In 1991, an eleven-year-old-girl was abducted in broad daylight. Eighteen years later, a policewoman at the University of California, Berkeley, confronted a deranged man accompanied by two young girls. During questioning the next day, the girls’ mother blurted, “I am Jaycee Lee Dugard.” Her companion was identified as Phillip Craig Garrido—a convicted drug user, rapist, and sexual predator. Book Crowning the Nice Girl

Download or read book Crowning the Nice Girl written by Christine R. Yano and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2006-06-30 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After World War II, Japanese Americans in Hawai‘i sought to carve a positive niche of public citizenship in the community. In 1953 members of the Honolulu Japanese Junior Chamber of Commerce and their wives created a beauty contest, the Cherry Blossom Festival (CBF) Queen Pageant, which quickly became an annual spectacle for the growing urban population of Honolulu. Crowning the Nice Girl analyzes the pageant through its decades of development to the present within multiple frameworks of gender, class, and race/ethnicity. Drawing on extensive archival research; interviews with CBF queens, contestants, and organizers; and participant observation in the Fiftieth Annual Festival as a volunteer, Christine Yano paints a complex portrait of not only a beauty pageant, but also a community. The study begins with the subject of beauty pageants in general and Asian American beauty pageants in particular, interrogating the issues they raise, embedding them within their histories, and examining them as part of a global culture that has taken its model from the Miss America contest.Yano follows the pageant throughout the decades into the 1990s, adding corresponding "herstories"—extensive narratives drawn from interviews with CBF queens. She concludes by framing issues of race, ethnicity, spectacle, and community within the intertwined themes of niceness and banality.

Book excerpt: In the years following World War II Americans in every city in the United States enjoyed bowling. Men and women bowled in separate leagues or together. In bowling's early days, pin boys risked the dangers of flying wood to set pins from afternoons through early mornings, often in seedy surroundings. When pinspotters replaced the pin boys, national advertising campaigns changed the sport's image. Huge bowling lanes welcomed people of all social levels. Bowling boomed. Hidden Agendas is set in the 1980's, a time when bowling's popularity was universal. The story focuses on a young New York man hired to participate in an Arizona bowling match with a $20 million dollar jackpot. Edward Vincent Karol has worked his way to the top of two professions. Smart enough to realize the people bankrolling his opponent might want him removed, he vanishes from his usual haunts. Yet, two dominant needs remain. One is regular practice, and the other, a way to get to Arizona unharmed. His challenges are complicated by his mother's incessant demand for a grandchild, and a meeting with a young woman whose physical and mental health verge on total disaster. He'd like to help her. Doing so would mean added tension throughout the most difficult month of his career.

Book excerpt: ESSE QUAM VIDERI Jonathan Charlesworth Winslow, known to all as Jaycee, is a mildly dyslexic, slightly overweight child of divorce locked in the grip of his troubled adolescence until he accidently meets Calyx Marie Townsend on the platform of Pennsylvania Station. Set in the late 1940s, the saga of their consequent relationship in a small Connecticut seaside town traces the vicissitudes of his emotional and intellectual growth as he struggles to conquer his limitations over the course of a year. Sent away to prep school, he is aided by his teachers and his Southern roommate, Stuart Longstreet, while at home he is taken under the wing of Jules LeBlanc, an elder and gruff mariner who becomes his seagoing mentor. Esse Quam Videri, the motto of his new school, means “To be rather than to seem to be.” Accordingly, this is a story of being and becoming, of love and hate, belief and nonbelief, bias and rectitude.

Book Postmodern War

Download or read book Postmodern War written by Chris Hables Gray and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-12 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Postmodern War poses an urgent challenge to the ways we conceptualize and actually wage war in our high technology age. Computerization and artificial intelligence have brought about a revolution in warfare spawning both increasingly powerful weapons and a rhetoric which disguises their apocalyptic potential in catch phrases like smart weapons and bloodless combat. Postmodern War examines: * contemporary practices of war, defining and critiquing trendy military doctrines hidden behind phrases like Infowar and Cyberwar * the roles of those who manipulate high technology, those who are manipulated by it, and those who are increasingly merging with it * the role of peace activists and socially responsible scientists in countering dangerous assumptions made by a postmodern military. Far from opposing technological change, however, Gray finds new hopes for peace in the twenty-first century. Provocative and far-reaching in its scope, the book argues that postmodern war has left us poised between the most dreadful and most utopian of alternatives: we may eradicate either the human race or war itself.
