A los 16 años obtuvo el grado de doctor en ambos derechos, civil y canónico. Para conservar la pureza de su alma escogió un director espiritual, visitó frecuentemente a Jesús Sacramentado y rezó con gran devoción a la Virgen. Diez años después de ejercer su profesión perdió por primera vez un juicio debido a intrigas políticas y abandonó los tribunales diciendo: "¡Ah, mundo, ya te he conocido. Adiós a los tribunales!" Se dedicó entonces a visitar enfermos y un día en el "Hospital de los incurables" oyó una voz interior que le dijo con claridad: "Alfonso, deja el mundo y entrégate a mí". Más tarde, al bajar la escalinata del hospital, se repitió el fenómeno todavía con voz más sensible: "Huye del mundo y entrégate a mí".Amor a Jesucristo" recoge toda la espiritualidad del Santo. Fueron muchas las enfermedades y sufrimientos que tuvo que soportar San Alfonso toda su vida que fue coronada con dieciséis días de dolorosa agonía. San Alfonso murió el 1 de agosto de 1787 a los 90 años.Alfonso Doctor: El Papa Gregorio XVI lo canonizó en 1839.
