Book Transaction Costs and Competition Among Audit Firms in Local Markets

Download or read book Transaction Costs and Competition Among Audit Firms in Local Markets written by Ling Chu and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We develop a measure to capture an audit firm's competitive position in a local audit market based on the transaction costs of changing audit firms included in DeAngelo's (1981) multi-period audit pricing model. Our competition measure reflects the size difference between the largest audit firm in a market and the other audit firms operating in that market. We find that audit fees of client firm i decrease as this size difference increases. This result suggests that dominant audit firms charge higher audit fees because of their significant local competitive advantage over smaller audit firms. In addition, we show that the boundaries of audit markets are mainly specified by client industry at the city level. However, the size of operations of a dominant audit firm outside such markets can enhance its competitive advantage within a client-industry, city-level market. Our study provides a market-power-based explanation for the excess audit fees earned by the largest audit firm(s) in local audit markets and advances understanding of audit market competition.

Book The Economics of Audit Quality

Download or read book The Economics of Audit Quality written by Benito Arrunada and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on market mechanisms which protect quality in the provision of audit services. The role of public regulation is thus situated in the context defmed by the presence of these safeguard mechanisms. The book aims to contribute to a better understanding of these market mechanisms, which helps in defining the con tent of rules and the function of regulatory bodies in facilitating and strengthening the protective operation of the market. An analysis at a more general level is provided in the three chapters making up Part 1. In the four chapters of Part 2, on the other hand, this analysis is applied to a particular problem to determine how those non-audit services often provided by auditors to their audit clients should be regulated. Finally, Chapter 8 contains a summary of the analysis and conclusions of the work. The conclusion with regard to non-audit services is that their provision generates beneficial effects in terms of costs, technical competence, professional judgment and competition and, moreover, need not prejudice auditor independence or the quality of these services. This as sessment leads, in the normative sphere, to recommending a legislative policy aimed at facilitating the development and use of safeguards provided by the free action of market forces. Regulation should thus aim to enable the parties-audit firms, self-regulatory bodies and audit clients-to discover through competitive market interaction both the most efficient mix of services and the corresponding quality safeguards, adjusting for the costs and benefits of each possibility.

Book Internalizing the External Audit

Download or read book Internalizing the External Audit written by Cameron K.J. Morrill and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent pronouncements by professional accounting bodies in both the United States and Canada, and concerns about lowering audit fees, both fuel and reflect a strong interest in the participation of internal auditors in the external audit. This paper presents the results of a partial least squares analysis of survey data collected from directors of internal audit departments of Canadian organizations. The results indicate that some transaction cost variables, particularly transaction-specific investment, are significantly associated with internal audit participation in the external audit.

Book Auditing Theory and Practice

Download or read book Auditing Theory and Practice written by Michael Pratt and published by Cengage AU. This book was released on 2022-10-12 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Auditing Theory and Practice incorporates the standards set by Australia's AUASB (Auditing and Assurance Standards Board) and New Zealand's NZAuASB (New Zealand Auditing and Assurance Standards Board). Parts 1-4 of the reader-friendly text illustrate the four major phases of the audit. Part 5 allows instructors to pick and mix content to match both shorter and longer courses, with dedicated chapters on fraud and sustainability audits, public-sector and non-profit-sector audits and internal audit, for both AUASB and NZAuASB. By linking theory – through historical context and examples – to practice, students learn why a particular practice is important, giving examples of audit failures, and then how to apply it. This approach enhances understanding of the application of professional scepticism in auditing and prepares learners for real-world auditing.

Book The Future of Audit

Download or read book The Future of Audit written by Keith A. Houghton and published by ANU E Press. This book was released on 2010-08-01 with total page 773 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a time when increased independence requirements for auditors, legal backing for auditing standards, and increased audit documentation requirements have occurred, this book examines key issues in the market for audit services in Australia. It investigates issues including: the understandability of audit and the state of the audit expectations gap; auditors' business acumen and industry expertise; the auditors' use of materiality; whether or not the increasingly prescriptive nature of auditing is creating a distraction from the 'real' audit task and stifling auditors' judgement; whether or not CLERP 9 reforms involving audit partner rotation and restrictions on non-audit service provision are efficient and effective and reactions to the increasing scrutiny of auditors and audit firms by regulators. With its thorough coverage of contemporary issues, this book intersperses the authors' summaries, interpretations and recommendations with the perceptions, expressed in their own words in order to faithfully convey their candid assessments, of users of audit reports, purchasers and suppliers of the audit product, auditing standard setters and regulators of the audit market.
