Book From Presidential Transition to Integration

Download or read book From Presidential Transition to Integration written by and published by . This book was released on 2019-11-19 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why so many abrupt presidential exits? And how can we prevent them? There are hundreds of presidential transitions taking place every year, but many are doomed to derail early. Why is this? Often, it's because attention is paid only to the initial hire and transition. Though the search process is important in selecting a new president, it is merely one component in a larger integration process that will make or break a presidential tenure. If we are to prevent presidential derailments, then the integration needs to be explicit, strategic, well-executed, and monitored and owned by campus leaders, especially by the governing board. Drawing on research into hundreds of presidential transitions, filled with strategies that have been tested at colleges and universities, and written by a leading leadership consultant with contributions from former and current presidents, From Presidential Transition to Integration provides an in-depth handbook to setting up a new presidency for success. It is a must-read for aspiring presidents, boards, and executive search and transition committees.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A presidential transition has a major impact on the life of an institution. Hundreds of presidential transitions take place annually, and when they are not amicable and carefully orchestrated, they can scar both the institution and the president. Sanaghan, Goldstein, and Gaval estimate that more than one-third of the presidential transitions in higher education are involuntary and have a negative effect on the institution. This book is designed to provide assistance to presidents, trustees, faculty, and other important stakeholder groups and help them avoid the pitfalls of poorly managed transitions. The authors discuss how, with proper planning, care, and execution, this presidential passage can be an opportunity for a transitioning president, and those who surround him or her, to write a positive chapter in the campus history. Readers will discover that appropriately addressing the anxiety that accompanies major transitions_for both those joining the institution and those already present_is essential. Dozens of presidents, chancellors, board members, and other senior executives were interviewed for this book. Each major chapter includes selected personal observations, from these interviews, which illustrate the critical issues addressed in the book.

Book Leadership Transitions The New College President

Download or read book Leadership Transitions The New College President written by Judith Block McLaughlin and published by Jossey-Bass. This book was released on 1996-06-26 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For both new presidents and their institutions, the presidential leadership transition is an intense experience with serious ramifications for the success of the president's tenure. Ironically, although considerable time is spent orienting new stuedents to our institutions, little thought is given to designing an orientation or entry process for our senior leadership. This sourcebook describes some of the experiences of new presidents during their leadership transition, addresses the varying issues and dilemmas new presidents encounter, and offers advice based on research and first-hand experience. The volume is written for new and experienced presidents, for individuals who aspire to the presidency, and for those who work with new presidents and have a stake in seeing them succeed. This is the 93rd issue of the quarterly journal New Directions for Higher Education. For more information on the series, please see the Journals and Periodicals page.

Book Stepping Away

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In no other professional field do senior leaders habitually return to the rank-and-file workforce in the twilight of their careers. Corporate CEOs rarely conclude their working lives by resuming the duties of a mid-level account executive; on the verge of retirement, four-star generals do not return to the infantry. But in academia former senior leaders often conclude their careers by reprising the roles and responsibilities of a professor. Until now, leaders and institutions have been left to navigate these transitions on their own—often learning hard lessons that might have been avoided. Stepping Away moves beyond the well-worn clichés of “stepping down” to examine how senior leadership role changes impact individuals and the institutions they serve. Drawn from empirical research involving more than fifty college presidents, provosts, and deans, this book delivers fresh understanding of the challenges and opportunities leaders face as they assume a new place in the social architecture of their campus. Bridging the gap between theory and practice, Stepping Away translates research into practical strategies that leaders can use to make this change successfully, providing guidance about when to speak up and when to remain quiet, how to develop new relationships, where to office, whether to apply for new jobs, and how to use their knowledge and skills to add value to their campus communities, on-campus and off.

Book A Critical Discourse Analysis of Academic Presidential Transitions

Download or read book A Critical Discourse Analysis of Academic Presidential Transitions written by Tonia P. Ferrell and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Informed by critical discourse analysis, this purpose of this study was to examine presidential transitions in the U.S. Van Leeuwen's Social Actor Approach was used as the conceptual framework to understand how texts are used to recreate, shape and transform a social practice, such as college and university presidential leadership during times of transition.Data, covering presidential transitions in 2015 and 2016, were collected from The Chronicle of Higher Education. Data were analyzed using a three-phase analytic process that helped identify patterns and themes in the articles to uncover social actors (images) of college and university presidents in transition. The process also allowed for an analysis of the discursive structures at play, leading to findings of predominant discourses of professionalism, femininity, masculinity, and autonomy, giving rise to images of college and university presidents that remain traditional, masculine and at times heroic. Further, the intersection of discourses and images come together through our discussions to make visible discursive tensions between the president of yesteryear and the president of today/future. Implications and recommendations for practice are discussed.

Book Higher Education in Transition

Download or read book Higher Education in Transition written by Brian L. Fife and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1999-12-30 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the state of higher education at century's end and the challenges awaiting it in the next millennium. It assesses changes in the student population, the role of faculty, spending patterns, government support, the role of intercollegiate athletics, the nature of presidential leadership, and the impact of technological change. This volume is a call to educators, parents, and taxpayers alike to enter into a dialogue about the future directions of higher education that they are willing to support. Because in the last few decades higher education has attempted to extend both its reach and scope despite the finite nature of resources at its disposal, the new millennium will mark a time when colleges and universities must clearly delimit and prioritize their goals. This volume is a call to educators, parents, and taxpayers alike to enter into a dialogue about the future directions of higher education that they are willing to support. The role of higher education in a high-tech, interdependent world economy has never been more important than it is today. Yet, never before has its future been so cloudy. Changes in the nature of the student population, tuition increases that consistently outpace the cost of living, increasing conflict between faculty and administration personnel, attacks on tenure, the professionalization of collegiate sports, and political attacks and threats to state funding are all transforming an institution in ways that are, as yet, uncertain at best. This volume reviews the source and impact of change on today's colleges and universities. Leading scholars contribute chapters on specific aspects of collegiate life and the way internal and external forces are changing the scope and function of higher education.
