Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Authorized Heritage" analyses the history of commemoration at heritage sites across western Canada. Using extensive research from predominantly government records, it argues that heritage narratives are almost always based on national messages that commonly reflect colonial perceptions of the past. Yet many of the places that commemorate Indigenous, fur trade, and settler histories are contested spaces, places such as Batoche, Seven Oaks, and Upper Fort Garry being the most obvious. At these heritage sites, Indigenous views of history confront the conventions of settler colonial pasts and represent the fluid cultural perspectives that should define the shifting ground of heritage space. Robert Coutts brings his many years of experience as a public historian to this detailed examination of heritage sites across the prairies. He shows how the process of commemoration often reflects social and cultural perspectives that privilege a conventional and conservative national narrative. He also examines how class, gender, and sexuality often remain apart from the heritage discourse. Most notably, Authorized Heritage examines how governments became the mediators of what is heritage and, just as significantly, what is not.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hold our history in your hands, with a spectacular virtual museum that is at once a sweeping exploration of Canadian history and culture, an indispensable reference guide and a remarkable treasury of information. Welcome to a museum so vast and full of wonder that it could only be called Canada. Each of The Museum Called Canada's 25 rooms houses carefully chosen exhibits that illuminate a significant historical theme. This majestic collection brings together high art and popular culture, science and nature, rare objects and whimsical ephemera. Here you will see the empty eye sockets of Tyrannosaurus Rex and be able to examine intricate and ethereal wood-carved angels built for Quebec's Rideau Chapel. Exhibits span the breadth of our nation, from the Yuquot Whaler's Shrine of Vancouver Island's Nootka to an anti-Confederation poster from the controversially soon-to-be-province Newfoundland. Your guide to the collection is historian and author Charlotte Gray. For each room in the museum, Gray has written a short essay that delves into the world of a particularly evocative artifact and its importance in the context of the room's theme and time period. The Museum Called Canada -- with its expansive vision, its surprising juxtapositions, its visual feasts and intellectual explorations -- is a beautiful and inspiring place that you will want to visit again and again.

  • Release : 2010
  • ISBN : 0774818433
  • Pages : 344 pages

Download or read book Gathering Places written by Laura Lynn Peers and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: British traders and Ojibwe hunters. Cree women and their metis daughters. Explorers and anthropologists and Aboriginal guides and informants. These people, their relationships, and their complex identities and worldviews were not featured in histories of North America until the 1970s, when scholars from multiple disciplines began to bring new perspectives and approaches to bear on the past. Gathering Places presents some of the most innovative and interdisciplinary approaches to metis, fur trade, and First Nations history being practised today. Whether they are discussing dietary practices on the Plateau, trees as cultural and geographical markers in the trade, the meanings of totemic signatures, issues of representation in public history, or the writings of Aboriginal anthropologists and historians, the authors link archival, archaeological, material, oral, and ethnographic evidence to offer novel explorations that extend beyond earlier scholarship centred on the archive. They draw on Aboriginal perspectives, material forms of evidence, and personal approaches to history to illuminate cross-cultural encounters and challenge older approaches to the past. These fascinating essays on aspects of the history of Rupert’s Land mark a significant departure from the old paradigm of history writing and will serve as models for recovering and communicating Aboriginal and cross-cultural experiences and perspectives.
