Book Prickly Pear as Stock Feed

Download or read book Prickly Pear as Stock Feed written by David Griffiths and published by . This book was released on 1920 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Prickly pears may be fed to live stock in a green, succulent condition right from the field as needed. They require no curing, housing, or storage. In this they offer an advantage over most crops. They can be grown at a minimum expense, only the cost of planting and keeping down the weeds being involved, although the yield, like that of most crops is in direct proportion to the care and labor bestowed. Prickly pear will thrive where the rainfall is too irregular for most standard farm crops. Its yields are large and cumulative, increasing from year to year, so that a heavy tonnage may be had from small areas or use at critical periods. Prickly pear is green and succulent and admirably adapted to produce "good condition" in cattle when used with dry feeds. Cattle in brush pastures are known to have subsisted upon it even without water for long periods."--[2].

This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Feeding Prickly Pear to Stock in Texas Bulletin No. 74 of the Bureau of Plant Industry suggested in a brief, popular way some of the more important features of the prob lem of utilizing cacti as feed for live stock. The present paper is a continuation of that publication, designed to furnish information upon one feature of the problem treated but slightly in the bulletin mentioned. In the data here presented the aim has been to secure a record of the value of pear as commonly fed. It has not been the main pur pose to determine the best methods of feeding this forage plant. In the experiments outlined the endeavor was made to change cur rent practice no more than was necessary to secure the essential data. To determine accurately the value of prickly pear as a dairy or fattening ration would require more elaborate experiments. It has been the aim to give here Simply a record of what the rancher realizes from his pear by the ordinary methods of feeding, though such othef data as the records have revealed have been noted. Two experiments are outlined, both conducted under the imme diate supervision of ranchers in southern Texas in cooperation with the Bureau of Plant Industry. 'the first test was undertaken by Mr. Alexander Sinclair, of San Antonio, to whom the greatest credit is due, not only for the conduct of the work but also for assist ance in planning the experiments and for suggestions in connection with the interpretation of results. The actual work was performed under his immediate direction by his son, Mr. William Sinclair. The second test was conducted by Mr. T. A. Coleman upon his ranch at Encinal. The feeding was done under Mr. Coleman's immediate supervision, and to his interest and varied experience is due whatever success has been attained. This book was released on 2021-09-27 with total page 1045 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Opuntia fruits, commonly known as cactus pears or prickly pears, have been suggested by the Food and Agriculture Organization to be a promising and strategic crop in regions suffering from lack of water. In Mexico, India, South Africa, and the Mediterranean, the Opuntia fruits have become popular due to their nutritive value and health-promoting benefits, including antioxidant, antiulcerogenic and antiatherogenic traits and protective effects against LDL oxidation. Additionally, readily absorbable sugars, high vitamin C and mineral content, and a pleasant flavour make Opuntia tailor-made for novel foods. Due to their ecological advantages, high functional value, and health-related traits, Opuntia fruits can be highly exploited in different food processing applications. For instance, Opuntia cactus fruits are used for the preparation of juices and marmalades; Opuntia cactus plants are used to feed animals in African and Latin American countries; Peruvian farmers cultivate Opuntia cactus for growing the cochineal (Dactylopius coccus) insect and producing the natural dye carmine; and the commercial production of food and non-food products from Opuntia has been established in Mexico, USA and several Mediterranean countries. Opuntia spp.: Chemistry, Bioactivity and Industrial Applications creates a multidisciplinary forum of discussion on Opuntia cactus with special emphasis on its horticulture, post-harvest, marketability, chemistry, functionality, health-promoting properties, technology and processing. The text includes detailed discussion of the impact of traditional and innovative processing on the recovery of high-added value compounds from Opuntia spp. by-products. Later chapters explore the potential applications of Opuntia spp. in food, cosmetics and pharmaceutical products.
