Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Aviation: Including Construction and Operation It seems to be generally understood that the real value of a textbooks foreword is measured by its helpfulness to the reader in explaining how the volume may be studied to best advantage. Almost without exception, what is said here in front is supplementary and of a postscript nature, for, paradoxically, the foreword is written after the manuscript has been completed. Seeking to play the game according to the rules, I am forced to two conclusions: First, that I have little to say on the grouping of subjects and, secondly, that the typographical arrangement requires some explanation perhaps even justification. I will dismiss the first by noting merely that the analysis, in skeleton form, which precedes each chapter is intended as a guide, aiding dissection of the subject into easily remembered parts. These pages are in many ways comparable to the instructors preliminary talk or a blackboard outline before the class takes up co-related subjects in detail. To explain, or justify, if you choose, the typographical appearance of the pages, necessitates striking the personal note for a minute. The idea had its origin in an informal talk with a noncommissioned officer who was among the students of an aviation ground school class which I conducted at the outbreak of the war. By accident, his notebook came to my hands. It was amazingly comprehensive, covering by diagram and data an entire series of lectures. When I commended the student for its compilation he voiced typically youthful impatience with its limitations. I try to jot down each important thing you say, Sir, he complained, but I cant seem to get them verbatim. The diagrams I copy from the blackboard; that is easy. I am never satisfied with my notes, though, because its so hard to distinguish the vital thing to remember as you go along. Now if I could get everything word for word and devise some system of marking so I could record the relative emphasis of your voice well, Id call that a real notebook. That ended the episode. But in it was born the idea which forms the basis of this book. By typographical arrangement I have presented military aviation as it has been taught in the class room. The diagrams are those which have proven most valuable on the blackboard; photographs were chosen from among those projected on a screen by balopticon. Supporting text explanation of the illustrations has been arranged so the reader is never required to turn the page to apply its teachings each page is a brief blackboard talk or illustrated lecture, so to speak. For valuation of the importance of statements I have used relative sizes and boldness of type. Thus the volume appears as a series of condensed statements, presented in a form at variance with usual typographical arrangements, but, I hope, an exceedingly useful one. This book was released on 2014-07-10 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ""The text is not designed for those merely curious about military aviation, nor is it in any sense a treatise on aeronautical engineering. The entire book has been written with the idea of possible usefulness to student aviators who, rising to a military emergency, have to prepare in the shortest possible time."" This book is part of the World War One Centenary series; creating, collating and reprinting new and old works of poetry, fiction, autobiography and analysis. The series forms a commemorative tribute to mark the passing of one of the world's bloodiest wars, offering new perspectives on this tragic yet fascinating period of human history. Book Practical Airport Operations Safety and Emergency Management

Download or read book Practical Airport Operations Safety and Emergency Management written by Jeffrey Price and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2016-02-09 with total page 631 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Practical Airport Operations, Safety, and Emergency Management: Protocols for Today and the Future focuses on the airport itself, not the aircraft, manufacturers, designers, or even the pilots. The book explores the safety of what's been called 'the most expensive piece of pavement in any city'— the facility that operates, maintains, and ensures the safety of millions of air passengers every year. The book is organized into three helpful sections, each focusing on one of the sectors described in the title. Section One: Airport Safety, explores the airport environment, then delves into safety management systems. Section Two: Airport Operations, continues the conversation on safety management systems before outlining airside and landside operations in depth, while Section Three: Airport Emergency Management, is a careful, detailed exploration of the topic, ending with a chapter on the operational challenges airport operations managers can expect to face in the future. Written by trusted experts in the field, users will find this book to be a vital resource that provides airport operations managers and students with the information, protocols, and strategies they need to meet the unique challenges associated with running an airport. - Addresses the four areas of airport management: safety, operations, emergency management, and future challenges together in one book - Written by leading professionals in the field with extensive training, teaching, and practical experience in airport operations - Includes section on future challenges, including spaceport, unmanned aerial vehicles, and integrated incident command - Ancillary materials for readers to reinforce concepts and instructors teaching operations courses - Focuses on the topics of safety, operations, emergency management, and what personnel and students studying the topic can expect to face in the future

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flying Machines: construction and operation; a practical book which shows, in illustrations, working plans and text, how to build and navigate the modern airship by Octave Chanute I am asked to set forth the development of the "two-surface" type of flying machine which is now used with modifications by Wright Brothers, Farman, Delagrange, Herring and others. This type originated with Mr. F. H. Wenham, who patented it in England in 1866 (No. 1571), taking out provisional papers only. In the abridgment of British patent Aeronautical Specifications (1893) it is described as follows: "Two or more aeroplanes are arranged one above the other, and support a framework or car containing the motive power. The aeroplanes are made of silk or canvas stretched on a frame by wooden rods or steel ribs. When manual power is employed the body is placed horizontally, and oars or propellers are actuated by the arms or legs. "A start may be obtained by lowering the legs and running down hill or the machine may be started from a moving carriage. One or more screw propellers may be applied for propelling when steam power is employed." On June 27, 1866, Mr. Wenham read before the "Aeronautical Society of Great Britain," then recently organized, the ablest paper ever presented to that society, and thereby breathed into it a spirit which has continued to this day. In this paper he described his observations of birds, discussed the laws governing flight as to the surfaces and power required both with wings and screws, and he then gave an account of his own experiments with models and with aeroplanes of sufficient size to carry the weight of a man.
