Book excerpt: Art and poetry, mystery and desire collide in this sensual and “elegantly moving” literary romance set in the cobbled streets and painted halls of Florence, Italy (New Yorker). Margot Harrington, an American volunteer in Florence, is an expert at book conservancy. While struggling to save a waterlogged convent library, she comes across a fabulous volume of 16 erotic drawings by Giulio Romano, accompanying 16 steamy sonnets by Pietro Aretino. When first published over 4 centuries ago, the Vatican ordered all copies destroyed. This one—now unique—volume has survived. The abbess prevails upon Margot to save the order’s finances by selling the magnificently illustrated erotica discreetly—meaning without the bishop’s knowledge. Margot’s other clandestine project is a middle-aged Italian who is boldly attempting radical measures to save endangered frescoes. She is 29 and available; he, older and married. He shares her sense of mission and soon her bed in this daring story of spiritual longing and earthly desire.

Download or read book Italian Witchcraft and Shamanism written by Angela Puca and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2024-04-11 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shamanism is thriving as an exotic import and a hidden native tradition in Italy today. This ethnographical work uncovers two faces of Italian shamanism. The first is trans-cultural shamans who creatively adapt rituals and beliefs from indigenous cultures worldwide. Second, extensive fieldwork shows how regional folk magic practices of segnatoriand segnatrici constitute a little-known but enduring form of native Italian shamanism. By documenting these parallel worlds, contemporary magic workers appear to be the heirs of ancient local healing traditions. Offering rare insights into vernacular religion, this book vividly portrays shamans' past and present on the Italian peninsula.
Download or read book Della Medicina written by Lisa Fazio and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2024-10-08 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: • Details the healing techniques and folk wisdom the author learned from her Italian grandparents and from healers in Southern Italy, including plant preparation methods, medicines, rituals, recipes, kitchen magic, and protective magic • Provides a materia medica of plants important in this tradition, sharing each plant’s history, mythology, and both practical and magical uses • Reveals how working with traditional plant medicines can help us connect to and revitalize our own ancestral traditions for deep inner healing Building upon the in-depth folk wisdom she learned from her immigrant grandparents as well as from local healers in Southern Italy, second-generation Italian-American and experienced herbalist Lisa Fazio shares herbal traditions and practices from the Italian diaspora and reveals how working with traditional plant medicines can help us connect to ancestral traditions for deep inner healing. She explains how the herbal healing practices of her Italian ancestors were simply a part of everyday life, what they called Benedicaria, which literally means “the Blessing Way” but is more often translated as “the things we do.” Examining how plants are not only food and medicine but a vital yet invisible part of traditional communities, she details the techniques of Benedicaria, folk Catholicism, and the animistic traditions of her ancestors, including plant dialects, preparation methods, rituals, and recipes, as well as provides a materia medica. Discussing the relationship between Italian folk medicine and Italian witchcraft, she explores kitchen magic and protective magic, including practices for warding off the adverse effects of the evil eye. Sharing valuable and nearly forgotten teachings from the Southern Italian herbal tradition, the author also shows how her journey to reconnect with her family’s healing practices offers guidance for anyone seeking to reconnect with their ancestors.

Book excerpt: Nineteenth-Century Women’s Movements and the Bible examines politically motivated women’s movements in the nineteenth century, including the legal, cultural, and ecclesiastical contexts of women. Focusing on the period beginning with the French Revolution in 1789 through the end of World War I in 1918, contributors explore the many ways that women’s lives were limited in both the public and domestic spheres. Essays consider the social, political, biblical, and theological factors that resulted in a multinational raising of awareness and emancipation for women in the nineteenth century and the strengthening of their international networks. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Beatrice Julia written by Camille T. Christie and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2000-01-20 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beatrice & Julia With a sensuous eye and profound sense of history, Camille T. Christie tells the story of Julia Allen's quest for the truth about the murder of Beatrice Cenci’s father, a 16th century Roman nobleman. Julia herself is under suspicion by the NYPD for her father’s death. The case was not pursued for lack of evidence. While in the chapel of the Cenci, Julia meets a humble but shrewd custodian who asks for her help in getting an ancient prayer book smuggled out of the country. It turns out to contain several handwritten sheets of the Beatrice’s journal. The journal reveals Beatrice, as she was, neither a heroine nor a cruel murderer, which somehow overcomes fate and death. At Petrella Castle, Julia takes the path to the same mountain where the patricide occurred. There, an image of her father’s death comes back to her. The mountain becomes a metaphor for the cruelty that both women experienced at the hands of their fathers. Here is a novel, both tragic and joyous, intelligent and erotic, a transcendent celebration of passion at the end of two different centuries. A wonderful book, which yields spiritual wisdom and promises to stay long in the mind.

Download or read book Making Italy Anglican written by Stefano Villani and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-01-25 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For almost three hundred years there were those in England who believed that an Italian translation of the Book of Common Prayer could trigger radical change in the political and religious landscape of Italy. The aim was to present the text to the Italian religious and political elite, in keeping with the belief that the English liturgy embodied the essence of the Church of England. The beauty, harmony, and simplicity of the English liturgical text, rendered into Italian, was expected to demonstrate that the English Church came closest to the apostolic model. Beginning in the Venetian Republic and ending with the Italian Risorgimento, the leitmotif running through the various incarnations of this project was the promotion of top-down reform according to the model of the Church of England itself. These ventures mostly had little real impact on Italian history: as Roy Foster once wrote, "the most illuminating history is often written to show how people acted in the expectation of a future that never happened." This book presents one of those histories. Making Italy Anglican tells the story of a fruitless encounter that helps us better to understand both the self-perception of the Church of England's international role and the cross-cultural and religious relations between Britain and Italy. Stefano Villani shows how Italy, as the heart of Roman Catholicism, was--over a long period of time--the very center of the global ambitions of the Church of England.
