introduce historical criticism into the believer's reading of the Scriptures, Étienne Nodet proposes here a beautiful history book. Certainly, in putting forward to the general public an accessible synthesis of scholarly and dense works carried out successfully in these recent years, he spares the reader the ponderousness of a critical apparatus and consigns to Appendix I the citation of his principal ancient sources. He invites the reader to a fascinating effort of the intelligence and of the heart that constitutes the profession of a historian: documentation, appraisal of documents, examining witnesses, comparisons, inductions and deductions; even textual criticism is sometimes called upon: for example, he is one of those who postulates the existence of a "Western Text" of the New Testament, and draws interesting hypotheses from its comparison with the standard text of the critical editions. In a second appendix, not found in the original French work, he presents a new translation of Josephus' War of the Jews for hints of authentic non-Christian evidence about Jesus and John the Baptist. Beginning with the Gospel accounts of the infancy of Jesus, the author opens up for us the main features of the life of Jesus in a reading that oscillates between the questioning of the historical reference and the penetrating understanding of their verbal expression. Finally, there is the very suggestive sketch of the figure of James, "the brother of the Lord" and the head of the early Jerusalem church.

Book L criture dans la tradition

Download or read book L criture dans la tradition written by Jean Breck and published by Editions du Cerf. This book was released on 2016-11-25 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book The Text of Matthew in the Writings of Basil of Caesarea

Download or read book The Text of Matthew in the Writings of Basil of Caesarea written by Jean-François Racine and published by Brill Academic Publishers. This book was released on 2004 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The series seeks to contribute to the understanding of the variation and transmission of the New Testament by analyzing quotations of and allusions to passages of it in the work of Christian writers of Late Antiquity, many of which can be more precisely located both temporally and geographically than the earliest New Testament manuscripts. Racine (Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley) finds Basil (ca. 330-379) a valuable witness in that regard because he quotes abundantly and at length, apparently coping from a written text. A similar study has been conducted on his brother, Gregory of Nyssa (ca. 335-394), so the combination adds much to the knowledge of the New Testament text in use in Cappadocia during the fourth century. The study is slightly revised from his October 2000 Ph. D. dissertation for the University of St. Michael's College. Distributed by Aspen. Book Manichaeism and Its Legacy

Download or read book Manichaeism and Its Legacy written by John Kevin Coyle and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume reproduces nineteen chapters and articles published between 1991 through 2008, on Manichaeism, and its contacts with Augustine of Hippo, its most famous convert and also best-known adversary. The contents are divided into four parts: perceptions of Mani within the Roman Empire, select aspects of Manichaean thought, women in Manichaeism, and Manichaeism and Augustine. Though these chapters and articles reproduce their originals, adjustments have been made to include cross-referencing, newer editions, and the like, all with the aim of rendering them more accessible to a new readership among those who follow the fortunes of Mani s religion in the Roman Empire and/or the Manichaean aspects of Augustine of Hippo.
