Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thus Robin Morgan (Contributing Editor, Ms. Magazine) describes Mary Elsie Robertson's Novel about a world which is after Freud and yet which is all too often Freudian in its underpinnings. The novel is the story of the narrator's journey towards understanding her brotherly/sisterly marriage and learning to balance roles as writer, mother, and woman in a world that she moves through, for a long time, as an innocent. The experiences Robertson describes will be familiar to all readers of contemporary fiction about American women. What Robertson makes of these experiences is a surprise that points to a better understanding of our timeless turmoil over love and marriage, over bonds and freedom. After Freud is a co-winner of the first annual Novel Competition sponsored by the Associated Writing Programs (AWP), a national non-profit organization of writers and writing programs supported by the National Endowment for the Arts.

Book excerpt: A Green Beret’s gripping memoir of American Special Forces in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. In 1970, on his second tour to Vietnam, Nick Brokhausen served in Recon Team Habu, CCN. Officially, it was known as the Studies and Observations group. In fact, this Special Forces squad, which Brokhausen calls “an unwashed, profane, ribald, joyously alive fraternity,” undertook some of the most dangerous and suicidal reconnaissance missions ever in the enemy-controlled territory of Cambodia and Laos. But they didn’t infiltrate the jungles alone. They fought alongside the Montagnards—oppressed minorities from the mountain highlands, trained by the US military in guerilla tactics, armed, accustomed to the wild, and fully engaged in a war against the North Vietnamese. Together this small unit formed the backbone of ground reconnaissance in the Republic of Vietnam, racking up medals for valor—but at a terrible cost. “In colorful, military-jargon-laced prose leavened by gallows humor, Brokhausen pulls few punches describing what it was like to navigate remote jungle terrain under the constant threat of enemy fire. A smartly written, insider’s view of one rarely seen Vietnam War battleground.” —Booklist “[An] exceptionally raw look at the Vietnam War just at the apex of its unpopularity. . . . This battle-scarred memoir is an excellent tribute to the generation that fought, laughed, and died in Southeast Asia.” —New York Journal of Books

Book The Habit of Lying

  • Author : John Vignaux Smyth
  • Publisher : Duke University Press

Download or read book The Habit of Lying written by John Vignaux Smyth and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2002-03-18 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lying appears to be ubiquitous, what Franz Kafka called "a universal principle”; yet, despite a number of recent books on the subject, it has been given comparatively little genuinely systematic attention by philosophers, social scientists, or even literary theorists. In The Habit of Lying John Vignaux Smyth examines three forms of falsification—lying, concealment, and fiction—and makes a strong critique of traditional approaches to each of them, and, above all, to the relations among them. With recourse to Rene Girard, Paul de Man, Theodor Adorno, Leo Strauss, and other theoreticians not usually considered together, Smyth arrives at some surprising conclusions about the connections between lying, mimesis, sacrifice, sadomasochism, and the sacred, among other central subjects. Arguing that the relation between lying and truthtelling has been characterized in the West by sharply sacrificial features, he begins with a critique of the philosophies of lying espoused by Kant and Sissela Bok, then concludes that the problem of truth and lies leads to the further problem of the relation between law and arbitrariness as well as to the relation between rationality and unanimity. Constructively criticizing the work of such philosophers as Bertrand Russell, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Richard Rorty, and Nelson Goodman, Smyth shows how these problems occur comparably in fiction theory and how Paul de Man’s definition of fiction as arbitrariness finds confirmation in analytic philosophy. Through the novels of Defoe, Stendhal, and Beckett—with topics ranging from Defoe’s treatment of lies, fiction, and obscenity to Beckett’s treatment of the anus and the sacred—Smyth demonstrates how these texts generalize the issues of mendacity, concealment, and sacrificial arbitrariness in Girard’s sense to almost every aspect of experience, fiction theory, and cultural life. The final section of the book, taking its cue from Shakespeare, elaborates a sacrificial view of the history of fashion and dress concealment.

The fact that I’ve revived a legendary forest, I keep getting visions of castles, and all I can think about is Bane and I all tangled up together, has only given me more questions and fewer answers. Is the bond I feel between us just a product of Bane’s lustful magic, or is it something more? Something legendary? Bane The last thing I need is another companion to warm my bed after what happened last year, but the moment I run into Violet McCreanor—Blackthorn’s newest little ingénue—I know I’m doomed. Not just because she smells like heaven, or because I can’t stop thinking about her, but because the bond I feel with her is more than magic, more than lust. She is my Anam Cara, my soul’s mate. But with my cursed history, can I overcome my demons with the possibility of finding what I desire most? A mate? Or will history repeat itself and destroy the last bit of hope I have?
