Crises happen and they are often out of our control. But the one thing we can control is how we respond to them. Yet, our natural instincts often hinder us as we confront today’s crises that are complex, amorphous, and not readily solvable. Changing our reaction to a crisis is an immense challenge, yet with powerful lessons provided in these pages, anyone can turn crises into opportunities for reflection, positive action, and growth. . A crisis mentality can overwhelm you when bad things happen. Exploring the essential psychological, emotional, and interpersonal factors that most impact your reaction to a crisis, Jim Taylor provides you with deep insights and practical tools that help you move from a crisis mentality of fear, pessimism, and panic that controls you to an opportunity mindset of calm, confidence, and courage that you control in a crisis. Loaded with Case Studies! How leaders deal with crisis can clarify character and strengthen reputation. On the other hand, the wrong words and actions from the C-Suite can worsen the crisis spiral. Crisis management does not begin on the day the fire erupts, the hurricane barrels through, or the accident happens. Book Collaborative Crisis Management

Download or read book Collaborative Crisis Management written by Thomas A. Cole and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2022-09-12 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two experienced corporate crisis advisors offer a thorough and approachable guide to successful crisis management from anticipation to resolution. All organizations face crises from time to time, and at a time when news, information (or misinformation), and rumors can spread quickly, a timely and thoughtful response to a crisis, is critical. In this book, two industry insiders offer a primer on how organizational leadership should prepare for and handle crises. The steps, plans, and cautions they offer show how organizations can deal openly and honestly with challenges while continuing to survive and prosper. Thomas A. Cole and Paul Verbinnen show how successful crisis management requires a multi-disciplined approach enacted collaboratively under strong leadership. Drawing on many real-world examples, they speak to not only what to do during a crisis, but also the need for preparedness and post-crisis follow-up. The book is organized around a broad range of discrete issues that need to be addressed in managing any crisis and provides the steps required to successfully address each of those issues. The authors urge crisis managers to focus attention equally on four phases of management: prepare, execute, recover, and then repeat (after reflecting on the results of the last crisis) with the next one. The emphasis is on preparation and planning, setting up the procedures, and organizing the teams that will respond to each crisis. Unlike other crisis books that focus solely on communication, Collaborative Crisis Management goes further and in addition to communication, it discusses both the legal obligations and organizational challenges that accompany a crisis. The result is an indispensable guide for leaders, board members, and business students.

Book excerpt: When you're properly prepared, your "worst-case scenario" is better than most people's. But there are two crucial possibilities you MUST be ready for... Gone are the days when disaster preparedness was a preoccupation of the paranoid few. Now, it's a genuine concern of the many - and you only have to look to the headlines to see why. Extreme weather events, global pandemics, growing unrest... It makes sense to prepare for the worst - yet most of us aren't. Even if you've become a master at growing your own food and stockpiling for an emergency, you probably haven't covered all your bases. Only a quarter of US citizens have a go bag ready for an emergency, and a very small number have considered what they'll do if they're suddenly without power. If the power grid fails, it's not just your lights that go out. It's your water supply. It's your heating and cooling system. It's all your usual ways of cooking food or doing the laundry. And if you need to leave your home in an emergency, that abundant stockpile will be of very little use to you. There are two crucial things your emergency plan must include for your family to thrive if the worst happens: ● A top-tier bug-out plan ● Certainty of survival if the grid goes down And that requires much more than a well-kitted bug-out bag and a portable stove. If disaster strikes, you must know EXACTLY what to do - and how. This essential 2-in-1 collection is everything you need to ensure your plan is complete. Inside, you'll discover: ● Immediate short-term solutions to see you through the first few days of disaster ● A full range of emergency backups you can fall back on if you're currently totally reliant on the grid ● What to do when cash means nothing - creative ways to make sure your family thrives ● The ultimate guide to making sure your family always has access to clean, safe water ● Exactly what you can do to stay healthy when the toilet doesn't flush, the washing machine's useless, and a long hot bath is out of the question ● Everything you need to know about communicating with the outside world in a grid-down emergency ● How to recognize the signs that evacuation is your best option... and why bugging in is sometimes the better call ● How to choose the perfect bug-out location for your family (including the #1 mistake most people make when selecting their spot) ● Your guide to building the ultimate bug-out bag - with everything you need to sustain your survival ● Everything you need to know about route planning and transportation in an emergency ● Practical activities, easy DIY projects, essential skills, and top training tips to ensure the whole family is prepared for the worst And much more. If you're not convinced that your family needs a bug-out plan or you can't imagine life without the grid, all you need to do is look at the rising number of natural disasters creeping up across the globe... Book Before Crisis Hits

Download or read book Before Crisis Hits written by Larry L. Smith and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2002 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guide offers suggestions to college administrators for dealing with a variety of emergency or crisis situations that could affect a community college's effectiveness. The authors used the Institute for Crisis Management's (ICM) four types of crises in higher education as the framework for the guide. The four types of crises are: (1) sudden; (2) bizarre; (3) perceptual; and (4) smoldering. The sudden crisis, for which administrators can prepare, includes incidents such as fire, explosions, natural disasters, violence, and terrorist attacks. The bizarre crisis is impossible to prepare for--the guide offers the example of a student who was crushed between two elevators while riding on the roof of the elevator for sport. The perceptual crisis is also difficult to anticipate. The authors cite the example of the small college fighting the perception that because they are small they cannot offer a good education. Finally, the smoldering crisis is the most common and is characterized by a situation that starts out small and internal, but grows and becomes a crisis. Some crises, such as academic scandals or anonymous accusations, can be either sudden or smoldering, depending upon the chain of events involved in the crisis. This book concludes with examples of emergency plans. (Contains 64 references.) (NB).

Book How to Avoid a Climate Disaster

Download or read book How to Avoid a Climate Disaster written by Bill Gates and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2021-02-16 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER • In this urgent, authoritative book, Bill Gates sets out a wide-ranging, practical—and accessible—plan for how the world can get to zero greenhouse gas emissions in time to avoid a climate catastrophe. Bill Gates has spent a decade investigating the causes and effects of climate change. With the help of experts in the fields of physics, chemistry, biology, engineering, political science, and finance, he has focused on what must be done in order to stop the planet's slide to certain environmental disaster. In this book, he not only explains why we need to work toward net-zero emissions of greenhouse gases, but also details what we need to do to achieve this profoundly important goal. He gives us a clear-eyed description of the challenges we face. Drawing on his understanding of innovation and what it takes to get new ideas into the market, he describes the areas in which technology is already helping to reduce emissions, where and how the current technology can be made to function more effectively, where breakthrough technologies are needed, and who is working on these essential innovations. Finally, he lays out a concrete, practical plan for achieving the goal of zero emissions—suggesting not only policies that governments should adopt, but what we as individuals can do to keep our government, our employers, and ourselves accountable in this crucial enterprise. As Bill Gates makes clear, achieving zero emissions will not be simple or easy to do, but if we follow the plan he sets out here, it is a goal firmly within our reach.
