Book Fatigue Crack Propagation in Structures with Simulated Rivet Forces

Download or read book Fatigue Crack Propagation in Structures with Simulated Rivet Forces written by I. E. Figge and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analytical and experimental studies were conducted on rates of fatigue crack propagation in sheet specimens containing either symmetric or nonsymmetric cracks subjected to uniform external loadings, simple concentrated loadings, or combinations of both. The concentrated loads simulated the rivet forces in an actual structure and were applied by a special hydraulic fixture which is described. An experimentally determined relation between the stress state near the tip of the crack and the fatigue crack propagation rate for a given material was employed to predict the crack growth for specimens subjected to simple loading conditions with good agreement. Superposition of stress-intensity factors for simple loading was used sucessfully to predict crack growth for specimens subjected to complex loadings.

Book Stress intensity Factor for a Cracked Sheet with Riveted and Uniformly Spaced Stringers

Download or read book Stress intensity Factor for a Cracked Sheet with Riveted and Uniformly Spaced Stringers written by and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stress-intensity factor and forces in the most highly loaded rivet and stringer were calculated for a cracked sheet with riveted and uniformly spaced stringers. Two symmetrical cases of crack location were considered - the case of a crack extending equally on both sides of a stringer and the case of a crack extending equally on both sides of a point midway between two stringers. The complete results are presented on design graphs for systematic variations of crack lengths much less than the stringer spacing. Also, the forces in the most highly loaded stringer and rivet asymptotically approach limiting values for increasing crack length. The stress-intensity factor and the limiting values of the stringer and rivet forces are smaller for stiffer or more closely spaced stringers or for more closely spaced rivets.

Book Fatigue of Structures and Materials

Download or read book Fatigue of Structures and Materials written by J. Schijve and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-12-16 with total page 627 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue of structures and materials covers a wide scope of different topics. The purpose of the present book is to explain these topics, to indicate how they can be analyzed, and how this can contribute to the designing of fatigue resistant structures and to prevent structural fatigue problems in service. Chapter 1 gives a general survey of the topic with brief comments on the signi?cance of the aspects involved. This serves as a kind of a program for the following chapters. The central issues in this book are predictions of fatigue properties and designing against fatigue. These objectives cannot be realized without a physical and mechanical understanding of all relevant conditions. In Chapter 2 the book starts with basic concepts of what happens in the material of a structure under cyclic loads. It illustrates the large number of variables which can affect fatigue properties and it provides the essential background knowledge for subsequent chapters. Different subjects are presented in the following main parts: • Basic chapters on fatigue properties and predictions (Chapters 2–8) • Load spectra and fatigue under variable-amplitude loading (Chapters 9–11) • Fatigue tests and scatter (Chapters 12 and 13) • Special fatigue conditions (Chapters 14–17) • Fatigue of joints and structures (Chapters 18–20) • Fiber-metal laminates (Chapter 21) Each chapter presents a discussion of a speci?c subject.

Book An Improved Method of Collocation for the Stress Analysis of Cracked Plates with Various Shaped Boundaries

Download or read book An Improved Method of Collocation for the Stress Analysis of Cracked Plates with Various Shaped Boundaries written by J. C. Newman and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An improved method of boundary collocation was developed and applied to the two-dimensional stress analysis of cracks emanating from, or in the vicinity of, holes or boundaries of various shapes. The solutions, presented in terms of the stress-intensity factor, were based on the complex variable method of Muskhelishvili and a modified boundary-collocation method. The complex-series stress functions developed for simply and multiply connected regions containing cracks were constructed so that the boundary conditions on the crack surfaces are satisfied exactly. The conditions on the other boundaries were satisfied approximately by the modified collocation method. This improved method gave more rapid numerical convergence than other collocation techniques investigated.
