Book Preserving a Reformed Heritage

Download or read book Preserving a Reformed Heritage written by John W Keddie and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-02-20 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of the Free Church of Scotland in the 20th Century. It outlines the life and witness of the Church throughout the century dealing with some of the issues which faced the Church in that period. A companion volume entitled 'A Divided Church', provides an account of the division which occurred in the Free Church of Scotland in 2000, a division that led to the emergence of the Free Church of Scotland (Continuing). This is not an exhaustive history, nor is it an 'official' one. It is in the nature of 'Aspects of the History of the Free Church of Scotland in the 20th Century.' The Free Church itself reflected a confessional evangelical and reformed position throughout the century, though not without testing times, not least right at the end of the century.

Book Sanctification of the Sabbath

Download or read book Sanctification of the Sabbath written by Robert Haldane and published by Reformation Heritage Books. This book was released on 2021-12-17 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Haldane proves the Lord’s Day is a permanent obligation, afterward embodied in the Ten Commandments and recognized by Jesus and His apostles, and that the change of day does not void the fourth commandment. He sets forth how beautifully the Sabbath day depicts the patience, goodness, and mercy of Jehovah. Most divine institutions point out the consequences of sin, but the Sabbath traces its origin to the time when man walked in innocence in the immediate presence of the Lord. We are to remember an institution forgotten in the bondage of Egypt—to keep holy a day God claims as His inalienable property, a claim restated by Jesus Christ for us. Table of Contents: 1. The Sabbath Anterior to the Mosaic Dispensation 2. The Sabbath Binding Alike under the Jewish and Christian Dispensations 3. The Manner of the Promulgation of the Decalogue 4. The Manner of the Preservation of the Decalogue and the Lessons Thereby Taught 5. Proof of the Permanence of the Fourth Commandment Derived from the Foregoing Statements 6. Internal Evidence Shows that the Fourth Commandment Is of Universal Obligation 7. Objections to the Permanent Obligation of the Sabbath Considered 8. The Observance of the Sabbath under the Christian Dispensation Is Fully Recognized by the Prophets 9. The Change from the Last to the First Day of the Week Has Not Invalidated the Obligation of the Sabbath

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Heritage of the Reformation The publisher tells me that there is a steady demand for this book. First published in 1950, it has been out Of print for several years. For the new edition, I have thoroughly revised the whole volume and have added three new chapters. The longest of these deals with the ministry at the time Of the Reformation. It supplements happily the interpretation of the Reformation Offered in the several chapters Of the first section. The two Others treat the contribution to Protes tant thought by Harnack and Barth. These chapters also will be we] comed, I hope, by the readers of this volume. They will strengthen, I trust, my argument on behalf Of theological liberalism. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Reformed Systematic Theology Volume 3

Download or read book Reformed Systematic Theology Volume 3 written by Joel Beeke and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2021-12-01 with total page 1061 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Here is catechesis at its best, instructing the student of theology, providing pastors with a sermon-enriching manual, and giving growing Christians a resource book that will both inform and nourish them, as well as provide endless theological enjoyment!" — Sinclair B. Ferguson, Chancellor's Professor of Systematic Theology, Reformed Theological Seminary; Teaching Fellow, Ligonier Ministries The aim of systematic theology is to engage not only the head but also the heart and hands. Only recently has the church compartmentalized these aspects of life—separating the academic discipline of theology from the spiritual disciplines of faith and obedience. This multivolume work brings together rigorous historical and theological scholarship with spiritual disciplines and practical insights—characterized by a simple, accessible, comprehensive, Reformed, and experiential approach. In this volume, Joel R. Beeke and Paul M. Smalley unpack the work and role of the Holy Spirit (Pneumatology) and salvation (soteriology). The authors examine the Holy Spirit's role in the history of salvation, the order of salvation, and the believers' experience of salvation. As readers consider the interrelationship between the Spirit and salvation, they are invited to explore the direct activity of the Lord in their lives for their salvation.

Book Christian Worship in Reformed Churches Past and Present

Download or read book Christian Worship in Reformed Churches Past and Present written by Lukas Vischer and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2003 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Worship renewal is now on the agenda of many Reformed churches, as the need for adaptation and new approaches is acutely felt all over. How can the church faithfully worship God in the midst of rapidly changing situations? How can it constructively relate to widely differing cultural contexts? What is its place in the wider ecumenical scene? In preparing a sweeping survey of Reformed worship across time and place, this volume provides some help to those engaged with vital questions like these. Written by theologians and liturgical scholars from a wide range of churches and countries, these chapters explore the history of Reformed worship on every continent from the sixteenth century to the present. Surveying the most significant developments in the growth of Reformed worship, the book identifies the major "ingredients" that make the Reformed worship tradition distinctive and highlights those aspects of Reformed worship that are particularly relevant to present efforts at renewal. Indeed, an important component of this book is the inclusion of "A Common Reflection on Christian Worship in Reformed Churches Today," the result of a major consultation in January 2001 at the International Reformed Center John Knox. Revealing the rich variety of forms and diversity of perspectives that have made and do make up Reformed worship worldwide, this volume will be a valuable resource for church and worship leaders both in and outside the Reformed family. Book The Heritage Reformed Congregations Who We Are and What We Believe

Download or read book The Heritage Reformed Congregations Who We Are and What We Believe written by Joel R. Beeke and published by . This book was released on 2007-08-01 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cherishing the church as the universal bride of Christ in her invisible form goes hand in hand with valuing and being committed to the church's visible manifestation in terms of specific churches and denominations. Too often today, church members do not understand their own church and denomination, with the result that they do not love it enough. Then, too, denominations often do a poor job of communicating their beliefs, distinctive, and ministries to those who may be interested in knowing them, especially similar-minded churches around them. This booklet seeks to address this need for the relatively new Heritage Reformed Congregations by setting forth its goal and vision; origin and history; doctrinal standards and worship; biblical, doctrinal, experiential, practical, and ecclesiastical emphasis; and its denominational ministries. Our prayer is that this booklet will promote a deeper appreciation of and commitment to Christ's bride, as laid out in Scripture and envisioned by the Reformers, as she functions within the Heritage Reformed denomination. Author Joel R. Beeke (Ph.D. Westminster Theological Seminary) is president and professor of systematic theology and homiletics at Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, pastor of the Heritage Netherlands Reformed Congregation in Grand Rapids, Michigan, editor of The Banner of Sovereign Grace Truth, and author of numerous books.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Charles Ryle became the undisputed leader and spokesman of the evangelical party within the Church of England in the last half of the nineteenth century, and his works continue to be read by evangelicals of various denominational stripes more than a century after his death. Accordingly, he is often portrayed as "an old soldier" of a heroic cause. While this view of Ryle holds some merit, it often obscures the complexity and dynamism of a most remarkable man. In this intellectual biography, Bennett Wade Rogers analyzes the complicated life and times of a man variously described as traditional, moderate, and even radical during his fifty-eight-year ministry. Ryle began his ministerial career as a rural parish priest; he ended it as a bishop of the second city of the British Empire. In the time between, he became a popular preacher, influential author, effective controversialist, recognized party leader, stalwart church defender, and radical church reformer. Table of Contents: 1. Christian and Clergyman 2. Preacher 3. Pastor 4. Controversialist 5. A National Ministry 6. Bishop 7. Who Was J. C. Ryle?
