Download or read book Diplomacy with a Difference the Commonwealth Office of High Commissioner 1880 2006 written by Lorna Lloyd and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-05-30 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book illuminates two familiar phenomena – diplomacy and the Commonwealth – from a new and unfamiliar angle: the atypical way in which the Commonwealth’s members came to, and continue to, engage in official relations with each other. This innovative and wide-ranging study is based on archival material from four states, interviews and correspondence with diplomats, and a wide range of secondary sources. It shows how members of an empire found it necessary to engage in diplomacy and, in so doing, created a singular, and often remarkably intimate, diplomatic system. The result is a fascinating, multidisciplinary exploration of the evolving Commonwealth and the way in which its 53 members and Ireland conduct diplomacy with one another, and in so doing have contributed a distinctive terminology to the diplomatic lexicon.

Download or read book New Zealand s Vietnam War written by Ian McGibbon and published by Exisle Publishing. This book was released on 2014-06-18 with total page 706 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This landmark publication provides a comprehensive and authoritative account of New Zealand's involvement in the Vietnam War, and will remain the standard reference work on the subject for decades. Its publication completes the programme of official war histories that began in 1945. Ian McGibbon's primary focus is what New Zealand did in South Vietnam. He traces in detail the operations carried out by New Zealand forces and seeks to illuminate the experience of New Zealand soldiers fighting in a guerrilla war. The command structure, logistic support and operational context of fighting within a primarily Australian framework are all covered. He addresses controversial aspects such as friendly fire incidents, atrocity allegations and veterans' grievances, including over Agent Orange. Maori participation in V Force was substantial and its impact is assessed. Although the book is inevitably weighted towards the military, the efforts of civilians in South Vietnam are also covered in depth. The surgical team operated from 1963 until their evacuation from Qui Nhon just days before North Vietnamese columns entered the city. Not forgotten are the efforts of courageous civilians like Sister Mary Laurence and of Red Cross volunteers to alleviate misery among refugees. The book also describes the dramatic end of New Zealand's involvement in South Vietnam – with the surgical team and the New Zealand Embassy evacuated by RNZAF Bristol Freighters just before the communist victory. Finally, McGibbon surveys the war's troubled aftermath, culminating in the Prime Minister's apology to veterans in 2008.

Download or read book Katherine Mansfield and Periodical Culture written by Mourant Chris Mourant and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2019-04-10 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores Katherine Mansfield's engagement in the periodical culture of the early twentieth century This book considers Mansfield's ambivalent position as a colonial woman writer by examining her contributions to the political weekly The New Age, the avant-garde little magazine Rhythm and the literary journal The Athenaeum. Contextualising Mansfield's work against the editorial strategies and professional cultures of each periodical, the book deepens and complicates older critical assumptions about the trajectory of Mansfield's development as a writer. Key FeaturesProvides the first sustained scholarly examination of Mansfield's engagement with and relation to early twentieth-century periodical cultureForegrounds the original material contexts in which Mansfield produced the majority of her work, emphasising a dialogic or 'conversational' model for modernismInterrogates Mansfield's ambivalent self-positioning within English literary circles as a 'colonial-metropolitan modernist' and 'outsider'Integrates ideas of the recent 'transnational turn' across literary studies into the field of periodical scholarship

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating story of one man's impact on history (Sir Martin Gilbert, historian; Honorary Fellow of Merton College, University of Oxford). Vladimir Jabotinsky and Sioma Jacobi exchanged more than five hundred letters between 1920 and 1939. Yet Jabotinsky s right-hand man, who ran the London Revisionist bureau from 1934 until his premature death at the age of forty-two, and who nearly single-handedly managed illegal immigration to Palestine, is virtually unknown. This book resurrects the legacy of a remarkable man and awards Solomon Sioma Jacobi his rightful place in Zionist history.
