Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the late 1980s visibility has become a currency of social recognition, and a political issue. It also brought forth a new discipline, visual culture studies, and a hotly contested debate unfolded between art history and visual culture studies over the interpretation of visual culture, whose impact can still be felt today. In this first comparative study Susanne von Falkenhausen reveals the concepts of seeing as scholarly act that underwrite these competing approaches to visuality and society, along with the agendas of identity politics that motivate them. In close readings of key texts spanning from the early 20th century to the present the author crosses expertly between American, German, and British versions of art history, cultural studies, aesthetics, and film studies.

Book excerpt: Outlining the controversies that have surrounded the academic discipline of English Literature since its institutionalization in the late nineteenth century, this important book draws on a range of archival sources. It addresses issues that are central to the identity of academic English - how the subject came into existence, and what makes it a specialist discipline of knowledge - in a manner that illuminates many of the crises that have affected the development of modern English studies. Atherton also addresses contemporary arguments about the teaching of literary criticism, including an examination of the reforms to A-Level literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seafarers were the first workers to inhabit a truly international labour market, a sector of industry which, throughout the early modern period, drove European economic and imperial expansion, technological and scientific development, and cultural and material exchanges around the world. This volume adopts a comparative perspective, presenting current research about maritime labourers across three centuries, in the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, to understand how seafarers contributed to legal and economic transformation within Europe and across the world. Focusing on the three related themes of legal systems, labouring conditions, and imperial power, these essays explore the dynamic and reciprocal relationship between seafarers' individual and collective agency, and the social and economic frameworks which structured their lives.

Book Anthropologies of Unemployment

Download or read book Anthropologies of Unemployment written by Jong Bum Kwon and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2016-09-09 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anthropologies of Unemployment offers accessible, theoretically innovative, and ethnographically rich examinations of unemployment in rural and urban regions across North and South America, Europe, Africa, and Asia. The diversity of case studies demonstrates that unemployment is a pressing global phenomenon that sheds light on the uneven consequences of free-market ideologies and policies. Economic, social, and cultural marginalization is common in the lives of the unemployed, but their experience and interpretation are shaped by local and national cultural particularities. In exploring those differences, the contributors to this volume employ recent theoretical innovations and engage with some of the more salient topics in contemporary anthropology, such as globalization, migration, youth cultures, bureaucracy, class, gender, and race. Taken together, the chapters reveal that there is something new about unemployment today. It is not a temporary occurrence, but a chronic condition. In adjusting to persistent, longstanding unemployment, people and groups create new understandings of unemployment as well as of work and employment; they improvise new forms of sociality, morality, and personhood. Ethnographic studies such as those found in Anthropologies of Unemployment are crucial if we are to understand the broader forms, meanings, and significance of pervasive economic insecurity and discover the emergence of new social and cultural possibilities.

Book Theft Is Property

  • Publisher : Duke University Press

  • ISBN : 1478007508
  • Pages : 160 pages

Download or read book Theft Is Property written by Robert Nichols and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2019-12-20 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on Indigenous peoples' struggles against settler colonialism, Theft Is Property! reconstructs the concept of dispossession as a means of explaining how shifting configurations of law, property, race, and rights have functioned as modes of governance, both historically and in the present. Through close analysis of arguments by Indigenous scholars and activists from the nineteenth century to the present, Robert Nichols argues that dispossession has come to name a unique recursive process whereby systematic theft is the mechanism by which property relations are generated. In so doing, Nichols also brings long-standing debates in anarchist, Black radical, feminist, Marxist, and postcolonial thought into direct conversation with the frequently overlooked intellectual contributions of Indigenous peoples.

Book PRAXIS English Language Literature and Composition 0041

Download or read book PRAXIS English Language Literature and Composition 0041 written by Sharon A. Wynne and published by Xamonline.com. This book was released on 2010-05-21 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I selected this book to help me study for the Praxis II 0041 because it was one of the only test prep guides to focus solely on that particular test (rather than including all English praxis tests or all Praxis tests or whatnot). I was impressed with the "content" sections of this book. It actually seems to cover a broad overview of what the Praxis II 0041 will cover. However, I am extremely displeased with the publishers' decision to promote the idea that they include 4 practice tests on the cover. If one reads the smaller print, one will see that two of those tests require further payment online. Fine, whatever, so it's only two exams. At least they're explicit about that on the cover of the book, right? Well, let me tell you a secret: the "diagnostic test" they mention hosting on their website, the sample questions in-section in the book, and the "free test in the book" all include overlapping questions. Therefore, the practice test in the back of the book is basically useless.
