Book Prescription Drug Diversion and Pain

Download or read book Prescription Drug Diversion and Pain written by John F. Peppin and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-08-01 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prescription Drug Diversion and Pain provides an interdisciplinary overview of medications used to treat chronic pain, specifically the benefits and risks that are posed by long-term opioids use. These essential pain-relieving medications must be carefully managed to prevent serious side effects that may include physical dependence, addiction, and even death, which has led in recent years to increased attention on the development of alternative treatments for chronic pain. This book not only offers a single, comprehensive source for understanding the specialized field of the opioid crisis, but also addresses provocative topics including how pain drugs came to be regulated by the U.S. Government and the rarely-discussed aggressive marketing behind the spread of these drugs. Chapters are written by expert contributors from diverse backgrounds in medicine, psychiatry, pharmacy, nursing, health law, and ethics. Prescription Drug Diversion and Pain is a must-read for healthcare professionals, caregivers, policy makers, regulatory officials, law enforcement, and those in the pharmaceutical industry seeking to address the current and future opioid crisis.

Book Medications for Opioid Use Disorder Save Lives

Download or read book Medications for Opioid Use Disorder Save Lives written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2019-06-16 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The opioid crisis in the United States has come about because of excessive use of these drugs for both legal and illicit purposes and unprecedented levels of consequent opioid use disorder (OUD). More than 2 million people in the United States are estimated to have OUD, which is caused by prolonged use of prescription opioids, heroin, or other illicit opioids. OUD is a life-threatening condition associated with a 20-fold greater risk of early death due to overdose, infectious diseases, trauma, and suicide. Mortality related to OUD continues to escalate as this public health crisis gathers momentum across the country, with opioid overdoses killing more than 47,000 people in 2017 in the United States. Efforts to date have made no real headway in stemming this crisis, in large part because tools that already existâ€"like evidence-based medicationsâ€"are not being deployed to maximum impact. To support the dissemination of accurate patient-focused information about treatments for addiction, and to help provide scientific solutions to the current opioid crisis, this report studies the evidence base on medication assisted treatment (MAT) for OUD. It examines available evidence on the range of parameters and circumstances in which MAT can be effectively delivered and identifies additional research needed.

Book Pain Management and the Opioid Epidemic

Download or read book Pain Management and the Opioid Epidemic written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2017-09-28 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drug overdose, driven largely by overdose related to the use of opioids, is now the leading cause of unintentional injury death in the United States. The ongoing opioid crisis lies at the intersection of two public health challenges: reducing the burden of suffering from pain and containing the rising toll of the harms that can arise from the use of opioid medications. Chronic pain and opioid use disorder both represent complex human conditions affecting millions of Americans and causing untold disability and loss of function. In the context of the growing opioid problem, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) launched an Opioids Action Plan in early 2016. As part of this plan, the FDA asked the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to convene a committee to update the state of the science on pain research, care, and education and to identify actions the FDA and others can take to respond to the opioid epidemic, with a particular focus on informing FDA's development of a formal method for incorporating individual and societal considerations into its risk-benefit framework for opioid approval and monitoring.

Book Federal Regulation of Methadone Treatment

Download or read book Federal Regulation of Methadone Treatment written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1995-02-18 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For nearly three decades, methadone hydrochloride has been the primary means of treating opiate addiction. Today, about 115,000 people receive such treatment, and thousands more have benefited from it in the past. Even though methadone's effectiveness has been well established, its use remains controversial, a fact reflected by the extensive regulation of its manufacturing, labeling, distribution, and use. The Food and Drug Administration regulates the safety and effectiveness of methadone, as it does for all drugs, and the Drug Enforcement Administration regulates it as a controlled substance. However, methadone is also subjected to a unique additional tier of regulation that prescribes how and under what circumstances it may be used to treat opiate addiction. Federal Regulation of Methadone Treatment examines current Department of Health and Human Services standards for narcotic addiction treatment and the regulation of methadone treatment programs pursuant to those standards. The book includes an evaluation of the effect of federal regulations on the provision of methadone treatment services and an exploration of options for modifying the regulations to allow optimal clinical practice. The volume also includes an assessment of alternatives to the existing regulations.

Book Overcoming Prescription Drug Addiction

Download or read book Overcoming Prescription Drug Addiction written by Rod Colvin and published by Addicus Books. This book was released on 2008-06-01 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DIVDIV Prescription drug addiction is now one of the nation's most serious drug problems. More Americans are abusing controlled prescription drugs more than cocaine, hallucinogens, inhalants, and heroin combined. With the exception of marijuana, prescription painkillers are the most widely abused drug in the U.S. Many who are addicted to prescription drugs are &“unwitting addicts&”—they have no history of drug abuse, but become addicted after taking a drug for legitimate reasons. Rod Colvin understands this problem. His 35-year old brother died as a result of his long-term addiction to painkillers and tranquilizers. Drawing from his personal experience and his background as a counselor, Colvin offers help to those suffering from addiction as well as their families. In this new, third edition, Colvin discusses dynamics of addiction and the newest treatment options; he also offers compelling personal stories from addicts who describe their journeys into recovery. These anecdotes are accompanied by advice from addiction medicine specialists. The Book Answers These Questions: &· How does addiction &“rewire&” the brain? &· What are the symptoms of addiction? &· Who's at risk for addiction? &· Why are more teens abusing prescription drugs? &· When does proper medical use of a drug turn into addiction? &· What happens if the drugs are stopped abruptly? &· What are the symptoms of withdrawal? &· What is the difference between addiction and physical dependence? &· What are the top 20 most-abused prescription drugs? STRONGHow Can You Leave Prescription Drugs Behind? Read stories of recovery from individuals who are in recovery &· Learn how they become addicted &· Find out how they made it into recovery &· What were the turning points in their lives that made them seek recovery?

Book The Profits and Losses of Prescription Drug Diversion

Download or read book The Profits and Losses of Prescription Drug Diversion written by Chavonne D. Slade and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prescription drug diversion effects society in a myriad ways. Comparisons were made to the relationship between the profits that the pharmaceutical companies have made due to the increasing demand of illegally obtained prescription drugs and the losses that Medicaid and Medicare part D have experienced as a result of rampant drug diversion. Public healthcare benefits are being used in many prescription drug diversion schemes. The misuse of Medicaid and Medicare benefits leads to federal and state funding being wasted. The Drug Enforcement Administration revealed that over $70 billion a year was paid by public and private medical insurers for controlled prescription drug diversion and abuse. There is a correlation between Medicaid and Medicare part D expenditures and prescription drug diversion. The results of this study indicate that as the pharmaceutical companies revenues reached billions of dollars, Medicaid and Medicare part D prescription drug expenditures did as well. The study also indicates that as the pharmaceutical companies' profits increase, so does the rate of diversion. There were some limitations to the research due to some pharmaceutical profit information being unattainable. Medicare part D and Medicaid expenditures are public knowledge. Further research is needed so that an accurate comparison of profits and losses of prescription drug diversion can be conducted.
