Download or read book The Museum of Found Objects Toronto Maharaja and written by Mirjam Linschooten and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Museum of Found Objects is a project initiated by artists Sameer Farooq (Canada) and Mirjam Linschooten (Netherlands/France). In response to the AGO exhibition Maharaja: The Splendour of India's Royal Courts, The Museum of Found Objects proposes to create an archive of everyday objects fueled by Toronto's South Asian neighbourhoods. A direct line will be drawn between historic objects and present-day objects, cleverly updating the AGO's Maharaja exhibition. Toronto-based artist, Sameer Farooq and his Paris, France-based collaborator, Mirjam Linschooten apply the strict methodologies of a museum - collecting, preparing, interpreting and displaying - to a selection of objects collected from neighbourhoods such as Brampton, Mississauga, Scarborough and Milton. The work challenges a museological portrayal of "culture" by introducing non-precious, surprising, and mundane objects into a place of importance. The Museum of Found Objects was first developed in Istanbul, as a commission from the Turkish Ministry of Culture during the Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture. This artists' book continues the exhibition's museological approach, with a collection of catalogue-style photographs, which are accompanied by the humourous and subjective captions that were used in the exhibition. A series of notes, written by Haema Sivanesan, offers insight into the way The Museum of Found Objects critiques and challenges the museum's authorial role in defining culture, while also reflecting upon ideas about the urban South Asian consumer.
Download or read book Fred Herzog written by Fred Herzog and published by Douglas & McIntyre. This book was released on 2011 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fred Herzog's bold use of colour in the 1950s and 60s set him apart at a time when the only art photography taken seriously was in black and white. His early use of color make him a forerunner of "New Colour" photographers such as Stephen Shore and William Eggleston, who received widespread acclaim in the 1970s. Herzog images were all taken on Kodachrome, a slide film with a sharpness and tonal range that, until recently, could not be reproduced in prints, and his choice of medium limited his exhibition opportunities. However, recent advances in digital technology have made high-quality prints of his work possible, and in the past few years his substantial and influential body of work has been available to a wider audience. Fred Herzog: Photographs showcases this innovative artist's impressive oeuvre in a beautifully crafted volume of early color and urban street photography. Providing authoritative texts are four titans of the art community: Jeff Wall anchors Herzog's place in the history of photography, Claudia Gochmann sets his work in an international context and Sarah Milroy and Douglas Coupland provide additional commentary.

Download or read book Isamu Noguchi written by Valerie J. Fletcher and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "One of the most versatile artists of the modern era, Isamu Noguchi explored many areas of art and design. Both Isamu Noguchi: Master Sculptor and the exhibition of the same name, which this book accompanies, focus on his sculpture as the nexus of his creativity. From the late 1920s through the mid-1980s, Noguchi changed direction frequently and delighted in exploring diametrically opposed ideas and styles. In her essay, Valerie J. Fletcher examines Noguchi's use of many different materials and explores the reasons underlying his diverse practice. Situating his sculptures within their historical and art-historical contexts, Dr. Fletcher seeks to dispel the previous limited interpretation of Isamu Noguchi as a Japanese American artist, instead redefining him as one of the first truly global artists of the modern era. Noguchi worked in modes inspired by many cultural sources - he became familiar with utopian ideals while working in Paris, studied traditional calligraphic drawing in Beijing, and learned to model clay sculptures in Kyoto. During World War II, the rise of anti-Japanese sentiment precipitated a period of seclusion and introspection. He adopted some of the principles of Surrealism and created the remarkable Lunars, which have rarely been seen, followed by his delicate, interlocking compositions in slabs of slate and marble. After the war Noguchi again traveled around the world, finding inspiration in monuments of all kinds, ranging from Stonehenge in England to Hindu architecture in India. From the 1960s onward, Noguchi maintained studios in the United States and in Japan, while also working on garden environments and urban monuments in many cities. In his late sculptural works he achieved subtle and sophisticated syntheses of nature with artifice, the organic with the geometric, intuition with intellect. His sculptures express his passionate conviction that art can enrich ordinary lives and transcend national, religious, and ethnic barriers." --
