The Préface as the recognized manifesto of the new move ment is a document which students cannot afford to neglect, and any mere summary of its contents gives but an inadequate idea of its literary and historical value. As it is given here, it is practically intact, as only those parts have been omitted which refer to the play Cromwell, and which have no general interest. After an acquaintance with this declaration of literary liberty, the student is better prepared than he could be otherwise, to take up the study of Hernmn', which was the first of Hugo's plays to be acted.
