Book Resilience Vulnerability Factors As Predictors of College Adjustment

Download or read book Resilience Vulnerability Factors As Predictors of College Adjustment written by Özge Mergen and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2010-05 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It may be assumed that the various resources individuals have will be needed in coping with the adjustments required in college. Any deficits in individuals' psychological make-up or maladaptive coping strategies will block their adjustment to college. Within this idea of adjustment, adjustment to college and psychological well being were predicted by several variables named as personality, hardiness, and coping strategies under a stressful condition. Results indicated that problem focused coping and helplessness/self blame had a mediator role between personality variables and psychological well being. Neuroticism was named as a vulnerability factor. Students with neuroticism as a personality characteristic were regarded as risk groups, who were likely to use helplessness/self blame coping. On the other hand, personality characteristics such as conscientiousness, openness/intellect, and hardiness were concluded to be a resilience factors together with problem focused coping.

Download or read book Exploring Perceptions of Resilience Cohesion and Stress Amongst Community College Student athletes written by Brandi Segovia and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Student-athletes face a variety of stressors and adversities that become hurdles in both their personal, athletic, and academic lives. This study explores the relationship between resilience, cohesion, and stress amongst community college student-athletes. Community college student-athletes (N=49) completed an online survey using the Group Environment Questionnaire, College Student-Athletes' Life Stress Scale, and Brief Resilience Scale. T-tests were used to compare differences among these variables by gender. Student-athletes reported higher levels of resilience and cohesion, which were related to lower levels of stress. This study illustrates how resilience, belonging, and coach/peer supports help decrease levels of perceived stress within the community college student-athlete population.

Book Collegiate Student athlete s Subjective Well being Related to Mindset and Grit

Download or read book Collegiate Student athlete s Subjective Well being Related to Mindset and Grit written by Steven Christopher Mesquiti and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "There are a number of factors that contribute an individual's level of subjective well-being (SWB) during their college or athletic career. Researchers agree that two integral predictors of SWB are an individual's level of grit and their ability to utilize a growth mindset (Hou et al., 2021; Albert et al., 2019). However, work regarding student-athletes' subjective well-being related to their grit and mindset is limited. This thesis examines the role that established self-regulatory processes (i.e., grit, counterfactual thinking, and mindset) contributing to student-athletes' levels of subjective well-being within their present environment. The present study explored the relationship between these constructs in Division 1, 2, and 3 student-athletes (N = 75) across Central Texas using simple ordinary least squares multiple regression and indirect effects analyses. Findings showed that grit alone was the sole positive predictor of well-being in student-athletes, accounting for approximately 30% of the variance in SWB scores. Collectively, these results suggest that grit may serve student-athletes well, as they pursue long-term goals both within and outside their athletic domains." -- P. vii

Book Cognitive Learning and Study Strategy Predictors of Student athlete Academic Success and Academic Progress Rates

Download or read book Cognitive Learning and Study Strategy Predictors of Student athlete Academic Success and Academic Progress Rates written by Janet Cain Moore and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to explore a range of predictor variables believed to influence the academic success of student-athletes as measured by cumulative grade point averages (CGPA) and academic progress rates (APR). This study included 210 scholarship student-athletes participating in intercollegiate athletics at a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) limited-resource institution. Multiple regression analysis found standardized test scores (Test), high school core grade point averages (HSGPA), the Will composite scale of the Learning and Study Strategies Inventory, 2nd Edition (LASSI-II), gender, and generational status (i.e. first-generation or non-first-generation) to be most predictive of student-athlete cumulative grade point averages (CGPA). Independent t-tests were conducted on all predictor variables in the study and found significant differences between males and females on the variables of HSGPA, Test, and CGPA with female student-athletes scoring higher on all of these measures. Significant differences were also found between first-generation and non-first-generation student-athletes on variables of HSGPA, Test, Skill, Will, and CGPA with non-first-generation student-athletes scoring higher on all of these measures. Student-athletes participating in non-revenue sports had significantly higher scores on the HSGPA, Test, and CGPA variables. Logistic regression analyses using found standardized test scores to be the only predictor variable in this study to consistently contribute to the prediction of APR point loss.

Book Collegiate Student athletes Academic Success

Download or read book Collegiate Student athletes Academic Success written by Kai'Iah A. James and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation study examines the impact of traditional and non-cognitive variables on the academic prediction model for a sample of collegiate student-athletes. Three hundred and fifty-nine NCAA Division IA male and female student-athletes, representing 13 sports, including football and men's and women's basketball provided demographic information (i.e., race, academic classification, gender, scholarship status) and provided responses to the Academic Communication Anxiety Test instrument. The Associate Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Services provided precollege and college academic information (high school GPA, SAT/ACT score, collegiate GPA) and this information along with data provided by the participants was entered into a multiple regression analysis. The purpose of the study was to determine which variables predicted student-athlete college GPA and if participation in a revenue-generating versus a nonrevenue-generating sport impacted college GPA. The analyses indicated that the ACAT was a valid and reliable measure (alpha = .94) with three factors. In addition, high school core GPA, study hall hour requirement, academic classification, and pre-college standardized test score made significant contributions to the prediction equation. Participation in a revenue-generating sport was found to significantly impact GPA.
