Book Political Communication

Download or read book Political Communication written by Richard M. Perloff and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-18 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this political communication text, Richard M. Perloff examines the various ways in which messages are constructed and communicated from public officials and politicians through the mass media to the ultimate receivers-the people. With a focus on the history of political communication, he provides an overview of the most significant issues in the study of politics and the media. In addition to synthesizing facts and theories, and highlighting the scholarly contributions made to the understanding of political communication effects, Political Communication addresses such factors as the rhetorical accomplishments of American presidents, the ongoing tangles between the press and the presidency, and the historical roots of politics as it is practiced and studied today. It also addresses major issues about the press and politics that continually resurface, such as question of press bias and the use and manipulation of media by politicians to accomplish national goals. As a comprehensive and engaging introduction to contemporary political communication, this volume provides all readers with a historical perspective on American politics and press and offers a unique appreciation of the strengths and virtues of political communication in America.

Book Creating Political Presence

Download or read book Creating Political Presence written by Dario Castiglione and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2018-12-28 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For at least two centuries, democratic representation has been at the center of debate. Should elected representatives express the views of the majority, or do they have the discretion to interpret their constituents’ interests? How can representatives balance the desires of their parties and their electors? What should be done to strengthen the representation of groups that have been excluded from the political system? Representative democracy itself remains frequently contested, regarded as incapable of reflecting the will of the masses, or inadequate for today’s global governance. Recently, however, this view of democratic representation has been under attack for its failure to capture the performative and constructive elements of the process of representation, and a new literature more attentive to these aspects of the relationship between representatives and the represented has arisen. In Creating Political Presence, a diverse and international group of scholars explores the implications of such a turn. Two broad, overlapping perspectives emerge. In the first section, the contributions investigate how political representation relates to empowerment, either facilitating or interfering with the capacity of citizens to develop autonomous judgment in collective decision making. Contributions in the second section look at representation from the perspective of inclusion, focusing on how representative relationships and claims articulate the demands of those who are excluded or have no voice. The final section examines political representation from a more systemic perspective, exploring its broader environmental conditions and the way it acquires democratic legitimacy.

Book Political Journalism in Comparative Perspective

Download or read book Political Journalism in Comparative Perspective written by Erik Albæk and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-04-28 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Political journalism is often under fire. Conventional wisdom and much scholarly research suggest that journalists are cynics and political pundits. Political news is void of substance and overly focused on strategy and persons. Citizens do not learn from the news, are politically cynical, and are dissatisfied with the media. This book challenges these assumptions, which are often based on single-country studies with limited empirical observations about the relation between news production, content, and journalism's effects. Based on interviews with journalists, a systematic content analysis of political news, and panel survey data in different countries, this book tests how different systems and media-politics relations condition the contents of political news. It shows how different content creates different effects, and demonstrates that under the right circumstances citizens learn from political news, do not become cynical, and are satisfied with political journalism.

Book Parliament and Pressure Politics

Download or read book Parliament and Pressure Politics written by Michael Rush and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1990 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pressure-group activity has increased in the British Parliament in recent years. This study examines the activities of pressure groups in relation to individual MPs, legislation, select committees, party and all-party subject groups, political consultants, and the House of Lords. The essays adopt a broad definition of the term to include groups such as trade unions and business and professional organizations, as well as those bodies specifically created to exert political pressure. Providing a comprehensive picture of pressure-group activity in relation to Parliament, this book places it within the wider context of pressure politics in Britain today.

Book The War Against the Press

Download or read book The War Against the Press written by Peter Stoler and published by New York : Dodd, Mead. This book was released on 1986 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stoler, a senior correspondent for Time magazine, gives an account of the pressures journalists work under. He presents a history of journalism from the late 17th century to the end of World War II,and gives particular attention to important recent coverage: Vietnam, Watergate, the Iran hostage crisis, terrorism, and the Westmoreland and Sharon libel suits. The alleged "liberal bias" of the press, as well as a Gallup Organization in-depth study of the media are also examined. According to Stoler, the foes of the press are formidable and the press needs to realize that the right to know is limited by law and common sense, that people's privacy should be respected, and that there is a demarcation between news and entertainment. He concludes that the press should not be intimidated but should solicit public support for a free press. ISBN 0-396-08757-4: $17.95.
