Book 3D Hydrodynamic Temperature and Water Quality Numerical Model for Surface Waterbodies

Download or read book 3D Hydrodynamic Temperature and Water Quality Numerical Model for Surface Waterbodies written by and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerical modeling has become a major tool for managing water quality in surface waterbodies such as rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and estuaries. Since the two-dimensional longitudinal/vertical model CE-QUAL-W2 is a well-known model and it has been applied to thousands of waterbodies around the world successfully, its numerical scheme was adapted to develop a new three-dimensional numerical model for simulating hydrodynamics, temperature, and water quality in surface waterbodies.

Book A Review of Numerical Reservoir Hydrodynamic Modeling

Download or read book A Review of Numerical Reservoir Hydrodynamic Modeling written by Billy H. Johnson and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stratification, i.e., density variations in a reservoir, occurs due to temperature variations as a result of surface heat exchange and plays an important role in determining the water quality of a reservoir. This role is determined through the influence of density variations on the movement of water in the reservoir. Therefore, the primary objective of a prediction of stratified flow hydrodynamics in reservoirs is to enable scientists to compute temperature distributions and water transports insofar as they affect various water quality parameters. One objective of the Environmental & Water Quality Operational Study (EWQOS) program of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is to provide District and Division offices with a tool for predicting reservoir hydrodynamics over periods of time extending from the initial setup of thermal stratification in the spring through its breakup in the fall. Such a predictive technique will subsequently be used in the prediction of water quality parameters. Both two- and three-dimensional, unsteady, variable density, heat-conducting models have been investigated during the past year. This investigation has centered around an analysis of both the mathematical and numerical bases of individual models as well as their ability to simulate a density underflow.

Book A Unique Volume Balance Approach for Verifying the Three Dimensional Hydrodynamic Numerical Models in Surface Waterbody Simulation

Download or read book A Unique Volume Balance Approach for Verifying the Three Dimensional Hydrodynamic Numerical Models in Surface Waterbody Simulation written by Hussein A. M. Al-Zubaidi and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hydrodynamic numerical modeling is increasingly becoming a widely used tool for simulating the surface waterbodies including rivers, lakes, and reservoirs. A challenging step in any model development is the verification tests, especially at the early stage of development. In this study, a unique approach was developed by implementing the volume balance principle in order to verify the three-dimensional hydrodynamic models for surface waterbody simulation. A developed and verified three-dimensional hydrodynamic and water quality model, called W3, was employed by setting a case study model to be verified using the volume balance technique. The model was qualified by calculating the error in the accumulated water volume within the domain every time step. Results showed that the volume balance reached a constant error over the simulation period, indicating a robust model setup.

Book MAC3D Numerical Model for Reservoir Hydrodynamics with Application to Bubble Diffusers

Download or read book MAC3D Numerical Model for Reservoir Hydrodynamics with Application to Bubble Diffusers written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The MAC3D numerical model, a three dimensional flow solver initially developed for reservoir hydrodynamics, has been extended to account for the flow and gas transfer induced by bubble plumes. The latter are represented as buoyant columns in which dissolved gas is transferred to or from surrounding water. The local transfer rate is proportional to the dissolved gas concentration, and the resulting flow and gas transport are computed by solving discrete equations for the conservation of mass and momentum. The upward force imposed by a bubble column is directly proportional to the airflow rate through the associated bubble diffuser, and inversely proportional to the local depth and the bubble rise velocity. Gas transfer coefficients are empirical quantities that have to be inferred from laboratory experiments, but eddy viscosity and diffusivity are obtained directly from a k-E turbulence model. In the numerical solution of the governing equations, the explicit MacCormack scheme has been replaced by an implicit upwind scheme that improves stability and reduces execution time by a factor of five to ten. In this report, the model is validated for unstratified or weakly stratified water bodies by comparing predicted velocities and gas transfer rates with data from laboratory experiments and field tests using coarse and fine bubble diffusers.

Book 3D Hydrodynamic Model Development and Verification

Download or read book 3D Hydrodynamic Model Development and Verification written by and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A three-dimensional numerical model was developed to simulate hydrodynamic, temperature, and water quality distributions in rivers and lakes. In an attempt to get rid of the extra approximation and complexity, no coordinate transformation has been done and z-coordinate system has been employed. The governing equations are the continuity equation, free surface equation, momentum equations, and conservation equations of temperature and water quality. The model employs the time splitting technique which allows splitting the directions in which we end with two-dimensional governing equations and eventually the solution ends with a tri-diagonal matrix, which is easily solved by Thomas algorithm. The first step after developing a numerical model and before adding more features or applying the model to a real case, the model should be verified. The verification of the model was done by implementing the model to known solutions test cases in additional to evaluating whether the code preserves fluid mass. A series of test cases is performed by comparing the model results with the analytical solutions as proposed by many modelers. The model showed good agreement between the analytical and the numerical solution.
