Download or read book Preliminary Water quality Evaluation of a Lower Pool Elevation for Proposed LaFarge Lake Wisconsin written by Dennis E. Ford and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The water quality of the proposed LaFarge Lake, Wisconsin, was investigated for a lower pool elevation (250.5 m MSL) using a version of the reservoir portion of the Water Quality for River-Reservoir Systems (WQRRS) ecological model. As in a previous study at a higher elevation (256 m MSL), the effort concentrated on temperature, dissolved oxygen, and algae. All model coefficients from the previous study were retained with the exception of Secchi disk depth, which was reduced from 3 to 2 m to account for probable increased turbidity at the lower pool elevation. The simulations indicated that LaFarge Lake would be a dynamic impoundment at the lower pool elevation. Temperature stratification was weak and intermittent. Dissolved oxygen was distributed throughout the pool during periods of complete mixing and was rapidly depleted in the hypolimnion during periods of stratification. A bloom of diatoms and green algae during the spring and at least two major blooms of blue-green algae during summer and fall were predicted. The phasing of these blooms was similar to that found at the higher elevation, but the two blue-green algae blooms increased in magnitude at the lower pool level. Coliforms were found to persist longer and to be distributed throughout more of the pool at the lower elevation. The phosphorus loadings at the lower pool elevation were approximately twice as large, but since the flushing rate was increased approximately three times, the eutrophication potentials of the two pool levels, based on Vollenweider's loading curves, were similar. It was not possible to meet downstream temperature objectives for a cold-water fishery. (Author).

Download or read book Water Quality Evaluation of Proposed Trexler Lake Jordan Creek Pennsylvania written by Dennis E. Ford and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The water quality of proposed Trexler Lake, Pennsylvania, was evaluated with respect to its eutrophication potential and water quality criteria and standards appropriate for project purposes. Study approaches included review of existing water quality data taken on the four tributaries to the proposed project; review of existing data on surrounding impoundments; algal bioassay analyses on water samples taken in the proposed tributaries and in one surrounding lake; mathematical simulation; and nutrient loading analyses. Algal bioassays were conducted on water samples taken in Mill, Lyon, Switzer, and Jordan creeks and in Beltzville Lake. All samples were phosphorus limited, and all of the orthophosphate was available for algal growth. The proposed Trexler Lake is expected to be in the mesotrophic or early eutrophic stage and exhibit strong thermal stratification during the summer months with a 1-month period of hypolimnetic anoxia during the fall. The project purposes are not expected to be vitiated by water quality although the lake is expected to be anoxic for a short time during late summer. Appendix A describes the algal assay procedures. Appendix B discusses the Hydrocomp simulation of Jordan Creek drainage basin. Appendix C presents the initial conditions, coefficients, and updates for mathematical ecological simulations. Appendix D lists the coefficient references.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water is vital to life, maintenance of ecological balance, economic development, and sustenance of civilization. Planning and management of water resources and its optimal use are a matter of urgency for most countries of the world, and even more so for India with a huge population. Growing population and expanding economic activities exert increasing demands on water for varied needs--domestic, industrial, agricultural, power generation, navigation, recreation, etc. In India, agriculture is the highest user of water. The past three decades have witnessed numerous advances as well as have presented intriguing challenges and exciting opportunities in hydrology and water resources. Compounding them has been the growing environmental consciousness. Nowhere are these challenges more apparent than in India. As we approach the twenty first century, it is entirely fitting to take stock of what has been accomplished and what remains to be accomplished, and what accomplishments are relevant, with particular reference to Indian conditions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Among the crucial problems that confront mankind today are those associated with a degraded environment. This book examines the extent to which warfare and other military activities contribute to such degradation. The military capability to damage the environment and to cause ecological disruption has escalated, and there is no sign that the level of conflict in the world is decreasing. The military use and abuse of each of the several major global habitats -- temperate, tropical, desert, arctic, insular, and oceanic -- are evalusated separately in the light of the civil use and abuse of that habitat"--Dust jacket.

Download or read book Guidelines for Evaluating and Expressing the Uncertainty of NIST Measurement Results rev Ed written by Barry N. Taylor and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2009-11 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results of measurements and conclusions derived from them constitute much of the technical information produced by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). In July 1992 the Director of NIST appointed an Ad Hoc Committee on Uncertainty Statements and charged it with recommending a policy on this important topic. The Committee concluded that the CIPM approach could be used to provide quantitative expression of measurement that would satisfy NIST¿s customers¿ requirements. NIST initially published a Technical Note on this issue in Jan. 1993. This 1994 edition addresses the most important questions raised by recipients concerning some of the points it addressed and some it did not. Illustrations.
