Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Practical Angler Another of our tasks was the preparation of ingredients for ren dering the baits more enticing to the fish, though I believe, after reading several receipts, and trying to prepare some of the pre scriptions, a small piece of camphor put into the moss with the worms was all that was ever actually carried into e 'ect. Then we were to have a small box with gimblet holes bored in it, in which a quantity of worms were to be placed, and when this box was sunk (a stone being put in it for the purpose) the worms, as a for lorn hope to escape drowning, it was supposed would crawl out through the holes, and so entice all the fish in the neighbourhood to the spot; to our certain benefit, as to their just as certain de struction. The worms also had to be dug (for we did not then even presume to think of y fishing) and kept in moss, which was to be managed to the very letter according to the directions laid down in Walton. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Concise Practical Treatise on Artificial Fly Fishing for Trout I prefer the spring cog-check wheel, which, when the line is lengthened or shortened, makes a noise like that caused by winding up a clock. By this reel the line may be lengthened or shortened with sufficient rapidity, and with precisely, and no more. Than the proper resistance, the checks preventing the line running out too fast. This reel is, I think, far preferable to the multiplying reel, which is very liable to get out of order. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Red Palmer: A Practical Treatise on Fly Fishing Aving read papers on Fly-fishing before the Gresham and Islington Angling Societies, and contributed occasional articles to the fishing periodicals, I have been persuaded by some of the members of those societies to publish my ideas on the subject, and I now submit them to the public, premising that the following treatise is neither historic nor scientific, but simply an endeavour to communicate what nearly fifty years of practice and careful observation have taught me to consider as correct principles in a concise and practical form. Trusting that it will be received as such, and will be of some assistance to young anglers in cultivating that, which, we are assured by the highest authority on angling, is an art worth learning. Book The Modern Practical Angler

Download or read book The Modern Practical Angler written by H. Cholmondeley-Pennell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-27 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Modern Practical Angler: A Complete Guide to Fly-Fishing, Bottom-Fishing, Trolling I have arrived at conclusions not only differing widely from hitherto received canons, but which, if accepted, will go far to revolutionize, in the direction of simplifying, the whole system both of making and using artificial flies. The question of tackle, also, has for many years occupied much of my attention; and the details of this subject - especially as regards hooks - are entered into with a minuteness which may perhaps seem to re quire apology. The apology is, that the whole art of angling consists really of an aggregation of minutiae, and that upon the difference between, say, a hook of one pattern and a hook of another, often depends, in effect, the difference between a good and a bad day's sport. The present opportunity is taken of submitting to the judgment of anglers a new pattern of hook, con structed on mechanical principles, and the result of some thought and experiment.
