Book Sustainable Heritage

Download or read book Sustainable Heritage written by Amalia Leifeste and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-06-14 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together ecological-conservation theory and heritage-preservation theory and shows how these two realms have common purpose. Through theoretical discussion and illustrative examples, Sustainable Heritage reframes the history of multiple movements within preservation and sustainable-design strategies into cross-disciplinary themes. Through topics such as Cultural Relationships with Nature, Ecology, Biodiversity, Energy, and Resource Systems; Integrating Biodiversity into the Built Environment Rehabilitation Practice; Fixing the Shortcomings Within Community Design, Planning, and Policy; Strategies for Adapting Buildings and Structures for Rising Sea Levels; and Vehicles as a Microcosm of Approaching Built Environment Rehabilitation, the book explores contemporary ecological and heritage ethics as a strategy for improving the livability of the built environment. The authors provide a holistic critique of the challenges we face in light of climate and cultural changes occurring from the local to the global level. It synthesizes the best practices offered by separate disciplines as one cohesive way forward toward sustainable design. The authors consider strategies for increasing the physical and cultural longevity of the built environment, why these two are so closely paired, and the potential their overlap offers for sustained and meaningful inhabitation. Sustainable Heritage unites students and professionals in a wide range of disciplines with one common language and more closely aligned sets of objectives for preservation and sustainable design.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from From Ocean to Ocean: With Notes and Observations on the Way On the eleventh day of May, 1892, I found myself comfortably seated in a palace car, starting from the Grand Central depot in New York city. Our train consisted of nine palace cars, containing the commissioners and visitors to the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church to convene on the 19th of May in the First Presbyterian Church of Portland, Oregon. Nothing of particular interest occurred till we reached Chicago. There the train passed slowly by the fair grounds and we had a good view of the exhibition buildings now in process of erection for the display of the world's productions in all that pertains to the civilization and enlightenment of this last decade of the nineteenth century. From Chicago, we started on our way after some three hours delay, with twenty-seven palace cars, divided into three sections - first, second and third - each section of nine cars drawn by a powerful locomotive. We were in the second section. Col. Eliot Shepherd happened to be with us on his way to Omaha to deliver an address on "The Sabbath, or Fourth Commandment" before the Methodist Episcopal Conference in that city. Book The Land Across the Sea Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Land Across the Sea Classic Reprint written by Estelle Ryan Snyder and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-27 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Land Across the Sea Such a hustling and bustling preparing for the long jour ney. The hours fairly fly on wings. The days are woefully short in which to accomplish the thousand and one things which come up at the last moment. Friends and neighbors drop in to say bon voyage; a few tears are shed and we are finally on our way. Upon our arrival in the great metropolis of New York we take careful inventory of what will be needed on a sea voyage. It being our first crossing we are obliged to purchase a steamer trunk and steamer caps. We spend a very pleasant morning in the sheps making our purchases. In the afternoon we go to Hoboken to have a peep at the great ship that is to bear us across the water. We are like children in our eager anticipa tion, for remember it is our first view of a real ocean liner. Taking the subway to Hoboken we soon arrive at the pier where our vessel lies at anchor. Such a hurley-burley of noise and confusion of teams, teamsters and endless trucks of luggage. You would think the entire population of Greater New York was moving. Threading our way through an ever changing throng we arrive at the gangway, where we ask if we may go on board. Consent is courteously given. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Sea Wings, Ways, and Words: In the Days of Oak and Hemp It was in December, 1884, that I received the following kind words of encouragement from Mr. Ruskin, about some sketches and notes upon old ships, boats, sails, and rigging: - "My dear Leslie, I never saw anything half so delightful or useful as these compared sails so easily explained. Do set yourself at this with all your mind and time on this plan. It will be the most refreshing thing to me to take it up with you I could possibly have. Ever your grateful, J. Ruskin." Since then, I have been collecting material, and working in this same direction; and in 1887 I sent an illustrated article to Messrs. Harper Brothers, which appeared in the August number of their magazine for that year. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from From Sea to Sea, Vol. 2: And Other Sketches, Letter of Travel Get that girl to give back your gig-lamps, and you will be able to see more clearly into the soul of the Far East. The Far East hasn't got a soul. She swapped it for a Constitution on the Eleventh of February last. Can any Constitution make up for the wear ing of Europe clothes? I saw a Jap lady just now in full afternoon calling-kit. She looked atrocious. Have you seen the later Japanese art - the pictures on the fans and in the shop win dows? They are faithful reproductions of the changed life - telegraph poles down the streets, conventionalised tram-lines, top-hats, and carpet bags in the hands of the men. The artists can make those things almost passable, but when it comes to conventionalising a Europe dress, the effect is horrible. Japan wishes to take her place among civilised nations, said the Professor. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
