Book excerpt: Abstract: Recommended best practice in school-based occupational therapy emphasizes the delivery of services in the students' natural environment, consultation, and collaboration with the educational team to plan and implement students' educational programs (American Occupational Therapy Association, 1999; Dule, Korner, Williams & Carter, 1999; Hanft & Place, 1996; Mu & Royeen, 2004; Niehues, Bundy, Mattingly, & Lawler, 1991). The purpose of this study was to describe current practice patterns of Ohio school-based occupational therapists, explore factors that influence service delivery decisions, describe therapists agreement with and implementation of collaborative practices. and to explore barriers to the implementation of best practice in the areas of inclusive therapy services and team collaboration. A mailed. written questionnaire was sent to an entire population frame of 609 Ohio school-based occupational therapists. The response rate was 60% (n = 365). with 327 usable responses. Data were analyzed using means. frequencies, percentages. standard deviations, and correlations. Descriptive analysis was used for the qualitative data. The results of this study found that Ohio school-based occupational therapists continue to provide a high percentage of pull-out services with 49% of their direct services provided using a pull-out model. which is consistent with the findings of previous studies (Case-Smith & Cable, 1996; Chiang & Rylance; Spencer, Turkett, Vaughn, & Koenig, 2006). Ohio school-based occupational therapists use remediation interventions 71% of the time. Participants ranked student goals and classroom schedule as the two most influential factors in determining how and where services are delivered. Qualitative results in this area revealed that student characteristics and workload factors also influence their decisions in this area. Although Ohio school-based therapists generally agree with statements describing collaborative practices (M = 4.25), they report not implementing the practices on a consistent basis (M = 3.35), which is consistent with the findings of Dule et al. (1999). The use of a collaborative teaming process can have a significant and positive effect on the use of related services, is highly recommended (Giangreco, 2000; Rainforth & York- Barr, 1997; Villa & Thousand, 1996), and warrants high prioritization in the delivery of services. The means of agreement and implementation for statements that do not describe a collaborative teaming process indicated that therapists agree with and implement some of these practices. This study found that 78% of Ohio school-based occupational therapist experience barriers to inclusive practice, and 75% experience barriers to team collaboration. Therapists reported time and scheduling difficulties as barriers to collaboration most frequently. Barriers to the use of an inclusive model of service consisted of 10 themes. with teacher/administration attitudes or policy. and scheduling difficulties occurring most frequently.
