Book excerpt: Urban Apologetics examines the legitimate issues that Black communities have with Western Christianity and shows how the gospel of Jesus Christ—rather than popular, socioreligious alternatives—restores our identity. African Americans have long confronted the challenge of dignity destruction caused by white supremacy. While many have found meaning and restoration of dignity in the black church, others have found it in ethnocentric socioreligious groups and philosophies. These ideologies have grown and developed deep traction in the black community and beyond. Revisionist history, conspiracy theories, and misinformation about Jesus and Christianity are the order of the day. Many young African Americans are disinterested in Christianity and others are leaving the church in search of what these false religious ideas appear to offer, a spirituality more indigenous to their history and ethnicity. Edited by Dr. Eric Mason and featuring a top-notch lineup of contributors, Urban Apologetics is the first book focused entirely on cults, religious groups, and ethnocentric ideologies prevalent in the black community. The book is divided into three main parts: Discussions on the unique context for urban apologetics so that you can better understand the cultural arguments against Christianity among the Black community. Detailed information on cults, religious groups, and ethnic identity groups that many urban evangelists encounter—such as the Nation of Islam, Kemetic spirituality, African mysticism, Hebrew Israelites, Black nationalism, and atheism. Specific tools for urban apologetics and community outreach. Ultimately, Urban Apologetics applies the gospel to black identity to show that Jesus is the only one who can restore it. This is an essential resource to equip those doing the work of ministry and apology in urban communities with the best available information.

Book Prayer of a Hebrew Israelite

Download or read book Prayer of a Hebrew Israelite written by Unknown Hebrew and published by Unknown Hebrew. This book was released on 2019-02-16 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are you interested in knowing what the Bible says about prayer? Then continue reading. Ephesians 6:18 reads, “18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints.” Knowing YAHUAH's voice is critical to receive the answers to your prayers. To have a good relationship with the Most High, you have to have meaningful conversations; you achieve this through prayer. If you wish to learn the truth, you have to step outside the box; you must exercise an enormous amount of faith to understand how the Most High operates. Hebrews 11:6 reads, “6 But without faith, it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to ELOHIM must believe that he is and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” You cannot please the Most High without faith; as the scriptures state, you have to believe in His ability to help and reward you. You will have to open your "spiritual eyes" to see the Most High's sovereignty; also, believe in things that the world declares foolish. Many expect the Most High to operate the way the world works; the world's ways are not His. Isaiah 55:8-9, it reads, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saithYAHUAH. 9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.” The way He intervenes and delivers His people is unexplainable and extraordinary; no one will steal His glory. Everyone will know that He is behind the scene conducting miracles. Take, for example, the walls of Jericho. YAHUAH made the soldiers in the Israelite army march around the city of Jericho for six days; on the seventh day, they walked around the city seven times; after the priest blew the shofar, the Israelites shouted, and the walls of Jericho fell. To confirm this, look at the book of Joshua 6:20, which reads, “So the people shouted when the priests blew with the trumpets: and it came to pass, when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.” To believe that the walls came down, you have to have faith. It takes an Israelite that knows his ELOHIM to believe; the world has been blinded; they cannot see the Most High's ability; the god of this world has blinded their eyes. 2nd Corinthians 4:4 says, “In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of YAHUSHUA, who is the image of YAHUAH, should shine unto them.” Here is another unexplainable example of how the Most High operates: look at the first exodus. YAHUAH could have led his people, the Israelites, out of the land of Mizrahi (Egypt) another way. Instead, YAHUAH chose to prove to the world that there is nothing too hard for Him. He is the only ELOHIM; He parted the sea and made the Israelites walk on dry land. When YAHUAH delivers you, He will do it remarkably, and only He can take the credit for your deliverance. Here is what others are saying about this book: 5.0 out of 5 stars, An eyes opener. I enjoyed reading this book because I have been searching for the truth about who I am and whose I am. Deut. 28:61-62 Also every sickness, and every plague, which is not written in the book of this law, them will The Most High bring upon thee, until thou be destroyed. Blessed shalt thou be in the city, and blessed shalt thou be in the field ...It is time for nation building and restoratio

Book Boy the Window

Download or read book Boy the Window written by Donald Earl Collins and published by . This book was released on 2013-11 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a preteen Black male growing up in Mount Vernon, New York, there were a series of moments, incidents and wounds that caused me to retreat inward in despair and escape into a world of imagination. For five years I protected my family secrets from authority figures, affluent Whites and middle class Blacks while attending an unforgiving gifted-track magnet school program that itself was embroiled in suburban drama. It was my imagination that shielded me from the slights of others, that enabled my survival and academic success. It took everything I had to get myself into college and out to Pittsburgh, but more was in store before I could finally begin to break from my past. "Boy @ The Window" is a coming-of-age story about the universal search for understanding on how any one of us becomes the person they are despite-or because of-the odds. It's a memoir intertwined with my own search for redemption, trust, love, success-for a life worth living. "Boy @ The Window" is about one of the most important lessons of all: what it takes to overcome inhumanity in order to become whole and human again.

