Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Handbook of Chinese Applied Linguistics is written for those wanting to acquire comprehensive knowledge of China, the diaspora and the Sino-sphere communities through Chinese language. It examines how Chinese language is used in different contexts, and how the use of Chinese language affects culture, society, expression of self and persuasion of others; as well as how neurophysiological aspects of language disorder affect how we function and how the advance of technology changes the way the Chinese language is used and perceived. The Handbook concentrates on the cultural, societal and communicative characteristics of the Chinese language environment. Focusing on language use in action, in context and in vivo, this book intends to lay empirical grounds for collaboration and synergy among different fields.

Book Phonological Differences in Hong Kong English

Download or read book Phonological Differences in Hong Kong English written by Daria Poklad and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2015-11-25 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2013 im Fachbereich Anglistik - Linguistik, Note: 1,7, Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Veranstaltung: Introduction to Intercultural Communication in Post-colonial Contexts, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: The following paper deals with the phonological differences in Hong Kong English in comparison to Standard English. First I will present a general view of the language situation in Hong Kong. Then in the third chapter some of the main phonological variations existing in Hong Kong English will be presented. In a further step, I will analyze if these variations can be found in two interviews with Hong Kong-born actor Jackie Chan who has lived and worked several years in the United States and examine how they differ from Standard English, before summing up the results in the conclusion. Hong Kong came under British control as a result of the Opium Wars with China from 1839 to 1842 and from 1856 to 1860 and developed since then as a trading centre. Throughout the British colonial period from 1842 to 1997 a minority of British administrators and traders co-existed with a large majority of Chinese traders and laborers. Since most Chinese could speak Cantonese, there was no need for a lingua franca, but only for a language to use with influential foreigners (Melchers 163). Therefore the knowledge of English was spread almost entirely through the education system, which increasingly used English as a medium (ibid.). In 1997 Hong Kong was returned to Chinese sovereignty. Today, English is very widely used in the educational and legal system and for dealing with international business partners (ibid. 164). Moreover, English is becoming ‘localized’ and is used to some extend for everyday interaction among locals who all speak Cantonese (ibid.). Nevertheless, the English spoken in Hong Kong differs in regard to grammar, lexis and phonological aspects from Standard English as Received Pronunciation (RP) or General American (GA).

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled Phonological Variation: The Case of the Syllable-final Velar Nasal in Cantonese submitted by Wong Suet Yin for the degree of Master of Arts at the University of Hong Kong in June 2005 Phonological variation has been a "hot topic" in sociolinguistics. However, phonological variation in the case of syllable-final velar nasal in Cantonese has not been much studied. The present research focused on this particular issue to see if the velar nasal in Cantonese is undergoing a process of alveolarization. The velar nasal can occur after seven types of vowel. For example, the combination of // and // forms // as in 港 /k/ "harbour." The research studied these syllables by looking at the ways in which the innovative variant, that is the alveolar nasal, and the conservative variant, i.e. the velar nasal, are used. The study took into account the following factors in the variation: age, sex and formality of speech. A questionnaire survey, a recording session and an open ended interview were carried out and it was found that a sound change from syllable-final velar nasal to alveolar nasal seems to be at the beginning of the second stage of the S-curve pattern as mentioned by Aitchison (1991), which is based on S Y Wang's theory of lexical diffusion (1979). This means the change is likely to be speeding up and a change to the alveolar nasal may soon be completed in the near future. Book Early Cantonese Transliterations as a Phonological Basis for Modern Hong Kong English

Download or read book Early Cantonese Transliterations as a Phonological Basis for Modern Hong Kong English written by Yuting Li and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research question of this dissertation is whether the early Cantonese-English contact provides a phonological basis to the development of Hong Kong English (HKE henceforth). The dissertation provides an affirmative answer by studying four Cantonese-English bilingual dictionaries in the mid 19th and early 20th centuries. The empirical evidence from the four bilingual dictionaries reveals three types of phenomena: inheritance, stabilization, and deviation. The phenomenon of inheritance refers to the phonological features discovered in the early Cantonese-English contact that have persisted in modern HKE. The phenomenon of stabilization includes the phonological features of the early Cantonese-English contact that are fortified and regularized in modern HKE. The phenomenon of deviation indicates certain phonological features of the early Cantonese-English contact differ from those of modern HKE. The findings of the dissertation fill two research gaps in the literature of HKE. One research gap is the omission of the English acquisition patterns for average Hongkongers before mass English-language education was implemented in the 1970s. For the Hongkongers who had no access to formal schools, the Cantonese-English bilingual dictionaries were used as the learning materials in self-study or private schools. The other research gap is the lack of a historical perspective into the variations of modern HKE phonology. Most of the studies on HKE are synchronic in nature and fail to realize that the variations may be derived from the two different English acquisition patterns in history. This dissertation reveals that the phonology of the functional bilinguals in HKE (the HKE speakers who could use English for various formal and informal needs) might be influenced by the phonological features of inheritance and stabilization discovered in the early Cantonese-English contact. The findings establish the historical connections behind modern HKE phonology, enhancing the recognition of HKE as an autonomous New English Variety. This enables HKE to be the symbol of solidarity for Hongkongers. This dissertation investigates the historical data from the Cantonese-English bilingual dictionaries that remain largely unstudied for a long time. Transformed into a retrievable dataset, the historical data can be used for linguistic theorizing.
