Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pulpit Prayers O Lord our God, from Whom cometh every good and perfect gift, give us, we pray Thee, the consciousness of Thy presence in this hour of worship, and grant that whatever we may each of us most need for our inward life we may find here and now. Draw our hearts to Thyself, we beseech Thee; prepare us for better service; help each of us to pass beyond the outward forms of worship; and to come, in the silence of our minds, into the secret place of the Most High. Flash Thy truth upon all our hearts and minds, help us in hearing and in speaking, bless us each as we severally require, receive our thanks for the individual and private blessings which we each possess, and for the universal gift which we each may have - the unspeakable gift of God in Jesus Christ. Hear us, we pray Thee, and grant us Thy presence and help now, for our Saviour Christ's sake. O Lord, we thank Thee that Thou hast, in some measure, drawn back the veil, and shown us the things which are at Thy right hand. And we beseech Thee to help each of us, so long as we tarry here below, that we may press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. N 0 man ever had more enemies than Christ had. N 0 man ever produced greater excitement. And he finally declared that he came, not to send peace, but a sword. His Gospel was to be like light in a bat's cave. It was to be like fire. It was to reveal truth. And the apostles were described as the men who had turned the world upside down. These that have turned the world upside down are come hither. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Centenary Pulpit: A Collection of Pastoral Prayers Help us to understand that we fulfill our high calling under God in the fidelity which we show in the dark day and in the difficult place. We come lifting before Thee our prayer for all those-of any name or sign who this holy day come to Thee in devout worship. Make real to them, we pray Thee, the treasures of grace - a fresh sense of Thy presence, a new confidence in Thee - the pressure of the guiding Hand - the leading of the kindly Light. But we come praying, likewise, for those who do not look to Thee in humble and devout worship but who should; not less needy because unconscious of their need - for them, too, we pray that something may come, something may happen; some word, some remembrance, some bit of longing that will turn wayward thoughts and willful spirits to the great source of life. Thou art the fountain freely flowing for us all. Help us to hear the voice of the Son of God as He calls us to stoop down and to drink and to live. And let, we humbly pray, the words of our mouths and the meditations of our hearts, no less, be acceptable in Thy sight, 0 Lord, our strength and our redeemer. Amen. Lord, Thou hast searched us and known us. Thou knowest our downsitting and our uprising. Thou under standest our thoughts afar off and art acquainted with all our ways. Whither shall we go from Thy spirit or whither shall we flee from Thy presence? If we ascend up into heaven Thou art there - far beyond our highest thought, our noblest concept. And if we make our beds in hell Thou art there, for no one of us may fall lower or wander farther than Thy mercy. Thine is the light that follows all our way and the love that will not let us go. If we say that darkness will conceal us - darkness and light are both alike to Thee. Search us, 0 God, and know our hearts. Try us and know our thoughts. See if there be any wicked way in us and lead us in the way everlasting. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Sermons of Henry Ward Beecher in Plymouth Church Brooklyn

Download or read book The Sermons of Henry Ward Beecher in Plymouth Church Brooklyn written by Henry Ward Beecher and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-14 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sermons of Henry Ward Beecher, in Plymouth Church, Brooklyn: From Verbatim Reports by T. J. Ellinwood; "Plymouth Pulpit," Sixth Series, March September, 1871 Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbor and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies. Bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you. And pray for them which despite fully use you, and persecute you; that ye may be children of your Father which is in heaven; for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? Do not even the publicans [the worst sort of men] the same? And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? Do not even the publicans so? Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect. That is the way in which he is perfect. Disinterestedness is the perfection which is meant. He makes his sun to rise upon the just and upon the unjust. He loves the unlovely. He does good to the undeserving. And when you undertake to be perfect, remember the way in which God himself is perfect, and be perfect according to that manner. It is an exhortation to disinterested benevolence as a su preme ideal, both of divine perfection, and of individual perfection. A little more lengthy consideration of this will, perhaps, give us a power of inference which we could not otherwise get.
