Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life, and Martyrdom of Abraham Lincoln, Sixteenth President of the United States; And Commander-in-Chief of the Army and Navy of the United States Yet in the case of Gladstone the prediction would not have been a wild one. His father was a man of large fortune who sat in Parliament for many years. The son would have the best school and university education which family position and wealth could procure. He would not need to earn a living, and could devote all his time and energy to public life. The parents of Abraham Lincoln, on the other hand, were poor pioneers, though no poorer than most of their neighbours. The father could barely read and write, the mother made her mark. The boy would grow to maturity on backwoods farms and would learn no more in the makeshift schools that the region offered than to read, write, and do simple arithmetic. After striking out on his own he would earn his living as a clerk in a frontier store, as village postmaster, and as a surveyor of the virgin lands that new settlers were then taking up. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Glimpse of the United States Military Telegraph Corps, and of Abraham Lincoln The golden dream of empire, which had haunted the waking and sleeping moments of the cultivated aristocratic ruling class of the Gulf States, and of the land barons of South Carolina and Georgia, aided and abetted by impracticable legislation and fanatical expressions of latitudinarian doctrines of government by agitators throughout the Northern States, had at last brought about that most deplorable of all conflicts - civil war. It was a serious hour for the principles of self-government by the people as represented by the Constitution of the great American Republic. Sumter had been fired upon, and the emblem of our nationality was lowered at the demand of revolting citizens. In this crisis, President Lincoln called upon the various States for 75,000 men to restore the authority of the National Government. Book Lincoln s Administration Classic Reprint

Download or read book Lincoln s Administration Classic Reprint written by Gideon Welles and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lincoln's Administration As he did in his earlier essays, Welles again emphasized his main thesis: the greatness of Abraham Lincoln. As the author put it, the Civil War President was in many respects a remark able man, never while living fully understood or appreciated. Determined to correct any remaining misconceptions about the Great Emancipator, the former Secretary of the Navy succeeded admirably i-n delineating his chief's political sagacity. How Lincoln rose to power, how he managed to maintain a middle course against opponents both within and outside of his party, and how he laid the foundations for a mild policy of restoration these are the high points of the essays. Since he sympathized with the President during the struggle over reconstruction, Welles sought to prove that Andrew Johnson was merely trying to carry out his predecessor's plans. To the author, it was clear that Johnson's antagonists had opposed Lincoln long before the end of the war. Consequently, Welles tended to stress the difficulties between Lincoln and the radicals, men whom he considered as dangerous as the Democratic opposition. Although his strictures upon the extremists were probably influenced by his difficulties with them during reconstruction, his views were widely accepted by historians in later years.
