Book Correlations of Soil and Rock Properties in Geotechnical Engineering

Download or read book Correlations of Soil and Rock Properties in Geotechnical Engineering written by Jay Ameratunga and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-11 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a one-stop reference to the empirical correlations used extensively in geotechnical engineering. Empirical correlations play a key role in geotechnical engineering designs and analysis. Laboratory and in situ testing of soils can add significant cost to a civil engineering project. By using appropriate empirical correlations, it is possible to derive many design parameters, thus limiting our reliance on these soil tests. The authors have decades of experience in geotechnical engineering, as professional engineers or researchers. The objective of this book is to present a critical evaluation of a wide range of empirical correlations reported in the literature, along with typical values of soil parameters, in the light of their experience and knowledge. This book will be a one-stop-shop for the practising professionals, geotechnical researchers and academics looking for specific correlations for estimating certain geotechnical parameters. The empirical correlations in the forms of equations and charts and typical values are collated from extensive literature review, and from the authors' database.

This book was released on 2020-11-16 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers different aspects of real-world applications of optimization algorithms. It provides insights from the Sixth International Conference on Harmony Search, Soft Computing and Applications held at Istanbul University, Turkey, in July 2020. Harmony Search (HS) is one of the most popular metaheuristic algorithms, developed in 2001 by Prof. Joong Hoon Kim and Prof. Zong Woo Geem, that mimics the improvisation process of jazz musicians to seek the best harmony. The book consists of research articles on novel and newly proposed optimization algorithms; the theoretical study of nature-inspired optimization algorithms; numerically established results of nature-inspired optimization algorithms; and real-world applications of optimization algorithms and synthetic benchmarking of optimization algorithms.

Book A Study of the Correlation Potential of the Optimum Moisture Content Maximum Dry Density and Consolidated Drained Shear Strength of Plastic Fine grained Soils with Index Properties

Download or read book A Study of the Correlation Potential of the Optimum Moisture Content Maximum Dry Density and Consolidated Drained Shear Strength of Plastic Fine grained Soils with Index Properties written by Marvin Tartt Harris and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The correlation potential of the compaction properties and the consolidated drained shear strength parameters of plastic fine-grained soils with index properties was investigated in this study. The interrelationships of these properties were derived through graphical and multilinear regression analysis. The compaction properties, optimum moisture content, and maximum dry density were found to be related to many of the index properties. The most important relationships were with the plasticity indices and the percentage of particles smaller than two microns; the highest degree of simple correlation was achieved with the liquid limit. The consolidated drained shear parameters, cohesion, and the angle of internal friction were correlated with many of the index properties; however, the magnitude of the computed correlation coefficients were not indicative of a high degree of correlation. The correlation of the shear parameters with the plasticity index was the most significant. Many useful equations and graphical procedures for rapidly predicting the compaction and shear parameters from index properties have been developed. The accuracy of these equations and graphical procedures has been evaluated herein and found to be sufficiently accurate for most prediction situations. Through varied data considerations, it was determined that the best approach to accurate correlation would be to restrict the analyses to soils of similar origin or to those of a limited geographic area, in lieu of focusing upon soils of varied origin as a unit. The investigator is hopeful that this fact and other facts brought out herein will prove useful to those attempting similar studies in the future"--Abstract, leaf ii.

Book Shear Strength Characteristics of a Silty Clay

Download or read book Shear Strength Characteristics of a Silty Clay written by Ramachandra Phanikumar and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shear strength of soils is an important engineering aspect because shear strength characteristics are widely used in various applications such as bearing capacity and earth pressure of soils. Shear strength of sands is somewhat simpler than that of clays, which are complex materials exhibiting engineering behaviour difficult to predict. Shear strength of clays depends of water content, drainage conditions, rate of loading and degree of compaction.Unconfined compression tests were performed on cylindrical samples compacted at different remoulded densities chosen from the compaction curves of the soil. Proctor compaction tests were performed on the soil at three different compaction energies corresponding to N=25, 35 and 50. Dry densities of test samples corresponding to water contents of 10%,12% and 14% were chosen from the three compaction curves pertaining to N=25,35 and 50. Remoulded cylindrical samples were prepared for the performance of unconfined compression tests at the above dry densities and water contents. Stress strain characteristics, variation of peak compressive stress with significant parameters were studied.

Book Compaction Characteristics of Non Gravel and Gravelly Soils Using a Small Compaction Apparatus

Download or read book Compaction Characteristics of Non Gravel and Gravelly Soils Using a Small Compaction Apparatus written by Avirut Chinkulkijniwat and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The standard Proctor test has been widely used and accepted for characterizing soil compatibility for field compaction control. This paper presents a time- and cost-effective method to predict standard Proctor compaction characteristics of non-gravel and gravelly soils using a proposed small apparatus. This small apparatus is similar to the standard Proctor apparatus and easily introduced into soil mechanics laboratory. A comparison of the compaction characteristics of non-gravel soils measured from the proposed small apparatus and from the standard Proctor apparatus shows that this small apparatus can be used as an alternative to the standard Proctor apparatus and regarded as a practical tool for non-gravel soils. For gravelly soils, gravel content mainly controls compaction energy transmitted to the fine fraction and hence its compaction characteristics. A relationship between the generalized optimum water content of the fine fraction in the gravelly soil and the gravel content is established. This relationship leads to an effective method of predicting standard Proctor compaction characteristics of gravelly soils compacted in standard molds using compaction results from the proposed small apparatus. Comparisons between the predicted and the measured compaction characteristics are in very good agreement.
