Book Formation Of The Solar System The Theories Old And New 2nd Edition

Download or read book Formation Of The Solar System The Theories Old And New 2nd Edition written by Michael Mark Woolfson and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2014-09-11 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fully-updated second edition remains the only truly detailed exploration of the origins of our Solar System, written by an authority in the field. Unlike other authors, Michael Woolfson focuses on the formation of the solar system, engaging the reader in an intelligent yet accessible discussion of the development of ideas about how the Solar System formed from ancient times to the present.Within the last five decades new observations and new theoretical advances have transformed the way scientists think about the problem of finding a plausible theory. Spacecraft and landers have explored the planets of the Solar System, observations have been made of Solar-System bodies outside the region of the planets and planets have been detected and observed around many solar-type stars. This new edition brings in the most recent discoveries, including the establishment of dwarf planets and challenges to the ‘standard model’ of planet formation — the Solar Nebula Theory. While presenting the most up-to-date material and the underlying science of the theories described, the book avoids technical jargon and terminology. It thus remains a digestible read for the non-expert interested reader, whilst being detailed and comprehensive enough to be used as an undergraduate physics and astronomy textbook, where the formation of the solar system is a key part of the course.Michael Woolfson is Emeritus Professor of Theoretical Physics at University of York and is an award-winning crystallographer and astronomer.

Download or read book Is Pluto a Planet written by David A. Weintraub and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2008-12-14 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Note from the Author: On August 24, 2006, at the 26th General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) in Prague, by a majority vote of only the 424 members present, the IAU (an organization of over 10,000 members) passed a resolution defining planet in such a way as to exclude Pluto and established a new class of objects in the solar system to be called "dwarf planets," which was deliberately designed to include Pluto. With the discovery of Eris (2003 UB313)--an outer solar system object thought to be both slightly larger than Pluto and twice as far from the Sun--astronomers have again been thrown into an age-old debate about what is and what is not a planet. One of many sizeable hunks of rock and ice in the Kuiper Belt, Eris has resisted easy classification and inspired much controversy over the definition of planethood. But, Pluto itself has been subject to controversy since its discovery in 1930, and questions over its status linger. Is it a planet? What exactly is a planet? Is Pluto a Planet? tells the story of how the meaning of the word "planet" has changed from antiquity to the present day, as new objects in our solar system have been discovered. In lively, thoroughly accessible prose, David Weintraub provides the historical, philosophical, and astronomical background that allows us to decide for ourselves whether Pluto is indeed a planet. The number of possible planets has ranged widely over the centuries, from five to seventeen. This book makes sense of it all--from the ancient Greeks' observation that some stars wander while others don't; to Copernicus, who made Earth a planet but rejected the Sun and the Moon; to the discoveries of comets, Uranus, Ceres, the asteroid belt, Neptune, Pluto, centaurs, the Kuiper Belt and Eris, and extrasolar planets. Weaving the history of our thinking about planets and cosmology into a single, remarkable story, Is Pluto a Planet? is for all those who seek a fuller understanding of the science surrounding both Pluto and the provocative recent discoveries in our outer solar system.

Book Planet Earth Past and Present

Download or read book Planet Earth Past and Present written by Michael Carroll and published by Springer. This book was released on 2023-10-29 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Earth is not the world it once was, and it is not the world it will always be. This book describes the exciting, complex, and occasionally baffling history of our own planet. Over the course of its 4.5 billion years, Earth has undergone astonishing changes to its surface and atmosphere, at times more closely resembling other planets in our Solar System than the habitable, teeming biosphere of today. Through these otherworldly analogs, author-illustrator Michael Carroll teaches readers about different aspects of our own planet’s past. Our nearest cosmic neighbor, Venus, offers insights into Earth’s own young atmosphere and surface, while Saturn’s moon Titan may offer a window into the genesis of life on Earth. Planet Earth, Past and Present explores these and many more connections. Original art accompanies each chapter, depicting major stages of the Earth’s evolution and providing vivid comparisons to other planets or moons. Come along on this journey through the Solar System—a journey that ultimately leads us home.

