Book Preferences in Art Life and Literature Classic Reprint

Download or read book Preferences in Art Life and Literature Classic Reprint written by Harry Quilter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Preferences in Art, Life, and Literature My first desire has been, by presenting my views upon Art and its connection with life, in various forms, and by recording in connected sequence the critical opinions expressed during many years upon English and Foreign painting, to enable the public to judge whether these views and criticisms be substantially just or no, and whether time has not, so far at all events, justified my words. Not even the bitterest critic - and some critics are very bitter - can feel more keenly than myself the imperfections of temper, haste, and form which have so frequently dis figured my periodical writing. Nor can any one resent more than I deplore the apparent indifference and scorn with which Ithave approached and censured work which has always taken labour and thought, and patient, if mis taken, skill to produce. Of old, when I considered that a picture was in a bad style of art, I habitually ignored, if I did not forget, the personal feeling of the artist. Book excerpt: First published in 1967, Victorian Artists documents the painting of the Victorian period, that is, the period between the death of Constable and William IV in 1837, the first Post-Impressionist painting in 1910 and the end of an epoch in British painting. Professor Bell has given special attention to some of the pre-Raphaelite artists, and to Sickert and the Camden Town group. These most illuminating and diverting essays, which originated as Slade lectures at Oxford, combined with a large collection of illustrations, make this a unique discussion of a period whose aesthetic influence is still widely evident. This book will be of interest to students of art and history.

Book Pre Raphaelite Masculinities

Download or read book Pre Raphaelite Masculinities written by Serena Trowbridge and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on recent theoretical developments in gender and men?s studies, Pre-Raphaelite Masculinities shows how the ideas and models of masculinity were constructed in the work of artists and writers associated with the Pre-Raphaelite movement. Paying particular attention to the representation of non-normative or alternative masculinities, the contributors take up the multiple versions of masculinity in Dante Gabriel Rossetti?s paintings and poetry, masculine violence in William Morris?s late romances, nineteenth-century masculinity and the medical narrative in Ford Madox Brown?s Cromwell on His Farm, accusations of ?perversion? directed at Edward Burne-Jones?s work, performative masculinity and William Bell Scott?s frescoes, the representations of masculinity in Pre-Raphaelite illustration, aspects of male chastity in poetry and art, Tannh?er as a model for Victorian manhood, and masculinity and British imperialism in Holman Hunt?s The Light of the World. Taken together, these essays demonstrate the far-reaching effects of the plurality of masculinities that pervade the art and literature of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood.
