Book excerpt: Tiffany Bluhm wishes this wasn't her story to tell. Yet like many women today who are taking action against sexual harassment and sexual assault, it is. Bluhm explores the complex dynamics of power and abuse in systems we all find ourselves in. With honesty and strength, she tells stories of how women have overcome silence to expose the truth about their ministry and professional leaders--and the backlash they so often face. In so doing, she empowers others to speak up against abuses of power. Addressing men and women in all work settings--within the church and beyond--popular author and podcast host Tiffany Bluhm sets out to understand the cultural and spiritual narratives that silence women and to illuminate the devastating emotional, financial, and social impact of silence in the face of injustice. As readers journey with Bluhm, they will be moved to find their own way, their own voice, and their own conviction for standing with women. They'll emerge more ready than ever to advocate for justice, healing, and resurrection.

Book At Home in the World

Download or read book At Home in the World written by Joyce Maynard and published by Picador. This book was released on 2010-04-01 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times bestselling author of Labor Day With a New Preface When it was first published in 1998, At Home in the World set off a furor in the literary world and beyond. Joyce Maynard's memoir broke a silence concerning her relationship—at age eighteen—with J.D. Salinger, the famously reclusive author of The Catcher in the Rye, then age fifty-three, who had read a story she wrote for The New York Times in her freshman year of college and sent her a letter that changed her life. Reviewers called her book "shameless" and "powerful" and its author was simultaneously reviled and cheered. With what some have viewed as shocking honesty, Maynard explores her coming of age in an alcoholic family, her mother's dream to mold her into a writer, her self-imposed exile from the world of her peers when she left Yale to live with Salinger, and her struggle to reclaim her sense of self in the crushing aftermath of his dismissal of her not long after her nineteenth birthday. A quarter of a century later—having become a writer, survived the end of her marriage and the deaths of her parents, and with an eighteen-year-old daughter of her own—Maynard pays a visit to the man who broke her heart. The story she tells—of the girl she was and the woman she became—is at once devastating, inspiring, and triumphant.

Behind locked doors. Then one day, he goes a step further and... well, one thing leads to another. Qatar has no choice. He has to kill her. And you know something? He likes it. When Deputy Chief Lucas Davenport takes the case, he assumes it’ll be straightforward police work. He couldn’t be more wrong. And to stop him Lucas has no choice but to walk right into his lair. WITH A NEW INTRODUCTION BY JOHN SANDFORD

Download or read book Pray While You re Prey written by Toni L. Wortherly and published by Artistic Esquire Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where do I begin with this review? I think I should take my sisters advice and repeat what she often tells me: If I cant say amen, just say ouch. Keeping that in mind, Im over here saying ouch because author Toni L. Wortherly is on my toe stomping pretty hard with this petite but powerful book. As a single Christian woman combating some of the issues of loneliness and frustration associated with living a single life, this book speaks volumes to me. There is nothing like reading what youre going through to let the reader know they are not alone on this journey. As Ive pledged my life to following the tenants of my faith, its good to have confirmation, in the form of a book, which I can reference from time to time. Ill admit that Im not crazy about the title; I dont like to be referred to as prey or as the hunted. The Word of God says: He that finds a wife, finds a good thing so a loose translation would mean that I am prey. I would hope that my mate wouldnt refer to me in this manner. The translation would also imply that Im weak or defenseless; I feel that Im a strong vessel, who patiently awaits capture. Pray While Youre Prey is a great read for single women. Those of us who have the desire to be spiritually grounded in all that we do, can draw strength from the scripture, interpretation and study questions found at the end of each chapter. This is a book to share with your entire cadre of single sister friends as we journey down the path to closeness with God and the quest to be a virtuous woman and wife.

Book excerpt: Lucas Davenport investigates a vitriolic blog that seems to be targeting the children of U.S. politicians in the latest thriller by #1 New York Times-bestselling author John Sandford. The daughter of a U.S. Senator is monitoring her social media presence when she finds a picture of herself on a strange blog. And there are other pictures . . . of the children of other influential Washington politicians, walking or standing outside their schools, each identified by name. Surrounding the photos are texts of vicious political rants from a motley variety of radical groups. It's obviously alarming--is there an unstable extremist tracking the loved ones of powerful politicians with deadly intent? But when the FBI is called in, there isn't much the feds can do. The anonymous photographer can't be pinned down to one location or IP address, and more importantly, at least to the paper-processing bureaucrats, no crime has actually been committed. With nowhere else to turn, influential Senators decide to call in someone who can operate outside the FBI's constraints: Lucas Davenport.

