Download or read book Marine Protected Areas for Whales Dolphins and Porpoises written by Erich Hoyt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-10-02 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of the widely praised Marine Protected Areas for Whales, Dolphins and Porpoises, published in 2005, led to numerous new marine protected area proposals and a number of notable conservation successes around the world. In this completely revised and expanded second edition, new developments in the Mediterranean, Caribbean and Pacific are described, as well as future directions for High Seas protection. New sections show how to design and manage MPAs in an ever noisier ocean subject to climate change, increased shipping and hydrocarbon exploration. The process of protected area creation for cetaceans has been accelerated and more than 200 exciting new places are detailed in this edition. This book provides a route map for MPA managers, as well as countries, to meet the ambitious targets for highly protected MPA networks by 2012 and 2020. This book is a key conservation tool and a springboard for worldwide change in human attitudes toward the world ocean where all life originated and where the majority of life on Earth still lives.
Download or read book The Cumulative Effects of Development and Land Use at Prince Edward Island National Park written by Todd Leon Keith and published by Minister of Public Works and Government Services. This book was released on 1996 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prince Edward Island National Park is a narrow coastal strip on the Island's north shore, established in 1937 as a recreational seaside park. The purpose of the Park within Parks Canada's representative system plan is to protect an example of the Maritime Plain natural region, in particular the coastal barrier beaches and dune systems. The agency's ability to protect the Park's resources is being inhibited by the popularity of the beaches as recreational destinations, and the cumulative impact of visitor pressure, Park developments, and Park practices threatens the sustainability of the Park ecosystem. This study addresses the concern over cumulative environmental impacts in the Park and includes an introduction on cumulative effects assessment, an extensive literature review, and assessment of cumulative effects of previous, current, and proposed developments in the Park. The significance of the impacts on key resources is discussed and mitigation measures are suggested with regard to natural habitat, aquatic systems, flora, and fauna. Recommendations are made for preserving park habitat and establishing monitoring programs.

Download or read book Conservation of the Endangered Piping Plover Charadrius Melodus in Canada s National Parks written by Gary Neil Corbett and published by Halifax, N.S. : Parks Canada, Atlantic Region. This book was released on 1997 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The piping plover is a shorebird listed as endangered which breeds in only three Canadian national parks. This study compares a five-year dataset (1983-87) collected before special protection measures were implemented in 1988, with a five-year data set immediately following implementation (1988-92). The protection measures included closing to public use of nesting areas vulnerable to human disturbance, and protection of nests from depredation by wire mesh enclosures. In addition, comprehensive interpretation and public education programs have sought co-operation and support from the beach-using public. Results presented include nesting and hatching success, fledging success, survival rates, nest predation and abandonment rates, and nest losses due to storm flooding.

Download or read book Changing Parks written by John S. Marsh and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 1998-05-15 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important book is a must for everyone concerned with the heritage and future of Canada’s parks. Contributors include an impressive assembly of noted park experts ranging from academic authorities and government parks personnel to concerned nonpolitical park supporters. Since the establishment of Banff National Park in 1885 and Algonquin Provincial Park in 1893, parklands have been part of Canada’s heritage. Where other protected areas, such as forest reserves, heritage rivers and greenways, have also been created, a more comprehensive view of the creation and management of conservation areas and marshland is discussed. Cooperative approaches to park management recognize the regional context of parks with respect to local communities, as well as the inclusion of more diverse groups of people, particularly Aboriginals. This work encourages the general public to take an interest in our priceless park heritage.
