Book PRINC BIOCH TOXIC SEE 2ED CL

Download or read book PRINC BIOCH TOXIC SEE 2ED CL written by John A. Timbrell and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1982-06 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research into the biochemical basis of toxicology has expanded rapidly over recent years, amidst concerns over the adverse effects of drugs, environmental pollution and occupational hazards. Following the acclaimed first two editions of Principles of Biochemical Toxicology, the author has expanded the text to include summary sections, questions and model answers and thoroughly revised artwork. These features, plus the new easy-to-read format, will make biochemical toxicology more accessible to undergraduates and postgraduates encountering the subject for the first time. This comprehensive textbook provides a thorough explanation of dose-response relationships, disposition and metabolism, toxic responses to foreign compounds and detailed examples to illustrate mechanisms of toxicity. Students and lecturers will find the clear and concise approach, which established this book as the leading textbook in its field, an essential aid to learning and teaching.

Book How Tobacco Smoke Causes Disease

Download or read book How Tobacco Smoke Causes Disease written by United States. Public Health Service. Office of the Surgeon General and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report considers the biological and behavioral mechanisms that may underlie the pathogenicity of tobacco smoke. Many Surgeon General's reports have considered research findings on mechanisms in assessing the biological plausibility of associations observed in epidemiologic studies. Mechanisms of disease are important because they may provide plausibility, which is one of the guideline criteria for assessing evidence on causation. This report specifically reviews the evidence on the potential mechanisms by which smoking causes diseases and considers whether a mechanism is likely to be operative in the production of human disease by tobacco smoke. This evidence is relevant to understanding how smoking causes disease, to identifying those who may be particularly susceptible, and to assessing the potential risks of tobacco products.

Download or read book Improving Diagnosis in Health Care written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2015-12-29 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Getting the right diagnosis is a key aspect of health care - it provides an explanation of a patient's health problem and informs subsequent health care decisions. The diagnostic process is a complex, collaborative activity that involves clinical reasoning and information gathering to determine a patient's health problem. According to Improving Diagnosis in Health Care, diagnostic errors-inaccurate or delayed diagnoses-persist throughout all settings of care and continue to harm an unacceptable number of patients. It is likely that most people will experience at least one diagnostic error in their lifetime, sometimes with devastating consequences. Diagnostic errors may cause harm to patients by preventing or delaying appropriate treatment, providing unnecessary or harmful treatment, or resulting in psychological or financial repercussions. The committee concluded that improving the diagnostic process is not only possible, but also represents a moral, professional, and public health imperative. Improving Diagnosis in Health Care, a continuation of the landmark Institute of Medicine reports To Err Is Human (2000) and Crossing the Quality Chasm (2001), finds that diagnosis-and, in particular, the occurrence of diagnostic errorsâ€"has been largely unappreciated in efforts to improve the quality and safety of health care. Without a dedicated focus on improving diagnosis, diagnostic errors will likely worsen as the delivery of health care and the diagnostic process continue to increase in complexity. Just as the diagnostic process is a collaborative activity, improving diagnosis will require collaboration and a widespread commitment to change among health care professionals, health care organizations, patients and their families, researchers, and policy makers. The recommendations of Improving Diagnosis in Health Care contribute to the growing momentum for change in this crucial area of health care quality and safety.

Book Water Transport and Biological Membranes

Download or read book Water Transport and Biological Membranes written by Gheorghe Benga and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-05-04 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main purpose of this book is to provide in-depth presentation of physical techniques for measuring water transport and their applications to a variety of biological membranes, from model membrane systems to cell membranes, and then from isolated cells to multicellular barrier systems, such as epithelia or even whole organisms. This survey of water transport in such a broad range of membrane systems will hopefully contribute to understanding of the structure-function relationships and molecular mechanisms of water permeation. Moreover, the description of various techniques, together with a review of literature will enable the readers to assess whether a technique would be useful in helping to solve his or her particular problem of research and will also expand their competence in these techniques. The book consists of two volumes.

Book Dietary Reference Intakes for Vitamin A Vitamin K Arsenic Boron Chromium Copper Iodine Iron Manganese Molybdenum Nickel Silicon Vanadium and Zinc

Download or read book Dietary Reference Intakes for Vitamin A Vitamin K Arsenic Boron Chromium Copper Iodine Iron Manganese Molybdenum Nickel Silicon Vanadium and Zinc written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-07-19 with total page 798 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the newest release in the authoritative series issued by the National Academy of Sciences on dietary reference intakes (DRIs). This series provides recommended intakes, such as Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs), for use in planning nutritionally adequate diets for individuals based on age and gender. In addition, a new reference intake, the Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL), has also been established to assist an individual in knowing how much is "too much" of a nutrient. Based on the Institute of Medicine's review of the scientific literature regarding dietary micronutrients, recommendations have been formulated regarding vitamins A and K, iron, iodine, chromium, copper, manganese, molybdenum, zinc, and other potentially beneficial trace elements such as boron to determine the roles, if any, they play in health. The book also: Reviews selected components of food that may influence the bioavailability of these compounds. Develops estimates of dietary intake of these compounds that are compatible with good nutrition throughout the life span and that may decrease risk of chronic disease where data indicate they play a role. Determines Tolerable Upper Intake levels for each nutrient reviewed where adequate scientific data are available in specific population subgroups. Identifies research needed to improve knowledge of the role of these micronutrients in human health. This book will be important to professionals in nutrition research and education.

Book Anabolic Treatments for Osteoporosis

Download or read book Anabolic Treatments for Osteoporosis written by James F. Whitfield and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1997-10-20 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Osteoporosis, a growing epidemic among women in North America, Europe, and Japan, is a painful, costly disease that has presented a treatment challenge to healthcare professionals. Until recently, therapies have focused on agents that slow bone resorption, and have had only limited success at increasing bone mass. However, exciting new developments are on the verge of changing the treatment of this debilitating disorder. Two anabolic agents, the parathyroid hormone (PTH) and the fluoride ion, show tremendous promise as tools for building and retaining bone - with no adverse side effects. Anabolic Treatments for Osteoporosis is a comprehensive account of the latest studies that have been carried out on these two agents, and a thorough assessment of their prospects as osteoporosis therapeutics. This unique book combines basic science and up-to-date clinical data to present a complete picture of this breakthrough in the treatment of a globally significant health issue.