This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: CHAPTER VII. The Present Evolutionary Period of Mars. The important features of this planet are its relative distance from the Sun (141,500,000 miles), about one and one-half times the distance of the Earth from the solar body; its seasonal polar caps; and its canals, also seasonal, stretching from the summer pole beyond the equator, and well towards the winter pole. The volume of Mars is one-seventh that of the Earth, and its density is calculated as seven-tenths that of the Earth. In as much as the planet is further from the Sun than the Earth so it is behind in evolutionary period. Mars is probably at that period corresponding to the arcluean age of the Earth when the primary or Lau- rentian system of rocks was formed. A difference of opinion exists among observers as to there being water on Mars. Spectra of planets must vary according to their positions relative to the Sun and the Earth. Mars in conjunction and in opposition will reflect solar light from the hemisphere proximate to the Sun, where his atmosphere will contain little or no water. In quadrature, especially if the planet's winter pole can be viewed, is the most favorable position to get the spectrum of water. Mars has but one water cycle: From surface water to the cloud, H20, thence to the winter pole where it manifests as a snow or ice cap, 11262, thence from the same, now summer pole, through the canals toward the then winter pole. Thus Mars is tearing up his polar unstratified rocks and forming Laurentian stratifications. The snow caps at the poles of Mars enlarge during their respective winters and become smaller or entirely disappear during their summers. It seems that in the water cycle of Mars the water-vapor in the atmosphere and the water-liquid in canals seek the pole of the planet furthest f...

Book Evolution of the Solar System

Download or read book Evolution of the Solar System written by Gustaf Arrhenius and published by . This book was released on 2004-12-01 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present analysis of the origin and evolution of the solar system represents a fusion of two initially independent approaches to the problem. One of us (Alfven) started from a study of the physical processes (1942, 1943a, 1946; summarized in a monograph in 1954), and the other (Arrhenius) from experimental studies of plasma-solid reactions and from chemical and mineralogical analyses of meteorites and lunar and terrestrial samples. Joined by the common belief that the complicated events leading to the present structure of the solar system can be understood only by an integrated chemical-physical approach, we have established a collaboration at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), in La Jolla, during the last seven years. Our work, together with that of many colleagues in La Jolla, Stockholm, and elsewhere, has resulted in a series of papers describing the general principles of our joint approach, experimental results, and model approximations for some of the most important processes. The present volume is a summary of our results, which we have tried to present in such a form as to make the physics understandable to chemists and the chemistry understandable to physicists. Our primary concern has been to establish general constraints on applicable models. Hence we have avoided complex mathematical treatment in cases where approximations are sufficient to clarify the general character of the processes.

Book The Origin and Evolution of the Solar System

Download or read book The Origin and Evolution of the Solar System written by Michael M. Woolfson and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The origin of the solar system has been a matter of speculation for many centuries, and since the time of Newton it has been possible to apply scientific principles to the problem. A succession of theories, starting with that of Pierre Laplace in 1796, has gained general acceptance, only to fall from favor due to its contradiction in some basic scientific principle or new heavenly observation. Modern observations by spacecraft of the solar system, the stars, and extra-solar planetary systems continuously provide new information that may be helpful in finding a plausible theory as well as present new constraints for any such theory to satisfy. The Origin and Evolution of the Solar System begins by describing historical (pre-1950) theories and illustrating why they became unacceptable. The main part of the book critically examines five extant theories, including the current paradigm, the solar nebula theory, to determine how well they fit with accepted scientific principles and observations. This analysis shows that the solar nebula theory satisfies the principles and observational constraints no better than its predecessors. The capture theory put forward by the author fares better and also indicates an initial scenario leading to a causal series of events that explain all the major features of the solar system.