Book Black Judaism

    Book Details:
  • Author : James E. Landing
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2002
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 552 pages

Download or read book Black Judaism written by James E. Landing and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout most black societies today, there are Jews who are not accepted by the worldwide community of Rabbinic Jews. They are known as Black Jews, and the movement they represent is known as Black Judaism. Originating in the post-Civil War southern states, the early leaders of this movement were motivated by oppression and racism to migrate north. They came into contact with Rabbinic Jews and the Judaism they represented, but Black Jews and Black Judaism were rejected. Black Judaism continued to spread and reached the continent of Africa where it became an integral part of the Independent Black Church Movement and an active component of the various struggles for independence. From New York it spread to Latin America, especially the West Indies, and is known there in its most varied form as "Rastafarianism." During the turbulent days of the Civil Rights era, an uneasy alliance developed between some Black Jews and Rabbinic Jews, but again rejection soon followed. Black Judaism has never been a large movement in numbers of adherents, but its influence far exceeds its numbers, making it recognizable, as Landing shows in this book, as one of the most important social movements in African-American history. "There is limited existing literature on the topic and Landing's book offers a much needed analysis of this little known religious phenomenon. The work includes an extensive annotated bibliography and photographic supplement. Recommended for academic and research libraries." -- Association of Jewish Libraries, September/October 2004

Download or read book Biblical Prose Prayer written by Moshe Greenberg and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2008-10-01 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some degree of spiritual enlightenment must be supposed to account for the overall tolerance, even receptivity, of the people; though they refused to comply with the prophets' uncompromising demands, and occasionally persecuted one or another of them, as a rule they allowed them to preach, and even spawned devotees who reverently preserved their speeches until canonization. Unsupported by power and wealth, the classical prophets can have persisted for centuries only because they were rooted in loamy spiritual soil. The populace constituting that soil deserves to be appreciated no less than the exotic flowers that towered above it. What was the spiritual loam that prepared Israel's soil so that prophecy could thrive in it? Any answer to this question must give due consideration to the popular life of prayer. For it was in extemporized praying that the Israelites experienced a nonmagical approach to God in which form was subordinate to content; here, in immediate contact with a God who searched the conscience and the heart, they were sensitized to sincerity in self-disclosure to God; and, finally, it was in prayer that they had constantly to face the issue of adjusting their ways to God's in order to obtain his favor. Greenberg finds in this rich life of private prayer a setting for the high religious ideas--and the scathing critique of worship--which characterized the genius of the prophets of the eighth and ninth centuries BC. This masterful evaluation of biblical prose prayer, a tradition independent of experts and special places, suggests an explanation for the unprecedented democratization of worship in postbiblical Judaism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many centuries Jewish prayer was so dominated by its male creators and male readers that the Jewish woman's role in prayer seems to have been all but obliterated. Yet Jewish women have always prayed and, before prayer became standardized into a formal liturgy, Israelite women offered up spontaneous petitions and hymns to God as freely as did men. While they may not have been able to help constitute a minyan, and while many did not know Hebrew or Aramaic, women produced and used material for prayer at home. The Yiddish tkhines had its origin in a form of supplicatory prayer in the Talmud, whose original intent was to allow for individual private devotion during the standard prayer service. The private Yiddish prayers and devotions for Jewish women continued to use this term. They emerged in the world of premodern Ashkenazic Jewry and represent one of the richest and least-known forms of Jewish religious literature. Because modern sensibility seemed to reject them, and because Yiddish was quickly forgotten by second and third generation Jews in the West, they have been sadly neglected. Although a few have been individually translated into English, this is the first bilingual anthology ever to appear. The prayers in this volume are characterized by a highly personal and intimate style and mark occasions in the religious calendar, such as the Tkhine for the Blessing of the New Moon, as well as occasions in the life of a woman, such as the Tkhine for a Mother who Leads Her Child to Kheyder for the First Time. The tkhines are of great appeal and value to those who wish to hear the voices of Jewish women in history, study Yiddish literature and culture, or create new expressions of spirituality.

Book What Did Jesus Look Like

Download or read book What Did Jesus Look Like written by Joan E. Taylor and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus Christ is arguably the most famous man who ever lived. His image adorns countless churches, icons, and paintings. He is the subject of millions of statues, sculptures, devotional objects and works of art. Everyone can conjure an image of Jesus: usually as a handsome, white man with flowing locks and pristine linen robes. But what did Jesus really look like? Is our popular image of Jesus overly westernized and untrue to historical reality? This question continues to fascinate. Leading Christian Origins scholar Joan E. Taylor surveys the historical evidence, and the prevalent image of Jesus in art and culture, to suggest an entirely different vision of this most famous of men. He may even have had short hair.
