Book Natural Disasters When Will They Reach Me

Download or read book Natural Disasters When Will They Reach Me written by Isuri Wijesundera and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-05-16 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The expected time of impact, also known as the mean first passage time (MFPT) to reach failure, is a critical metric in the management of natural disasters. The complexity of the dynamics governing natural disasters lead to stochastic behaviour. This book shows that state transitions of many such systems translate into random walks on their respective state spaces, biased and shaped by environmental inhomogeneity. Thus the probabilistic treatment of those random walks gives valuable insights of expected behaviour. A comprehensive case study of predicting cyclone induced flood is followed by a discussion of generic methods that predict MFPT addressing directional bias. This is followed by discussing MFPT prediction methods in systems showing network inhomogeneity. All presented methods are illustrated using real datasets of natural disasters. The book ends with a short discussion of possible future research areas introducing the problem of predicting MFPT for bush-fire propagation.

Book New Trends in Geometric Analysis

Download or read book New Trends in Geometric Analysis written by Antonio Alarcón and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-11-25 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to provide an overview of some of the progress made by the Spanish Network of Geometric Analysis (REAG, by its Spanish acronym) since its born in 2007. REAG was created with the objective of enabling the interchange of ideas and the knowledge transfer between several Spanish groups having Geometric Analysis as a common research line. This includes nine groups at Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Universidad de Granada, Universidad Jaume I de Castellón, Universidad de Murcia, Universidad de Santiago de Compostela and Universidad de Valencia. The success of REAG has been substantiated with regular meetings and the publication of research papers obtained in collaboration between the members of different nodes. On the occasion of the 15th anniversary of REAG this book aims to collect some old and new contributions of this network to Geometric Analysis. The book consists of thirteen independent chapters, all of them authored by current members of REAG. The topics under study cover geometric flows, constant mean curvature surfaces in Riemannian and sub-Riemannian spaces, integral geometry, potential theory and Riemannian geometry, among others. Some of these chapters have been written in collaboration between members of different nodes of the network, and show the fruitfulness of the common research atmosphere provided by REAG. The rest of the chapters survey a research line or present recent progresses within a group of those forming REAG. Surveying several research lines and offering new directions in the field, the volume is addressed to researchers (including postdocs and PhD students) in Geometric Analysis in the large.

Book Simulating Initial Attack with Two Fire Containment Models

Download or read book Simulating Initial Attack with Two Fire Containment Models written by Romain M. Mees and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given a variable rate of fireline construction and an elliptical fire growth model, two methods for estimating the required number of resources, time to containment, and the resulting fire area were compared. Five examples illustrate some of the computational differences between the simple and the complex methods. The equations for the two methods can be used and programmed to estimate fire size and perimeter, time-to-containment, and the number of resources required as a function of spread rate.

Book How to Predict the Spread and Intensity of Forest and Range Fires

Download or read book How to Predict the Spread and Intensity of Forest and Range Fires written by Richard C. Rothermel and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manual documents procedures for estimating the rate of forward spread, intensity, flame length, and size of fires burning in forests and rangelands. Contains instructions for obtaining fuel and weather data, calculating fire behavior, and interpreting the results for application to actual fire problems.
