For example, in 1970 Venezky made a seminal contribution with The Structure of English Orthography in which he showed how both sequential redundancy (probable and permissible letter sequences) and rules of letter-sound correspondence contribute to orthographic structure. In 1980 Ehri introduced the concept of orthographic images, that is, the representation of written words in memory, and proposed that the image is created by an amalgamation of the word's orthographic and phonological properties. In 1981 Taylor described the evolution of orthographies in writing systems-from the earliest logographies for pictorial representation of ideas to syllabaries for phonetic representation of sounds to alphabets for phonemic representation of sounds. In 1985 Frith proposed a stage model for the role of orthographic knowledge in development of word recognition: Initially in the logographic stage a few words can be recognized on the basis of partial spelling information; in the alphabetic stage words are. recognized on the basis of grapheme-phoneme correspondence; in the orthographic stage spelling units are recognized automatically without phonological mediation. Book excerpt: The study examined the contributions of orthographic processing factors to the spelling achievement of typically developing middle-elementary students. The researcher framed orthographic processing as a multilinguistic, multidimensional construct involving process factors related to procedural orthographic operations and product factors related to declarative orthographic knowledge. Accordingly, the basic correlational design analyzed data related to phonological awareness, orthographic coding, word-specific (lexical) orthographic knowledge, general (sublexical) orthographic knowledge, spoken morphological awareness, receptive oral vocabulary, and the composite predictor variables of declarative orthographic knowledge and orthographic processing. The researcher and two trained assistants collected the data from a convenience sample of 59 fourth and 71 fifth grade students from three research sites in southeastern Wisconsin using a battery of standardized and experimental tasks. Overall spelling achievement measured with a norm-referenced assessment and multilinguistic spelling achievement assessed with a multilinguistic, prescriptive spelling instrument functioned as the dependent variables. Pearson product-moment correlation analysis disclosed significant relationships among all research variables including a strong relationship between the two dependent variables. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses indicated that orthographic processing, orthographic coding, declarative orthographic knowledge, and word-specific (lexical) knowledge predicted unique variance in overall spelling achievement and multilinguistic spelling achievement. The largest significant contributions occurred when orthographic coding, word-specific (lexical) orthographic knowledge, and general (sublexical) orthographic knowledge entered the regressions as separate predictor variables. In addition, spoken morphological awareness contributed unique variance to spelling achievement in five out of six of the regressions. Phonological awareness contributed significant unique variance to multilinguistic spelling achievement only when regressed with orthographic coding, word-specific (lexical) orthographic knowledge, and general (sublexical) orthographic knowledge. Further, the findings indicated that middle-elementary students drew upon phonological, orthographic, and morphological linguistic processes while spelling, consistent with the repertoire theory of spelling. Thus, the implications of the study suggested that spelling instruction and assessment should address the multidimensional nature of orthographic processing within a multilinguistic framework.

The overall conclusion that emerges from these eight chapters is that the depth of an orthographic system does influence literacy acquisition primarily by slowing down the acquisition of reading skills. Even so, studies show that dyslexic readers can be found across all orthographic systems whether shallow or deep, which shows that dyslexia also has internal cognitive and biological components. Part III, Literacy Acquisition: Instructional Perspectives, explores literacy acquisition from developmental and instructional perspectives and ends with a look into the future of literacy research. In order to optimize the teaching of spelling, a detailed understanding of its development and the factors that affect that development is indispensable. Numerous influences on spelling development have been identified and studied in depth thus far, but one aspect that merits further consideration is visual processing. The present study employed a longitudinal structural equation modeling methodology in order to consider the concurrent and predictive effects of visual processing abilities on both spelling and orthographic processing. Results demonstrated significant concurrent and predictive relationships among these variables, primarily when children are in grades one and two. A significant predictive link was found between exogenous visual attention at the end of grade one and spelling at the beginning of grade two. Additional significant predictive relationships were found between coherent motion detection at the beginning of grade two and orthographic knowledge at the end of grade two as well as between exogenous visual attention at the beginning of grade two and orthographic knowledge at the end of grade two. Concurrent relationships were found, but were limited to grade one. These results have implications for the theoretical understanding of the influence of visual processes on the development of both spelling and orthographic knowledge. Furthermore, these results could potentially contribute to the development of an intervention for spelling that includes a magnocellular dorsal stream training component.

Cognitive, linguistic, educational, and social factors of literacy development are all taken into account. The volume consists of three subsequent parts. The first part goes into phonological precursors of literacy development. In this part the focus is on the development of early language precursors of of reading and writing. The cultural foundations of these precursors are explored, and their links with reading development are dealt with in detail. Different psycholinguistic approaches are also proposed to explain the occurrence of literacy problems. In the second part, the scope is on the constraints of reading and writing efficiency at the word level and beyond. The acquisition of reading and writing is seen as a result from the interaction between phonological, orthographic, and semantic processes. A crosslinguistic perspective is taken on the role of writing system factors in the acquisition of literacy skills. The final part deals with the role of social and educational factors in literacy acquisition. Starting from a crosscultural perspective, the central issue is how the attainment of functional literacy is dependent on sociocultural variation. The predictors of more advanced levels of literacy development are considered, including foreign language literacy and adult literacy.