Book Say What

Download or read book Say What written by Joel T. Heinen and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2018-11-28 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religion is a funny thing. Most people believe in one or another and assert that theirs is true. Many religious people also assert that every other religion believed in by anyone else ranges from completely false to highly suspect. There are religions that believe in many gods, others that believe in one god, and there are even religions that preach no gods. There are also sects within religions that disavow other sects within the same religion. There are religions that are extinct and new religions formed all the time. The reformation of older religions is also ongoing. What all religions seem to have in common are (1) supernatural beliefs that others don't believe and (2) absolutely no real demonstrable evidence that can be repeated and shown to others in support of any of their supernatural beliefs. If you think about it, religion truly is a funny thing in every sense of that word. Many people define their religion to be the all-encompassing paradigm of their existence that causes them to do completely virtuous, altruistic things. Yet religion also causes others, who are equally or even more pious, to commit mass murder. And both have been true for many religions throughout history. This volume takes a broad and satirical look at religions writ large, mainly to question. It's aimed largely at atheists and those on the fence, but theists may be encouraged to read it too and question for themselves. How did you acquire religion? Why? What do you believe? Why? Why not believe other equally implausible things that others do believe? This volume is just a light hearted attempt to ask. C'est tout.

Book excerpt: Sexual shame causes women to feel far from God, live a secret life of sexual sin, doubt that God loves them, and even question their salvation. Sexual Shame in Women and How to Experience Freedom will help readers understand sexual shame as one of the root issues among women's sexual struggles, while focusing specifically on the issues of pornography and sexual abuse. Ministry leaders must help women find freedom from sexual shame to help them walk in sexual integrity, wholeness, and healing. The freedom journey begins through understanding the character of God, being known in biblical community, and understanding God's design for sexuality. This research project is a dissertation from Dallas Theological Seminary's DMin program.

Download or read book The Truer Trinity written by G.V. Loewen and published by Strategic Book Publishing & Rights Agency. This book was released on 2022-03-31 with total page 716 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “This was the truer source of Evelyn’s tears, that she couldn’t communicate with the dead. Been there, done that, she thought of human history. And wouldn’t you know it, contact, a second sun, a new world for humanity to live upon, none of that stopped history. Maybe time, for a moment, was stopped. The destruction of god and the devil both, the vanquishing of Seryxim, the loss of these two heroines for all time, the greatest beings who had ever lived.” (From the book.) A decade after their momentous and cosmic victory, the heroes find themselves suffering from a collective mid-life crisis whose source may be equally cosmic. With one world leader seemingly suicidal and another about to step down, Kristen, Mike, Evie, Mary, and the entire rest of the legendary community are once again called forth into the newly dual void of transliminal space and time. Events soon overtake them, from a coup on the pioneer human world, a civil war in Tudor England and the threat of one on that felid, as well as the wider yet mysterious calling of those chosen to sacrifice themselves in an ultimate gambit. Who is to go? When and why them? But the truer conflict lies within, as Keeley must confront her predestined fate, Maevery and her new life-love Lynn must confront their dark world of origin, and Kristen herself must not only repay Kylie a debt but also a much larger one owed to her own predecessor. In a series of bizarre yet transcendent maneuvers, felid mates Smiley and Astridyx along with their human kin Smithers discover a way to enjoin the greatest possible reunion. The shocking idea that the sisters of fate could be brought back, at once seems like both the ultimate solution and the ultimate mistake. “In a classic follow-up novel, Loewen’s now venerable pantheon are required to make one more tremendous effort to ensure not only the future of the galaxy, but possibly that of the entire universe as they know it to be. The flights of imagination needed to even begin to do either, take the heroes on their most visionary and dangerous journey yet. With the ethics of their actions often thrown aside, each of the saga’s principles must make choices that none of them would desire. The outcomes of these actions are at once horrifying and edifying, as the most celebrated and yet dreaded figures return in altered forms to face their own final fates. In doing so, none of their former friends remains untouched.” – Lynn Eddy, VP of Acquisitions, Strategic Book Publishing and Rights Company
