It was shown that the use of the standard twelve-year prepayment assumption resulted in a misstatement of yields on most securities. Despite the fact taht published yields indicated that there were significant variations among securities with different coupons, it was shown that a correction for prepayment assumptions would make yields converge. One hypothesis had been that the correction for prepayment assumptions would bring yields on GNMA securities, which are backed by the full faith and credit of the U.S. Treasury, into the range of yields on U.S. Treasury securities. This, however, was not the case, for even after the correction was made, yields on GNMAs were higher than Treasury yields. This phenomenon was examined and several possible causes were discussed. Applications of findings to the market were explored. In particular, it was pointed out that the Chicago Board of Trade has institutionalized the twelve-year prepayment assumption for trading in GNMA futures. In cases where delivery occurred, this would result in the delivery of an inferior GNMA. Market strategies for trading in GNMAs were also discussed. It was suggested that under certain circumstances it would be better to purchase one coupon GNMA rather than another.

Book excerpt: This paper shows that banks use accounting discretion to overstate the value of distressed assets. Banks' balance sheets overvalue real estate-related assets compared to the market value of these assets, especially during the U.S. mortgage crisis. Share prices of banks with large exposure to mortgage-backed securities also react favorably to recent changes in accounting rules that relax fair-value accounting, and these banks provision less for bad loans. Furthermore, distressed banks use discretion in the classification of mortgage-backed securities to inflate their books. Our results indicate that banks' balance sheets offer a distorted view of the financial health of the banks.
