He must use his new Energy abilities - abilities long thought the realm of magic by humanity - and his army of self-aware nanobots to save the life of a young woman named Elizabeth. Elizabeth is treated as if she is a slave, forced to endure all manner of human testing to find the method to unlock all human potential. It is treatment encouraged by a man named Arthur - her father - and it is her fondest wish that her father treat her as his beloved child rather than a piece of property. She refuses to leave until she's reformed him, for she believes that if he cannot change, she herself is predestined to be a monster, and a person not worthy of living. She'll fight to change Arthur, with Will's help, until she succeeds. Or until she's buried next to her mother, who sought the same reform - and was murdered for trying.

Tallamy’s first book, Bringing Nature Home, awakened thousands of readers to an urgent situation: wildlife populations are in decline because the native plants they depend on are fast disappearing. His solution? Plant more natives. In this new book, Tallamy takes the next step and outlines his vision for a grassroots approach to conservation. Nature’s Best Hope shows how homeowners everywhere can turn their yards into conservation corridors that provide wildlife habitats. Because this approach relies on the initiatives of private individuals, it is immune from the whims of government policy. Even more important, it’s practical, effective, and easy—you will walk away with specific suggestions you can incorporate into your own yard. If you’re concerned about doing something good for the environment, Nature’s Best Hope is the blueprint you need. By acting now, you can help preserve our precious wildlife—and the planet—for future generations.

Book excerpt: He's provided for each of them the opportunity to lead a life of health, wealth, and power far beyond their imagination. By his own example, he's shown them that such gifts are meant to be shared, used to make the world a better place. And he's never asked them for anything in return, showing a willingness to risk even his own life to live to his own ideals. Now Will Stark needs their help. He's helpless, he's uneducated, and he's about to meet men who can utterly destroy him. And they'll need to make sure that's exactly what happens. Prodded by memories and with the aid of future hindsight, they'll work tirelessly, take on alternate personalities, and ensure that the plan is carried out in its entirety. In the process, they'll learn that selfless sacrifice can demand a heavy price. They'll know that even high technology can't overcome the human spirit. And they'll understand that, even with perfect hindsight, surprises beyond expectation can -- and do -- occur.

Book Hope and the Longing for Utopia

Download or read book Hope and the Longing for Utopia written by Daniel Boscaljon and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2014-08-29 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At present the battle over who defines our future is being waged most publicly by secular and religious fundamentalists. Hope and the Longing for Utopia offers an alternative position, disclosing a conceptual path toward potential worlds that resist a limited view of human potential and the gift of religion. In addition to outlining the value of embracing unknown potentialities, these twelve interdisciplinary essays explore why it has become crucial that we commit to hoping for values that resist traditional ideological commitments. Contextualized by contemporary writing on utopia, and drawing from a wealth of times and cultures ranging from Calvin's Geneva to early twentieth-century Japanese children's stories to Hollywood cinema, these essays cumulatively disclose the fundamental importance of resisting tantalizing certainties while considering the importance of the unknown and unknowable. Beginning with a set of four essays outlining the importance of hope and utopia as diagnostic concepts, and following with four concrete examples, the collection ends with a set of essays that provide theological speculations on the need to embrace finitude and limitations in a world increasingly enframed by secularizing impulses. Overall, this book discloses how hope and utopia illuminate ways to think past simplified wishes for the future.

Book Step by step guide to preserving vegetables Fermenting pickling canning dehydrating and freezing your favorite products

Download or read book Step by step guide to preserving vegetables Fermenting pickling canning dehydrating and freezing your favorite products written by and published by jideon francisco marques. This book was released on 2024-04-02 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How to Use this Book This book is based on my desire to preserve vegetables in ways that my family will eat and do that as efficiently as possible. When possible, I preserve vegetables in a meal-ready way. Instead of canning a bunch of carrot slices in quart (1-L)-sized jars when I bring in a large carrot harvest, I’ll make a batch of Canned Spice Carrot Soup and a couple of jars of Fermented Mexican Carrots. Then, I’ll use the tops to make Frozen Carrot Top Pesto for the freezer. The carrot soup is the only time-consuming item; the other two can be put together while the soup is processing. The first part of this book is an overview of food preservation methods: canning, both water bath and pressure canning, dehydrating, fermenting and freezing. You’ll find the basics of how to use these methods to safely preserve vegetables, but you won’t find details for every scenario that could happen while preserving vegetables. I’ve written these chapters with enough information to get you started preserving the harvest, but not so much information that it leads to confusion and information overload. The rest of this book is focused on growing and preserving the most popular vegetables and herbs that are grown in the home garden. Each vegetable has its own chapter and, in that chapter, you’ll find instructions on how to grow, purchase, can, dehydrate, ferment and freeze that vegetable. You will also find recipes that highlight the vegetable; most of these recipes are for preserving the vegetable, but some recipes use the preserved vegetable. Most of the recipes are written so that you’ll preserve small batches at a time, simply because I find that adjusting recipes to scale up is easier than scaling down. If your family likes a recipe, or if you have enough of one vegetable to make two batches of a recipe, just double the ingredients and it will work out fine. The exception to this is any of the jam or jelly recipes; don’t ever double a jam or jelly recipe or you run the risk of it not setting up. I hope you read through the whole book to get a vision for how these different preservation methods can work together to stock your pantry with food your family will eat. Then, when a vegetable is in season, I hope you reread that vegetable’s chapter and make a plan for preserving all of the harvest in a variety of ways. Of course, I hope that some of our favorite preservation recipes become your family favorites, too.
