Download or read book Student Teacher s Perceptions of the Pre Service Mathematics Programme in a Primary Teachers College in Zimbabwe written by Barnabas Muyengwa and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2013 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This case study investigated the perceptions of the third year student teachers of the first year pre-service Mathematics programme at Seke Teachers' College in Zimbabwe. Student background characteristics of gender, age, teaching experience and Mathematics specialisation were the independent variables also investigated. Data was collected from 278 third year students enrolled for the general Diploma in Education course using questionnaires with a five point Likert type 33 item rating scale and open ended items. The data so collected were analysed both quantitatively and qualitatively. The findings indicated that although the programme was able to provide students with a foundation in subject knowledge more could be done to improve on training in teaching methods and provision of resources. From the variables investigated gender was found to have an effect on students' perceptions of the programme but teaching experience was found to have no effect. The possible relationship between the independent variables of age and Mathematics specialisation and the dependent variable of students' perception of the programme was indicated in too few items to warrant a definite conclusion. Implications for the improvement of the programme are that there is need for the college to revisit some aspects of the structure and organisation of the programme. There is also need for further research involving all primary teachers' colleges.

Download or read book Elicited Metaphor Analysis in Educational Discourse written by Wan Wan and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ability to recognise, discuss and evaluate one’s educational beliefs and working practices in metaphoric terms has for several years been seen as a highly valuable tool for increasing self-awareness, facilitating learning (or teaching), and/or predicting behaviour. This is the first edited book solely devoted to the topic of researching elicited metaphor in education, and brings together key researchers from China, Poland, Puerto Rico, South America, UK and USA. The 12 chapters involve overviews and state-of-the-art articles, articles focussing on methodology and validation, as well as reflections on the effectiveness of techniques and research reports of recent empirical studies. The bulk of the articles relate to literacy (L1 and L2) and teacher education, but science education is also addressed. The book offers useful models for academics, professionals and PhD students in these areas, and provides solutions for improving the validity of elicited metaphor techniques in educational research.

Download or read book Reforming Teaching and Teacher Education written by Eija Kimonen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-21 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are the prerequisites for reforming education, and how can these reforms be seen in school development and culture? How should teacher education support this reform process? What are the principles and practices underlying the functioning of the schools of tomorrow? These questions are examined in this unique volume. The authors in this book argue that the central function of teacher education and education in general is to respond to the challenges brought on by the twenty-first century. According to this approach, the competencies and skills needed in the future are not merely a new addition to school activities, but rather something requiring a comprehensive reform of school culture encompassing teacher education, curricula, and teaching methods. Such a fundamental process of change in the action and thinking models used by schools would be an effort to achieve a complete transformation, the result of which would be schools developing into organizations that are both creative and imbued with a strong sense of community. A central attribute is that the creation of new knowledge is not just restricted to the classroom but also takes place in out-of-school environments. This would link learning to its natural context, eventually leading to an ideal instruction that is actively problem oriented, holistic, and life centered. This reform-minded volume is divided into three parts. The first part focuses on the reform processes in teacher education, the second on the reforms of pedagogics at schools and teacher education institutions, and the third on the processes of reculturing schools. New prospects for active schools in the United States and Europe, as well as in Japan and China, are discussed.
