This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prepared by the Committee on Ports and Harbors Lifelines of the Technical Council on Lifeline Earthquake Engineering of ASCE. Hyogo-Ken Nanbu Earthquake of January 17, 1995: A Post-Earthquake Reconnaissance of Port Facilities describesØthe seismic performance of ports in the Osaka Bay region of Japan following the Hyogo-Ken Nanbu earthquake. A team of investigators observed and evaluated the seismic performance of the port facilities and then held numerous data-gathering meetings with representatives from relevant port authorities, engineering consulting firms, construction companies, universities, and private research organizations in Japan. The investigation was carried out over a 10-day period (February 18-27, 1995) and focused primarily on the Port of Kobe, the Port of Osaka and, to a lesser degree, the Kansai Airport. This first-hand documentation of perishable data will enhance future engineering and research work at these and other ports around the world.

Download or read book Post Earthquake Rehabilitation and Reconstruction written by F.Y. Cheng and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1996-10-14 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Damage assessment, rehabilitation, decision-making, social consequences, repair and reconstruction; these are all critical factors for considerations following natural disasters such as earthquakes. In order to address these issues, the United States of America and the Peoples Republic of China regularly organize bilateral symposia/workshops to investigate multiple hazard mitigation, particularly with respect to earthquake engineering. This book contains state-of-the-art reports presented by world-renowned researchers at the US/PRC Sympsosium Workshop on Post-Earthquake Rehabilitation and Reconstruction held in Kunming, Yunnan, China, May 1995. The following key areas are addressed: damage assessment of structures after earthquakes; lessons of post-earthquake recovery, rehabilitation and reconstruction, including public policy, land use options, urban planning, and design; issues in and examples of decision-making, and implementation of rehabilitation and reconstruction plans and policies; repair, strengthening, retrofit and control of structures and lifeline systems, post-earthquake socio-economic problems covering issues of relief and recovery; human and organizational behavior during emergency response, and strategies for improvement; real-time monitoring of earthquake response and damage.
Download or read book Geotechnical Reconnaissance of the Effects of the January 17 1995 Hyogoken Nanbu Earthquake Japan written by Koichi Akai and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 1997 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Jan. 17, 1995, Hyogoken-Nanbu Earthquake was one of the worst disasters to hit Japan in almost half a century. It has been compared in its impact to the great Kanto (Tokyo) Earthquake of 1923. The Kobe-Osaka region held many similarities in its geologic and tectonic setting to many areas along the West Coast, and possibly, other areas of the U.S. A geotechnical reconnaissance to identify the relevant problems and issues was organized. This report provides a timely, first-hand overview of the type and extent of the geotechnical aspects of the damage.

Download or read book Reconstructing Kobe written by David W. Edgington and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hanshin Earthquake was the largest disaster to affect postwar Japan and one of the most destructive postwar natural disasters to strike a developed country. Although the media focused on the disaster's immediate effects, the long-term reconstruction efforts have gone largely unexplored. Drawing on extensive fieldwork, David Edgington records the first ten years of reconstruction and recovery and asks whether planners successfully exploited opportunities to make a more sustainable and disaster-proof city. This book is an intricate investigation of one of the largest redevelopment projects in recent memory.

Download or read book Structural Engineering Mechanics and Computation written by A. Zingoni and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2001-03-16 with total page 1704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following on from the International Conference on Structural Engineering, Mechanics and Computation, held in Cape Town in April 2001, this book contains the Proceedings, in two volumes. There are over 170 papers written by Authors from around 40 countries worldwide. The contributions include 6 Keynote Papers and 12 Special Invited Papers. In line with the aims of the SEMC 2001 International Conference, and as may be seen from the List of Contents, the papers cover a wide range of topics under a variety of themes. There is a healthy balance between papers of a theoretical nature, concerned with various aspects of structural mechanics and computational issues, and those of a more practical nature, addressing issues of design, safety and construction. As the contributions in these Proceedings show, new and more efficient methods of structural analysis and numerical computation are being explored all the time, while exciting structural materials such as glass have recently come onto the scene. Research interest in the repair and rehabilitation of existing infrastructure continues to grow, particularly in Europe and North America, while the challenges to protect human life and property against the effects of fire, earthquakes and other hazards are being addressed through the development of more appropriate design methods for buildings, bridges and other engineering structures.
Download or read book Earthquake Proof Design and Active Faults written by Y. Kanaori and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1997-04-02 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 17th January 1995 an inland earthquake of 7.2 magnitude occurred under Kobe city in central Japan. More than 5,500 people lost their lives. There was immense and serious damage to buildings. Researchers and engineers were shocked and astonished by the extent of the devastation and loss of life. Ground motions, generated by the event were far greater than the seismic standard for earthquake-proof designs in Japan. Recent academic progress in the fields of geology and geophysics, which would help to reduce the severity of seismic disasters, has not been sufficiently applied to the development of earthquake-proof designs. This book contains 13 original and innovative papersof interdisciplinary study spanning earthquake-proof technology and active fault science (seven of the papers cover topics concerning the 1995 Kobe earthquake).
