A computer program ULTRAT (Ultimate and rate of heave) was developed for predictions of potential heave and heave with time based on two models for characterization of swell behavior: the soil suction and mechanical swell models. The soil suction model relates volume change with change in matrix soil suction and water content.

Book excerpt: Methods of characterizing swell behavior and predicting total potential heave of foundation soils were compared with field measurements for three test sections. The methods used included nine empirical procedures, three types of consolidometer tests, and a thermocouple psychrometric soil suction method. It was found that simple classification tests can provide reasonable estimates of field heaves. Predictions of potential heave using the consolidometer were sometimes low and may often represent minimal heaves when compared to field observations. Predictions based on the soil suction method provided reasonable upper limits for all test sites.

Book excerpt: A relatively economical and expedient numerical procedure and computer code based on the finite difference method were developed for predicting heave with time for heterogeneous expansive soils beneath structures idealized as two-dimensional. The computer code will also compute the potential heave assuming saturation of the foundation soils based on McDowell's swell data. The heave with time estimates should be useful for structures near which penetration of rainwater from the ground surface is permitted, provided that ponding of surface water and external water from leaking water and sewer lines does not occur. The potential heave should be useful if the foundation soils become saturated from excessive watering, poor surface drainage, and leaking water and sewer lines. The required input data include the structural load, specific gravity, liquid and plastic limits, initial dry density and water content, coefficient of vertical permeability, ratio of the horizontal to the vertical coefficient of permeability, and swell and suction relationships of the foundation soils.

Many methods have been proposed for estimating expansive soil heave, but there are no proven guidelines for evaluating the behavior of foundations on swelling soils. Foundations built on expansive soils are often designed without considering the swelling properties of the soil, resulting in unsightly cracking or structural damage to the completed building. A practical method for evaluating the behavior of foundations on undisturbed expansive soil involves a site study, laboratory tests on typical samples, prediction of the total and differential heave of the foundation soil beneath various types of foundations, and choice of a suitable and economical foundation design. The site study will help define the relative vulnerability of the foundation soils to heave, indicate the soil strata that have the most likely potential for swell, and provide samples for laboratory tests. The type of foundation is usually controlled by the structural and architectural requirements and site and subsurface soil characteristics.
