Book Drying and Preheating Coals Before Coking

Download or read book Drying and Preheating Coals Before Coking written by Harold Wesley Jackman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-17 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Drying and Preheating Coals Before Coking: Part 2. Coal Blends Following coking tests on preheated individual coals, described in our Circular 423, similar studies have been made on four coal blends, all of which were dried and preheated over a range of 230° to 450° F before coking. It has been shown that preheating consistently reduces the coking time, thereby increasing the potential coking capacity of a coke-oven battery. This increase in capacity for the blends studied ranged from approximately 25 to 50 percent at the highest preheat temperatures tried. It also has been shown that coke strength is not affected appreciably by preheating blends that are capable of producing strong coke without preheat. Coke sizing is not greatly affected, nor are coke or tar yields. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Drying and Preheating Coals Before Coking, Vol. 1: Individual Coals Several ways to accomplish this objective have been proposed, including the construction of tall coke ovens, holding 27 to over 30 tons of coal, as compared with 15 to 18 tons in the average present-day oven. Tall ovens have been developed and used in Europe, and several batteries are under construction or planned in this coun try and Canada. This book was released on 2017-11-18 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Coke From Medium-Volatile and Illinois Coals Illinois coals have been used continuously in blends for metallurgical coke since the days of World War II. Their use has presented certain problems in blend ing procedure which have been studied both experimentally and on a commercial scale. Where proper procedures have been developed and followed, the use of Illi nois coal has been found advantageous, involving no sacrifice in coke quality and reducing over-all costs. Book Coking Coals of Illinois

Download or read book Coking Coals of Illinois written by Harold Wesley Jackman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-18 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Coking Coals of Illinois: Their Use in Blends for Metallurgical Coke Much of the research behind the development of the coal blend at Granite City, and of other blends utilizing Illinois coals, has been carried out in the lab oratories and pilot coke ovens at the Illinois State Geological Survey. The orig inal slot-type oven (reed, 1947) and the newer movable-wall oven (jackman, l955a) have been developed and operated so that coking results closely duplicate those obtained in commercial oven practice. Results of tests made with the pilot oven may be used, therefore, as a dependable guide to anticipate performance of an experimental coal blend in commercial ovens. We wish to thank the coke and steel companies that have furnished us with coals for these tests, and Illinois coal producers who furnished the No. 5 and No. 6 seam coals. We are grateful also to those of our own staff who have co operated in obtaining samples, operating the pilot oven, and making analyses of all coals and cokes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Coal and Coke The preparation of this book was undertaken in part because of the requests for information made to the author by numerous friends engaged in the manufacture of coal gas, and in part with the desire of placing before the American student of coal gas production, data in a concise form covering the various systems of coal carbonization. Baltimore was the first city in America to undertake to supply illuminating gas as a commercial commodity. The residents of this city were invited in 1816 to visit Peale's Museum to see the new burning air, the name given to coal gas by the advertising agent of the museum. This exhibition took place just six months after the daily papers had announced that Covent Garden Thea tre in London, as well as several streets in the English capitol, were illuminated by the burning of coal gas. Unfortunately, coal gas manufacture received a serious set back through the advent of carburetted water-gas, and this con dition has continued, until now approximately 75 per cent. Of the gas manufactured is produced in the water-gas generator. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
