The designs incorporated an effective diffusion angle of approximately 30 degrees and an area ratio of 3. Included were: (1) a 30 degree faired diffuser with four variations of screens and vanes, (2) a diffuser in which the longitudinal velocity distribution is a step function and which utilizes suction early in the diffusion process, and (3) a vortex-trap design using flow injection near the throat and suction at the diffuser exit. For comparison, a 10 degree faired diffuser was also treated.

Book excerpt: Velocity profile control tests were conducted with a short annular diffuser equipped with wall bleed capability. The diffuser area ratio was 4, and the length to inlet height ratio was 1. 5. Results show that the diffuser radial exit velocity profile may be shifted towards either the inner or outer diffuser wall by, respectively, bleeding off a small fraction of the total flow through the inner or outer wall. Based on these results, application of the diffuser bleed technique to a gas turbine combustor should be considered. The advantages of such a combustor could be shorter length, reduced idle exhaust emissions, and improved altitude relight capability.

Book excerpt: An investigation has been initiated to study methods for improving the pressure-recovery characteristics of two-dimensional, variable-geometry, supersonic-subsonic diffuser systems. The recovery characteristics of the basic configuration and of a configuration with an injector at the end of the supersonic diffuser have been determined at Mach numbers from 2.5 to 4.75, and at stagnation pressures from 40 to 205 pounds per square inch absolute. The Reynolds number based on the height of the test section and a stagnation pressure of 120 pounds per square inch absolute varied from 12,200,000 to 4,000,000 over the Mach number range from 2.5 to 4.75.
